Another bump.
This isn't just about LJ guys. All of the OC and Malibu kayak spots are on the block too.
SeaDog

:iagree:
Most of the kayak spots in the OC are on the block, as well as some of the best launches in Malibu, Ventura, and Santa Barbara.
My understanding is that even the worst case scenario maps don't meet their "guidelines" for what they would like to achieve.
Could someone post ext C?
In addition, saving La Jolla is important for OC kayakers as well, for the following reasons:
- It sure is nice to have the option.
- The popularity of kayak fishing in La Jolla has contributed to many of the innovations and developments in the sport that we've all benefited from.
- La Jolla has attracted many new addicts... I mean.. converts... I mean.. devotees to our sport resulting in a greater demand for kayak products and as a direct result a greater supply of kayak products, kayak forums, magazines, tournaments etc.
- It's ground zero in a fight that threatens our sport as a whole, and quite honestly, without the La Jolla guys, kayakers wouldn't really be fighting at all.
- People from San Diego are a strange brew, so let's keep them down there and out of DP.
It's time for the OC to join the fight!

Where would you kayak fish in the ocean if this was the chosen proposal? As we learned at the meeting, it doesn't even meet all the protection guidelines  .
People from San Diego are a strange brew, so let's keep them down there and out of DP.

Everyone, please click on that MAP, do you see all that RED That means, you CANNOT FISH THERE.. Don't think you are going to catch n release fish there. That means NO FISHING at all.... This is serious business... I am one of the laziest people on earth, after all I graduated from Chico State :p , but 1 meeting, and I understood, this is WAR. We need to show up be recognized.
If you dont know what to say, cede your time, I will coordinate that, if you want to speak, and don't know what to say, we will have some talking points to work together as a team. If you have some peace to say, say it! :you_rock:
Please show up, I would like to thank the 11 other guys who are signed up from this website, but cannot believe, that is all there is. If you don't show up, you will have less chances to be heard, and you WILL regret it.
chris
Chris isn't kidding. Things are extremely serious - we could lose every bit of La Jolla, the Dana headlands, BKR up in Malibu. This is a rare chance to do it outside of business hours too. Make it happen!
Paul and Chris aren't kidding...
In order to be taken serious, we need support by presence.
No Cal & Central Coast were caught off guard, the process was expedited, and now they suffer loss of fishing grounds. Look at their brochure...on one flap of the tri-fold, they outline the entire coast and islands for 3 miles out as no-take zones, yet the very next flap, it shows a guy surf fishing.
I don't know about you, I can't cast 3 miles...
If you think this whole process is about being fair, having solid statistical proof to back up their agenda, er, plan, then maybe you should attend one of the meetings. Better yet, attend one and ask the board a valid question or concern, and see what response (if any) they give you.
It is, without a doubt, unreal how they are going about it. They don't anticipate a battle from us, and my impression is that we are insignificant in their eyes.
Smoke and mirrors...they would prefer us to be mushrooms, keep us in the dark and feed us bull$hit...
Be counted and be heard...
Know that, if they get what they want, there is a 'process' in place to review any closure...every 5 years...

Yes, you will be supporting your RSG reps, and being able to witness the process first hand. There also will likely be public comment on the 21st, but the agenda has not been published as far as I know. Please attend, we need an army of kayak fishermen there, to be honest 100 kayakers each meeting minimum.
If people are seeing 17 people who have stepped up, and think that it is enough, and they will represent you, so you don't have to go, then I am here to tell you we need you to show up!

Fellas, wake up and do some reading...Kayakers from SD, OC, IE, wherever...
If you think we are all about saving LJ, wake up my OC brothers...
If your area is closed, where ya gonna go? San O?
O'side? Barren waste land, minimal kelp.
I've got my options, albeit not launch friendly, but it will do.
They want to take away the whole So Cal bight, our presence and voices need to be heard...
We are being challenged because they, ya they, think we will just roll with the punches, and make plans accordingly.
'Their' plans are set in motion, we need to disrupt their plans.
We as a collective whole, need to be heard and have our presence felt.
I'm a renegade, I do not care what they deem is in my best interest...I will continue to not buy fish.
And your thoughts are?

