put in another 10 hour day laying tar on a shopping center roof. thought I'd try night fishing again since it paid off the night before. launched at low tide just before sunset. went straight to the honey hole. 2nd drop. 52 lb fish of a lifetime.

The "Maestro" (Josh) says that the series of storms washed all the sand out to the canyon ledge which has triggered the squid to come up & spawn. To verify his theory I cut open a few of the bigger greenbacks. chock full o jolly ranchers. he's right.

this place is about to go off. the showers predicted for this saturday are going to be light and probably won't muddy the water and the surf isn't going to be big.

Easy Yany,
Wait on the water until sun rise, take the picture with the sun in your face, rush home, using photo shop or any other image compositing software, and use a sunset shot of the cove as your background. Then hack into the BWE server and change the time you logged in.;)

Either way, nice fish no matter when you caught it.

So the frenzy is about ready to start. It should be interesting trying to get dozens of kayaks launched without being able to drive on the sand. Anyone know when the City expects to repair the launch?

He also said this little tid bit....

"If there was a Batman' esque sign we could flash during the night, something only the kayak community we love could see...that would be a different story. I'd be all for it, waving the flag. And it's not about being selfish either, it's about protecting the resource.

If you stumble upon something of mass proportions, or even looks like it could turn into something of mass proportions...please use discretion when considering a "timely report". That said, I could care less if you P.M. every person you know. Feel free to call every fishing buddy you have and I'm sure they'll be happy to return the favor some day. We all know these times I speak of, rare opportunities at that, special occasions indeed! Special occasions we all love to share with "friends". These special occasions don't need to be accompanied by a fleet of boats. It's avoidable with some discretion and just a sprinkle of common sense. Trust me, it's been done before. Not by accident, either."

tik tok tik tok....soon the Pbers will flock.

True dat...

If I was a professional guide I would certainly ask my clients to use the better part of discretion as to sounding a Fire Alarm in regards to a wide open bite, or squid bite, the latter of which is not true at the moment.

I guess they pay for that information and can use it anyway they want, but it splashes back to the provider, "The Guide" and in this case I would think Josh would not approve of broadcasting a bite message as per his wise words written in the previous post.

The Fish of a Liftime was caught early last week during the day and I saw no evidence of squid on Friday pm or last Sat am. The launch is a mess and will likely be that way for quite sometime. The City's boozers are working the all the storm bull around our city streets and LJBT Club keeps dumping kelp in front of our ramp unabated. Be careful with the sharp drop-offs at the street and curb edges where stagnant water is now staying put during all tides. I still have confidence we will see a real squid spawn but I would not canceal any Superbowl Party plans you may have this weekend.

My son hooked a Thresher pup on Sat am that fortunately bit thru the line just as he was already talking about bringing the jaws to show-off at school. I yo-yoed my arms off both days with no white gold grabbing my jigs. :jig:

Killing two Fish of a Lifetime in one day seems a bit excessive. I am sure there is a good story behind Arne's fatal harvest but folks should be aware that Josh can provide release as well as catching lessons for those that are interested.

No large fish were caught last Friday as Josh's 12 hours on the water can atest to. Conditions were certainly not glassy last Sat or any day this week and I believe Mr. Miller looks a bit younger in his ?summer sun? Trifecta photo with different waders on as well.

Ten yaks and one PB out this am with some bird action as I looked out into the Canyon at 9am today. Although I am not a big f-ball fan I would say watch the game and wait for another report to varify the real situation. I may hit it again tomarrow pm so feel free to pm me if you want a timely report. Now, with the BD post the PBers will be out in force this weekend. Maybe, Mr. Miller holds gasoline futures in his portfolio?

So maybe we need a secret code that only those vetted by BWE royalty can decipher. If you catch your fish near the LJ canyon, you could post that you were off the glider port. If you say La Jolla, you might really mean Bird Rock and of course, Bird Rock could be north of the pier.

When fish are biting on iron the code word could be Schwarzenegger or some other iron pumper. Bait could something tasty like Burrito or your favorite porn star.

When the squid actually show up we could spread the word covertly by mentioning that "unemployment benefits are being extended". Those in the know... would know.

Of course none of this will work unless we first come up with a secret handshake. For further security maybe we could all get a tiny tattoo in an inconspicuous place that could be used to confirm that someone you just met is worthy of befriending.

This is very serious stuff. We have to do something something now to stop the unauthorized dissemination of our secrets. If we fail to do this, we could soon be overrun by Chinese hackers intent on catching every fish in the area and shipping them back home so Communist party officials can pose for photos with trophy Yellowtail or WSB.

