Striped Bass

I know this is a saltwater forum, however with all the recent discussion/pictures on striped bass, I have to ask the question: Does anyone fish the local Southern California lakes for striped bass? If so, where and how do you do it? I hear they are great fighters and also very good table fare.:farmer:

I'm certain more people can chime in on this, but I know Diamond Valley Lake, and the Colorado river i.e. Lake Havasu are hot spots for nice size stripers. I can't think of any other lakes that are really in So Cal that hold stripers... Casitas maybe? Zara Spooks, Hedon topwater lures, rattle traps, and swimbaits are usually a good bet if you're fishing artificials. Otherwise cut sardines/ anchovies are a good bait to soak.

I used to live up north and thats all I used to fish for look at my avatar picture. In lakes I would use a fluke with a hook only so it will stay on top, or poppers, shad minnows. There very fun to catch and stupid. lol they will strike atleast twice if you miss the first time.

Do you know if DVL allows SOT Kayaks?

I believe DVL only allows sit inside yaks... (I was tempted to head there earlier this summer, but that kind of killed it.)

lake skinner and they are fun to catch whe nthey plant rainbows you can take big rainbow trout swimbaits near the launch ramp and they absolutely crush the things like wolves. and pretty good to eat for freshwater fish.. not sure if you can take a kayak in though

DVL seems to be the best local bet. I am a member of a SoCal flyfishing forum and several of the posters catch stripers and largemouth bass on DVL.

My understanding is that the stripers prey heavily on shad, so it may require a lot of chasing the breaking bait to get a striper.

Go to Blue Water Tackle in Solana Beach and seek a red headed gentleman named Hunter- he will tell you all you need to know about the local striped bass....

I know Silverwood LAke has Striped bass, wouldn't reccommend eating it though

It might be far for you but Castaic and Pyramid have stripers there too. And they allow SOT kayaks.

Yeah, I agree with Silverwood probably being the best local choice. I saw that article, too a while back. I'm sure the trout are probably ok to eat, I don't think they get many hold-overs, but I'd release the stripers. They don't charge anything to launch a kayak, but they'll do a hull inspection so make sure your boat is dry. I think they're up to $10 to get in the gate now. The wind gets real heavy in the afternoon. Cleghorn Cove is good to drift with anchovie.