Guys n gals, read this, to help you get your thoughts, and comments together. Remember if you do not feel like speaking showing up to support your RSG in numbers is very crucial, and you can cede your time to others.
Suggestions for Effective Public Comment:
Public participation is one of the cornerstones of the California Marine
Life Protection Act (MLPA) Initiative and is greatly valued. One method for
participating in the process is by making comments at public meetings. A
short list of recommendations has been prepared to help maximize the
effectiveness of public comments:
1. Generally comments must be made within a one to three minute time
period. The length of time allocated to each speaker is at the discretion of
the meeting convener and depends on several factors, including the number of individuals wishing to speak on a particular topic.
2. Speakers should identify themselves by name, indicate their main
interest or connection to the ocean (if desired), and succinctly summarize
their main message with as much specificity as possible. It is most
effective to keep your verbal message to no more than three main points and then provide details about those points, or additional information, in a written document.
3. Comments should focus on topics under the purview of the Marine
Life Protection Act (MLPA) and that are under consideration by the MLPA group you are addressing:
a. Policy comments and overarching planning issues for the Blue Ribbon Task Force (BRTF).
b. Science comments for the Science Advisory Team (SAT).
c. Comments on marine protected area (MPA) design and placement for the Regional Stakeholder Group (RSG).
4. When preparing comments, it is very helpful to consider the key
points you wish to have the group members bear in mind as they do their work or make decisions.
5. Multiple speakers with a shared message or from the same organization are encouraged and will be requested to combine their speaking points.
6. Questions or comments can be submitted in writing via email (
MLPAComments@resources.ca.gov) or standard mail (MLPA Initiative, c/o
California Natural Resources Agency, 1416 Ninth Street, Suite 1311,
Sacramento, CA 95814) are distributed to the MLPA Initiative groups and
posted on the MLPA website.
7. There will be an opportunity for public comment at each public meeting; for two-day meetings, comment may only be taken on one of the two days. Meeting agendas will denote when public comment is expected to occur, though please note that these times are only an approximation. Work sessions are not public meetings and do not have a public comment period.
8. Speakers are welcome to distribute written material to the groups. If materials are submitted at least three business days in advance of a meeting, they will be copied by MLPA staff and provided to the group
members; if materials are received less than three business days in advance
of a meeting, you must provide a sufficient number of copies for distribution, otherwise staff will copy and distribute the information after the meeting. Other media presentations, such as slides and videos, are only permitted by prior arrangement and may be limited depending on time availability. An alternate space in the venue may be provided for displaying the speaker's additional media information or written materials, as needed.

And this was mentioned on BD...
Everyone wear Black. Black tshirt, black dress shirt, black jacket... Just make sure it is black. All fisherman, whether Kayak, H&L, and spearfisherman wear black. That way they can see how many of us there (hopefuly) are.
Writing letters, and donating money is the easy way out. Do things on their time, not your own to show how much you care. Show up.

What time is the San Diego group leaving for the meeting on the 19th ??
Depends on how much of the meeting you can, or want to attend. I would suggest leaving before 3PM, for traffic reasons. Public comment tomorrow is at 7PM, but the meeting starts at 8:00AM.
We are game on...thanks Chris for staying on top of this...:you_rock:
Don't know what Clay will say this time, but it comes from within. Maybe he will touch on the fact that is a safe launch, even for kids.
I am humbled (and outshined...:sifone:) just for the main fact that a 9 yr old understands the importance of being heard. And this time, he doesn't get to miss school yet still wants to go...safe to say he understands what is at stake...

