Went out Sunday in hopes of a repete of last week. Launched to a really high tide at around 7:00 am, the water was lapping the street. No wave but a little windy and choppy. A long story short, wasn't much going on out there. In the afternoon in about 140ft of water I got a hook up on the yo yo iron. Thought it may of been the right kind but it turned out to be a big, maybe a 8lb bonita. Hard fighting fish but on 40lb line wasn't much of a challenge. On my way in at dust I hook another small bonita at the kelp line. Tried for some rockfish but wasn,t nothen happening there not even a nibble.

Still a beautiful day on the water.

Congrats on the big Bonita. Sounds like enough to fill several bait cages. :D

Take a look at Google Earth/ Maps. This will give you the best idea of where the kelp starts.

If you live in San Diego, drive down to La Jolla cove, or anywhere along the coastline road in La Jolla, and you can see the kelp from the shore. Not from the launch, you need to be a bit south of that, above the water, to see it well.
That will answer your questions.

Those big Bonito's fight like crazy. Pretty tasty too.
They can be really fun to catch on a lighter rod.
And like the man said, they fill a couple of bait cages nicely.
