Launched at 200am sunday, made squirts, then started drifting through the floatilla. NE wind, N current, 62f water, clear with a bright waning/full moon. White dog gets his two before I even get picked up and at greylight all the crusty drunks are shouting "its over we're limited an going in" when I get hit hard on the spectra rig. She fought like a champ and kelped me in 70 ft of water. Another 10 minutes later i had my PB :wsb:at 41.5 lbs, with no gaff. Landed at the shores before the sun was up over mt soledad and theres ten dudes gearing up "get out there guys!!"
Everyone who was up early got fish. Good times with Trever! :cheers1:
Thank you scallywag :notworthy:for letting me use your bloodsoaked, squiddly inked, stank-yak... Damn that revo is nice.

Just another quick note for those in the know... This girl still hadn't spawned out yet. She had a belly full of eggs, and August is almost over! What a year for the ghost. At this rate I hope the water never warms up.:sifone:

We arrived and launched right after the early birds were headed in. Didn't see much on the bite, I believe only one 20+lb yt came up. My buddy Tone wasn't feeling well, he went in early and got tossed. For whatever reason he had decided not to fasten down his bait tank, crate with lures and some other things...luckily all he lost was a plastic container with sinkers. I could be wrong but I believe that you (chris) gave me your left over squid.

Yep that was me, I only used two pieces of squid all night! Believe it or not, more were caught on dead bait than live! Too bad the bite didn't hold up for you guys... Guess pre-dawn was the ticket.

The surf wasn't too big, but still a good idea to strap your tank down hahaha! Try landing with a limit of seabass (nice one whitedog)!

Besides having someone putting you in the know is there a way to figure out when squid are coming through the canyon (spawning correct), and getting up at 2am to go fishing is a great idea? I'm assuming people don't just decide to launch at 2am but hey I could be wrong. I have read that spawning peaks from May to June, is there a pattern, something to look for,. If you don't want to put it on the forum you can pm me ;).

Thanks.

I dont know if you have the opportunity to swing by LJ in the evening but if you do and there seems to be a small city on the water...lots of lights, that is a good indicator there are squid. If you dont but head out on the water during the day and pass over an area that has a squid smell....there are squid in the water. Also, if you are fishing and hear dogs throwing up, that is another indicator, they will gorge themselves on our favorite cephalopods until the cant, throw up, and repeat. A little like the Romans, or celebrities I imagine. Or, get a heads up from the guys who fish 2x(+) a week.

Joe Beck: What Wizz Bang said, look for the light boats and listen for the barfing seals. Actually going out at 200am is a product of not having a girlfriend, nor a social life!

Dan: Crazy so they could potentially spawn almost year round? By the way thanks for that mental image, I'll remember that next time I'm on a dive!

launching et 2:00 am could come from a good night of celebrating and someone saying " Hey , I bet the bite would be good right now " the next thing you know your loaded up and hitting the water ,has happend way too mant times but has alwas been productive .One of my friends became the 5th person to successfully swim the length of lake Tahoe 22.1 miles ,and did it in the dark of night ,the first person to do so ,congradulations Clark