I was living in NorCal when the MLPA's came through and they pretty much arbitratily closed sections of the coast. Thanks to the tireless efforts of an few kayak fishermen and organizations some spots were saved. But it took a hell of a lot of effort. I'd hate to see good spots closed down there as well so if you can, get down to the hearings and be heard. If you can't make it support someone who is going to talk or an organization that will.
In Washington the MLPA's are coming as well and we're doing the best we can to be prepared to preserve what we've got.

Are we going to let this happen to us?
Sometimes you pick and choose your battles...
Do not sit on the fence on this one, and hope that others will bail us all out....
Thanks for that Zee...:you_rock:

The battle lines have been drawn and by standing by and not taking action you are doing exactly what the pro-MLPA people are hoping for!!!!
SO STOP BEING A WANKER AND STAND UP AND BE COUNTED!!!! GO TO THE MEETINGS!!!

One more thing, try to get there as soon as possible. They may stop taking public comment cards at 6pm, meaning if you show up at 7pm you won't be able to speak. Also, if you don't respond when they call your name to speak, you miss out.
We should get there in plenty of time, so if you are worried, pm me and I'll give you my phone # and can fill out a card for you.
edit->
It would be easier if you just pm'd me your info

I am pretty sure that is all they wanted last time.
I'll stop checking my pms at about 12:30 today.
Tman and I are heading up around 230 and picking up Clay from school, so we should be up there fairly early. If you can't find the Kayak section please feel free to text or call me at 619.760.3792

Howdy fellow kayakers.
We have 26 spearos signed up to go to the meeting to speak out against closures.
http://spearboard.com/showthread.php?t=84279
I am hoping to have more kayak fishermen there so as to have another consumptive group outdo spearos (thus shaming even more spearos into showing up at future meetings).
We won't be caught off guard like what happened in Norcal.
By the way...a hearty thanks to everyone. It's going to be nice to be in a meeting room with a lot of friendlies... Black shirt everyone.
You guys rock!

I hope I'm not stealing your thunder but you kayakers rock tonight. You did outstanding. Beyond highlighting the needs of kayak fishermen in general, you all did great with the focus on La Jolla, it's unique launching spot for kayaks, and the importance of keeping this area open for kayak fishing. All of this came through loud and clear.:luxhello:
From a San Diegan and a spearo--thank you.:you_rock:
P.S. You humbled us. I think there were more of you guys tonight--for the first time and I hope that will continue.
Just got back, about 30 of us showed up, way to go guys...
We need to stress LJ, and I think we did a good job at it and need to keep applying the pressure...
On a couple occasions, whole groups went up and took turns speaking pro MLPA, all the while saying things like, "We love fishing, and love fishermen, but we want to see implementation so our grandkids will one day be able to fish." This came from a whole clan from Malibu.
Another Foundation, advocating closures, spoke also with at least 7-8 of them, but what was funny, was each time a certain pro MLPA group would speak, get applause from a select few, they would all leave, not hearing the other sides' view point and what is at stake...
This is what we are up against. They seem to not want to hear our views, but sure try to do a good job of trying to sound empathetic to our plight by saying they like to fish, but are quite quick to recommend the closures...guess they thought their strategy would fool somebody when it was clear that their true motives were transparent.
To all that went, spoke, and were heard, kayakers, spearos, fishermen and women, :you_rock:. Now is the time to increase our numbers...more voices, more viewpoints, let them know what is truly at stake.
As Tyler stated, "If you aren't part of the solution, you are part of the problem."
was great hearing from all the kayak fisherman here. Ill be attending the thursday may 21st as well!

We did not make it to the end, but lasted until 11:30. Thanks to all of you guys that came out tonight. I feel like we were well represented and did a good job of getting our point across, repeatedly.
if we keep speaking up, we may just end up with something liveable like propsal A or B. If we sit on our hands we are sure to regret it later. We are making progress.
It's not over by a long shot, so who's headed up on Thursday?