I was at Torrey Pines with pumping iron with Lou Ferrigno when Pamela Anderson comes up and says ‘Hey boys, you want a piece of my tasty taco? I could extend your benefits if you want’ All of a sudden Lou’s pole gets bent and he’s trying to straighten it out but can’t. I don’t want to be left out so I say to Pam ‘Hey wanna see my tatoo? Its in a super secret spot’ Of course she would have wanted to see Lou’s tatoo, but mine - no way. So Lou and I went home and had a few beers. Going with Arnold tomorrow.

Being that I was the one to do the certified weight on Ricks fish I 100% agree with this statement. This fish easily lost enough weight to beat out Arnes fish. It was fairly dry when it got to OEX plus that little bit of weight the bleeding takes would have put it over im sure.

Damn I didn't want to do this ... but just so the "record's" straight:

All the fish was eaten. Two fish in one day, three fish in three days, five fish on a three day trip, who friggin cares. It wasn't gill netted, store bought fish ... it was perfectly legal ... it surely wasn't immoral ... and it wasn't, imfo, excessive. 'Nuff said.

The "record" is pretty meaningless - I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. It's gonna be broken. But if you're gonna consider "what ifs" ... then get 'em all in  Mine was bled otw. Don't know how long it was b/t catch and scale but I'm guessing at least a few hours. I fished a while longer - at least long enough to fight another yt where I "practiced my release" - got a few pics in, distributed some bait, paddled in, took some more pics and tape shots, stopped for coffee, yadayadayada, and then drove up to Oceanside for the weight. It, too, was dry and stiff ...

I'm out,
Arne

Yes Jim I am not a Senior Member like yourself and Arne. I do respect the longevity and experience of this forum. Envy may have been my primary motivation for the use of the word excessive but I did not call Arne a lair as I suggested Mr. Miller may be. I apprecaite Arne sharing that he did practice some restrant with a realease on his extraordinary day. My question is how the heck do you land and release another fish with two 50 lbers in your yak? That is truely a feat of a lifetime.

I apprecaite the inshights shared on this forum and I was mainly motivated by a desire to get the most accurate information to all. Mr. Miller is obvious a talented fisherman and I appreciate his sharing of tecniques as well. However, I also agree that one pic post a week may be sufficent to get the point across to those in the know.

Good point but the bottom line is that we should never take more than we can use. If someone can consume 100 lbs of fresh fish in a week or two than they should definitely keep that much fish if they can catch it.

On the other hand, if you harvest more than you can use and a bunch of it ends up in the freezer only to get tossed out when you catch your next big fish, that is wasteful. It makes no sense to me to kill a fish and then send it to the land fill.

To me, there are two great things about fishing... catching and eating. The catching part ends when you get the fish to the yak. If you need the meat, stick the gaff. If not, take a photo and release the fish.

It does not matter if you are one guy on a kayak or part of a large group on a PB, the rules should be the same. Take what you need... use what you take. It's as simple as that.

The problem is determinig how much someone else needs. i just ate some tuna last night from this past summer. Vacume sealed and in the freezer for quite some time now. I remember putting the fish in the freezer in the summer thinking I was taking too much. Now I'm thinking summer needs to get here so I can re-stock. Tuna that is. I have other stuff in the freezer.

I just have a hard time giving someone grief about their take when I don't know their situation. They were legal fish.

All this back a forth about harvesting shows how touchy a subject this is and I for one will not bring it up again as I do believe this forum is a great place to share experiences and information not express opinions. My main intent was to challenge Mr. Miller to come back with a reply to fess up or clarify his claims of the Trifecta.

Nobody should judge how much fish one can consume in a certain amount of time. Fish doesn't last long in my freezer. I would have no problem keeping two 52bl Y.T. caught in the same day and only post one. that would be enough fish for 6 months. If you use a food saver the fish wiil stay almost fresh for a year.

I would love to practice catch and release. My promlem is the same as 95% of kayak fishing guys out there. I spend HUNDREDS of hours on the water and maybe catch one or two Y.T. a year if im lucky. last year I caught two 30lb Y.T. on the squid run which lasted for about 3 days.

If i would of caught 5 Y.T. during the squid run I would of kept them all - because that would have been itttt- for the whole year. The squid run only comes once a year and last for maybe three day. If your lucky enough to fish in that small window, good for you! and if your like me, (no fish catching fool) I hope you catch your limit!! ok, maybe 5 would suffice.

Thanks for the insite and concern for people taking more fish than you wish,Bob, I've never released a yellowtail in my life! I only stop fishing for them when I get limits or my arms fall off! I may practice catch and release on yellows someday but not "today".

Someone suggested that the Kayak Fishing Report section is probably not the best place to hold a discussion about the merits of Catch and Release practices. He was right. Lets move this discussion to the General Kayak Fishing section.

Jim, you sure have riled them up over at BD.

Well it was fun for a while....

You know it's weird for me: since I both fish skiffs and kayak I feel like I can see both sides. I've posted at BD since it first started up and used to have a reputation there but since I started yakking I don't post much because there is so much info I can't post there.

