What Gaff and Why?

what gaff do most of you guys use and why? I'm looking for one for my yak and i'm an FNG to this. i'm thinking a nice floating calcutta gaff would work out well. any thoughts?

i think alot of us hav a ghetto homemade gaff cuz we're cheap...but I would like to get 1 of those X-tools floating gaffs if I ever find one decently priced..

I don't like the X-ttols one because it won't fit in a rod holder. I have a floating bamboo one from one of the kayakfishing web sites that has worked well.

thanks ryan, i appreciate the info. i took a look at those but they seem a little pricey to me. i know a good gaff isn't something to skimp on, but there are others out there, in my opinion, that look just as good for cheapter; and that float. i've got my eye on this one:

Calcutta Gaff...best $20 I ever spent. They are perfect for the yak.

I have two, one is about 2' the other is 3.5'.

The guy usually has an assortment of lengths, diameters and hook sizes at the Day at the Docks down at Fisherman's Landing in mid April.

Anything in 2-4' is perfect, just get the bigger hook size for those big yellows and sea bass.

#3 hook size or bigger. Floating and most important of all - stainless. Even though mine are galvinized, I'm just waiting for the Fred Ho to upgrade.

Stainless is always good. The taper of the hooks point needs to be long so it will go into the fish easier. Some stainless at least the ones I've seen have a short point. That means you need to hit with more force. Just something to think about.

Whatever gaff you get, make sure you have a tennis ball (or something similar) to put over the pointy, sharp part.