Just got home a few minutes ago. Poor Paul and the other RSG stake holders are still probably listening to public comment. I have to work at 6:30am like usual so we left about 11:30pm.
We did good, but it isn't over. It was really disturbing that the meeting was not being videotaped like previous ones. They finally get a huge turnout for Public Comment, then don't tape it for the record  . Next time we need even more. We can get over 100 guys if we really try. Make it so many we can't be ignored.
Thanks Joe (ZenSpearo) . Nice meeting you. Your site has all the pertinent info.
For those that want to more about the MLPA, like me, go to youtube.com and search for MLPA 101. There are some informative videos from the classroom sessions earlier this week. You can watch them on your own time if you couldn't make it.

I think we had a good turnout, but need to keep up the pressure. If you fish the OC and did not make it last night, you'd be crazy not to go to the meeting on Thursday. Their is a large contingent of Laguna Beach ecos, not just content to have virtually their own private beaches, but want the kayaks and boats off the waters so their view is unspoiled. They're pressuring for closures from Dana Point to Newport. Time for everyone to step up. The process is biased against us, so we need to represent more than them.

Nice seeing some of you guys down/up there...I got there a little too late to submit a card to speak but I got a good feel for what to speak about during my minute of time for the 21st, it was a good recon.
Like Kurt said, I can't believe there weren't more guys from the OC there. Congrats to GreenJeans for speaking up. You guys are going to get screwed if you don't speak up for your spot. Those enviros got Dana Headlands, Laguna, and etc...on their radar. The sportboat captains were there, but they can motor pass any near coast closure....yakkers are going to be SOL.

Those Grey Haired Old Ladies who have more money than God are turning up the Heat. They made it clear that it is their beach, and not some stinking kayakers, or lousy fisherman's playground to use at they please.
Even the Old Ladies are Fighting Dirty,
Claiming that SHE swims in Her Ocean Every Day....cough.cough.bullshit.cough.
testafying that they get Upset when they see fish that have been wounded by bad spearfisherman, and are worried about the protection of their precious SHEEPSCRAB
-How they Love to Fish, but want Closures. -More BS-
--Yes, you read that correctly, I said SHEEPSCRAB.

It was an amazing experience listening to all of the fishermen speak, the emotions and the reality of the effects these potential closures will have on businesses can't be denied at least from where I was sitting. Everyone needs to continue to speak up. I left just before midnight and our voices were continuing to be echoed
San diego was pretty well represented and voiced to keep La Jolla open. As for people living in Laguna Beach who want to continue to fish, you need to get to the meetings. Those citizins want that whole part of the coast closed.
Any updates why they chose not to record this meeting? Seems odd if they have been recording the rest!

Hey guys, you all did an awesome job last night. For the first time H&L groups outnumbered the spearfishermen at one of these meetings :you_rock:. I will be there Thursday morning to help the group from baytubers get their speaking cards turned in and to also give them info they need as to the whole process. I will not be speaking Thursday since they have already heard me enough and I made my point to the RSG reps last night but will cede my time to anyone needing it. Keep up the fight guys we outnumbered the non concumptive factions by at least 7 to 1 :luxhello:. The "old lady" that got up and spoke about protecting 3 arch bay has made it very clear in past meetings by clearely stating that "I do not want spearfishermen or fishermen on my beach" something she forgets though is that no one owns the beach and though she may own a piece of land upon which her house sits inside it's own private gated community the beach is public lands to which no one can claim ownership. The next stage in this round will be critical also in which the agreed upon maps will be "shopped around" at public workshops so Joe public can get a look at how these closures will affect them including residents whose taxes will go up to generate revenews for the upkeep of the proposed MPA's. There will be 2 (maybe 3 after overhearing talks yesterday) workshops for each region 2 in the LA/LB area 2 in the Laguna/Dana area and 2 in the SD/LJ area. We need numbers at these meeting most importantly since these will be where the non concumptives try to sway the general public to their direction by accepting the large closure areas we need to be there to speak up (politely and in a non aggressive way) and counter their arguments. Thanks again for showing up guys.
I was at the meeting last night from Orange Co but was not able to stay to the end. It was great to see large group of kayak supporters. We will be the most effected by any closures.