Seems I pissed off some of the new guys who do not know me, and I got a lot of the standard BS.

I just said what a lot of people are thinking, as to what went down afterwards, well I guess that was pretty predictable.

I got several PM's from the mods over the thread, some saying it was good to see me posting and others saying if I didn't watch it they were going to boot my ass. Par for the course when you start saying things that are not the status quo.

Hopefully it will make some guys think about posting your info from here to there, but who knows.

As to the whole wasted fish BS.... One word... Freezer!!!

I got maybe thirty pounds in mine but that is not going to keep me fro trying for more. It all get's eaten and it's far too good to let go bad.

I apologize to retarded people.

Jim Day, please do not speak for La Jolla kayakers on BD. You do not represent us.

Well you are certainly entitled to your opinion.

It was not my intention to represent kayaking or BWE there at all. I certainly do not claim to a representative for anyone. I don't speak for anyone but myself..... ever!

I may of said the original post made a number of people upset, but that does not mean I speak for those people.

As to BD my posts there were not an attack against BD.

I love Bloody decks it's a great site, it's one of the few places I feel free to say what I really think. Maybe I pushed that freedom a little far, and it probably is not the first time either.

That said: I've been posting there for seven years, and brother there is nothing else like it on the web.

Just because I don't post as much as I used to, or just because I don't like the original post that started that thread doesn't mean I'm anti BD. That's ridiculous. I love BD can't imagine tuna fishing without it. Best Offshore info in So. Cal hands down!!

Believe it or not I had the best of intentions over there. When guys post your info there it causes the PB fleet to converge on La Jolla. They do not realise it's an issue, I do. I was just trying to bridge the gap and make them aware of it.

You know the thing about the web is people say things in the heat of the moment that maybe they should not say. After all there are no checks and balances, it's not like your facing the person your talking to.

Maybe I said some things i should not of said over there.

Maybe some others said them as well, but eventually the dust will settle and I'll still be fishing. All this web stuff is cyber dust but the fishing remains and ultimately that is all I really care about.

Just my take though, and like I said your are certainly entitled to your opinion.

Go ahead and represent. You are credible, have a point and it provides great entertainent. I didn't paddle out this morning, but I heard that one of the power boats caught a ray, everyone else came up empty. So a lot of good it did them after all.

Great job on getting the big yellowtail onboard - nice photo too.

Thought I would get one last kayak 50# club photo up on this thread,
since the rest are here. This was caught 30 days before Arne's in fall 2005.
You can't convince me that mine wasn't luck - I wasn't even fishing for
yellowtail ..... :o

You know what?

This sheeeeet is phoookin' stupid. Over and over again.

Arne, nice catch I would've done the same. How many PBers release YT?

I can remember the day when on my boat, I would leave an area after catching dinks, looking for the bigger models. Because I didn't want to limit out.

Phookin bash people because they catch fish...must be too slow this time of year.
And if you go on BD and brag about your exploits, guess what, you are just as guilty..wake the phook up. And you know who you are.

Yeah Jim, but it sure sounds like you are, for people jumping in between the boards and reading it.

BWE has always been tight with BD. Lots of people that built this board and are still here did their Internet fishing growing up on BD. We're friends, we fish together.

I'll pull one out of Jason's pocket :) - don't bring my boards down with negative BS. I'm much nicer than Jason, so I'll ask you kindly to please stop and give us all a break.

Preaching to people on Internet fishing forums by posting at the same place whether it's cool to post or not, where or how....

Is silly.

Funny part of this Thread is that many of you change when you sit behind the computer. I've met just about every single person on this thread and you are all nice guys with different views.

What caused this thread to go south? Was it the crappy weather or the fact that people kept fish within the DFG guidlines? Sounds pretty retarded to me! Boredom can make you do stupid things.

I don't get to fish that much these days so when I catch a fish, I'm sticking it, filleting it, vacume sealing it, and freezing it.

1946

put in another 10 hour day laying tar on a shopping center roof. thought I'd try night fishing again since it paid off the night before. launched at low tide just before sunset. went straight to the honey hole. 2nd drop. 52 lb fish of a lifetime.

The "Maestro" (Josh) says that the series of storms washed all the sand out to the canyon ledge which has triggered the squid to come up & spawn. To verify his theory I cut open a few of the bigger greenbacks. chock full o jolly ranchers. he's right.

this place is about to go off. the showers predicted for this saturday are going to be light and probably won't muddy the water and the surf isn't going to be big.

tick tock..tick tock

maybe its ure squid
thats in the greenies
eh?

got her on the incoming tide last night about 8:00 p.m. I was solo so no on the water shot... had to settle for driveway shot. bait was thick and took all of my frozen squid within 1 hour. had to use greenbacks.

the morning bite has been weak but things are heating up.
