Finally popped my cherry this morning. Decided so skip a couple of hours of work. Not a big guy at all, but all I can do is improve on it! Thanks to all for teaching me to fish via the internet!
This pic makes him looks big:D

Congratulations Echo.

I also got my first YT today and I would like to second the thanks to everyone for the good council. Proof that the time on the water rule is valid. I don't have any talent or all the right gadgets, but I have put in some serious hours out there.

While I was out there one of the cattle boats got into some fish, Bonita and a few yellows, and it seemed like all hell broke loose. The people on the boat yelling over crossed lines and gaffs, the captain telling off some other PBers that were running over the chum line, the birds, seals, sea lions, eight more power boats and several kayaks all converging on the scene.....

The kayak is where its at for me.

Also, thanks to the dudes who gave me a sabiki rig on the beach when my last one turned out to be FUBAR. Hopefully I can return the favor soon.

Hey TCS, no need to repay for the sabiki, we cashed out on our karma points today! :reel:

Damn today was an epic bite. We stayed out away from the crowd and still found fish! we saw all the commotion and boats and watched it all go down over bent rods!

I caught my first YT of yak today:luxhello: also and it was my 2nd trip to LJ. One with spanish mac and the other one with lime-green tedy 45:jig:. The sizes weren't big ones but it surely was fun. We were catching straight out from the tower about 70 feet of water. If you have time, you should definately go out NOW! Go Yakers!

It wasnt Josh fishing for Nessy, it was Sammons, and he did hook up. Sammons got bit on a lightweight spinning rig while drop shotting a whole haggis. It was an epic battle that lasted over 18 hours. While Sammons had a support boat standing by, he never called for help. An exhausted Sammons finally leadered and released Nessy after a few photos to the chagrin of local authorities. Look for it on the next "Game On" video!

Sorry to get off topic.

As we all know there are no lifeguards off the point and the wind has been pretty stiff in the afternoons. Fish at your own risk and bring all the safety gear.

I saw a few giant Chupacabra, one packin' a 9mm and threatining guys trying to launch. Not to mention I took a photo of a sea lion with a surface iron hanging out of his mouth. We've all seen a Sea Lion with a surface iron in it's mouth, no big deal. But, this Sea Lion had also been attacked by a Great White Shark. Fresh wounds on it's back wrapping around it's stomach. As the PHD in the movie Jaws said "this was no boating accident" :).

I'll admit, I felt sorry for this big mature furbag. It is kinda funny when you think about it, though. Not only are you too dumb to keep from slamming a blue and white Tady 45 with a large shiny treble hook, but you look like a surface iron to the wrong kind too. :jig:

Oh Yeah, No Yellowtail in La Jolla!

Hmmm
something tells me
there must be
Yellowtails
in La Jolla
I maybe wrong...
but I just got this feeling

Besides,
A friend of mine who owns a little skiff
said he is heading down to LJ tommorrow...
because he heard somewhere that the kayakers are killing it

Somehow I managed to weave my offering through all the giant Bonita and connect to the right kind...three times :).

On a side note, I would strongly suggest an iron with a single hook right now. The fact of the matter is the 7-10 lb Bonita outnumber the Yellowtail 10 to 1. Ten pound Bonita on the surface-iron is crazy fun, though.

I saw this bitten Dog on Sunday, he has a nice size hole on his back I was going to snap a pic, but decided not to bother.
He wasn't wearing the iron on Sunday

He looked lively yesterday, still chasing fish.

i think that telling stories of hooked and/or injured birds and mammals is not probably not a good idea considering the microscope we are under. sorry to be a party pooper. :arne1:

congrats to you guys getting your first YTs!

As far as White Sharks in the Pacific Ocean, much like Yellowtail, there's more than one. I feel like I'm on the crime show "48 Hours", where they pile up the leads before the case turns cold. The point I'm getting at, the full grown Knothead I saw with a brand new surface-iron in his lip, complete with new wounds from a White Shark was on Sunday too. I was just about to paddle out for a surf and this dog was trying to beach somewhere, anywhere, clearly in shock! He made a couple weak attempts to hop up the rocks where I was paddling out, but decided to continue to the sandy beach a little further south. Every guy surfing flew out of the lineup at the sight of the injured dog, I had it all to myself for a while.

So, this means there's two Sea Lions who managed to escape the jaws of death in La Jolla, recently. I guess the bad news is this large White Shark is still hungry .

And thanks for the casting lesson? Is this the same Billy V in quotes below from a few days ago?

"I use a Shimano Baitrunner 4500 B Spinning Reel on a 7 ft. rod to throw surface iron. It will never birds nest, and casts almost as far anything else.
-Its just plain easy."

"The real advantage comes when a boil pops up and you only get 1 shot to fire it off. Point and shoot accurate, and No Birds Nest."

The only difference between a "casts almost as far as anything else" (7' rod) and a proper jig-stick (9'+): One of them has a fish attached to the iron before it makes it back to the boat :p.
