I plan to give Cardiff Reef a try Friday AM. Anyone been out there recently? If so, please post a report.

Anyone one to join me?

I went out early on 8/12 and caught a bunch of bass. If you are fishing for bass, bring plenty of plastics there are lots of small 'cudas around the outside kelp edges. I got tired of them biting the tails off my swim baits and switched to a crocodile and had a great time catching them on light tackle- even a few bonito. Uni butter (goop) on the plastics seemed to make a big difference--be nice to my fish Cardiff is my backyard thanks.

i was out thursday 8-13. launched a little on the later side. some south wind on it early but died for a while for some glassy conditions- then switched on shore.

nothing going on really. didn't make bait in the kelp so we paddled to the pipe. nada.

saw some birds working hard to south- made the paddle but only caught a decently sized sand shark. a surprisingly gutless fight. c&r. we did observe a school of bat rays cruising at ~15' in 85' of water.

drifted for some hali's but came up empty there too.

i'd be interested to hear your report.

Similar results for me today. The launch was easy but building surf made the landing a little tougher. It was really calm till about noon. All the fish except for one must have been on vacation. Even the little baracuda which are almost always there were no-shows.

The fish I did catch was something new to me. It had the markings of a barred sand bass but was long and thin like a corvina. It was about two pounds and did not fight at all. Anyone know what this thing might have been?

I nearly always release the fish I catch. I only keep what I plan to eat. This year I have been gone hungry quite often.

What is the size limit on a WSB? Are the small ones legal? If so, I bet they are really tasty.

Come on now, Bob. 28". The little ones are very fragile, too, so try not to target them.

I had never seen a small WSB before Friday. I certainly do not know how to target them but trust me, anything smaller than 28" will live to bite another day.

At least now I can say I have caught a WSB, sort of.

Hey-

I live in Leuacadia and usually hit La Jolla but have always wondered about the fishing this time of year off Swamis and Grandview..... I saw about 10 boats out there on Saturday and it seemed like there was some kind of bite out there.

Does anyone else have much success for yellows around Encinitas??

Thanks for any feedback....

For the record Dadandson, I realeased this fish as I almost always do. I have not yet kept a fish in 2009.

Went out to the kelp beds on saturday and fished with a few life guard buddy overall the day was slow, but a few sandies were caught and calico. The highlight of the day was the 15 lb halibut i caught on a white iron with a glow in the dark underside. One of the guys caught a 50lb bat ray and a huge shovelnose. It isnt a bad place to fish.
