I have a friend selling some rods. I wanted a 20 pound rod for the kayak. I do like them in 7 footers. Given a choice for flylining, which rod would you chose?
The Calstar 700 L 15-20 or the 700 ML in 20-40?
Thanks for you advice.

Depends if you want pulling power or forgiveness. I like lighter for braid/flouro set ups as hooks pull if there is nothing in the set up to absorb the shock. If Halibut, bass and WSB are the species sought most, go with the lighter rod, YT get the beefy one.

I'd go with the 700L for flylining w/20#. The 700L is rated 15-30 and is a good 20#, light 25# rod. The ML is a good 25#, light 30# rod.

I've got a grftr 700xl blank that I'm wrapping for myself and love the feel of it. If you'd like something with a very light tip that still has a lot of back bone once you bend it far enough, you might give it a look. It would not be something to horse the fish in with, but if you fish it in open water where there's nothing to avoid, it can be a lot of fun.
Of the two rods you have listed I'd go with the 700L.

Years ago I wrapped a 700L for my 20lb bait stick. It was way too stiff and heavy for 20. I could barely pull hard enough with 20lb to even get a decent bend in the rod. I hated that rod and almost sold it until I fished 25lb on it. What a difference. OK so now it's my 25 and 30lb bait rod. You might want to invest in a 700XL if you want some thing for 20. Leave the 700L for 25-30. Since they're your buddy's rods you might want to try putting the 20lb reel you plan on using on the rod and giving it a good pull. You'll be able to tell if the rod feels too stiff. Mike

I fish 25 or 30 on my 700ML, I would definitely go to the L for 20#.
