View Full Version : 2011 Islander Mothership Schedule

OEX
11-02-2010, 12:45 PM
The 2011 Schedule for OEX Mothership Trips aboard The Islander has been set.

This year we will be offering several new trips that should provide some awesome fishing.

In addition to the 1.5 day trips to SCI that have become standard, the 2011 season will also be featuring day trips to the Coranado Islands and a 7 day trip that will fish the Mexican coast including Cedros, San Martin, and Sac Reef.

For those who have not done a trip on the Islander, anglers who have been out on these trips before will tell you that nobody does it better. Want the proof? Read the reports from past trips, customers have not been disappointed by this boat and crew.

Trip prices all include Food and non-alcoholic beverages.

3 full meals a day plus snacks on multi-day trips and on the full day it will be breakfast, snacks, and a simple burger dinner.

Trip Prices do not include Mexican permits. These run 15.00 for a day permit. Anglers that have one-year permits will be allowed to use these.

1.5 day SCI~ 295.00

1.5 day trips offer a full day of fishing. These trips are planned to run to SCI.

May 13-15
May 20-22
June 17-19

2.5 day SCI~ 495.00

2 full days of fishing. Departs Friday night and returns Monday morning. Most have found these trips to be a better format than 1.5 day.

June 10-13- Trip Full

*New Trip*- June 3-6

7 day Mexican Coast~ 1,999.00 --- Canceled

6 full days of phenomenal fishing. Cedros should be holding brute yellows and if you ever wanted a 10lb Calico San Martin is some of the best bass fishing you will ever see.

June 3-10

Full Day Coronado Islands~ 125.00

This trip will be departing the morning of May 15th after the 1.5day trip returns. After the kayaks are loaded we will make the short run to the islands where you will get a full day of fishing. After dinner is served the boat will then head back to the dock. This is the perfect trip to get your feet wet if you have never been on a mothership trip before.

To book your reservation on these trips or for more details please call OEX Mission Bay at 619-866-6129.

We look forward to another exciting season of mothership fishing with you.

Will there be any surfing opportunities on the 7 day trip? Jason was trying to do a 7 day fish/surf trip last year and we couldn't get enough people, I was bummed.

If anyone is on the fence about doing a trip on the Islander just do it. Great boat, great crew, and a boatload of like-minded kayak fishing people.

no 2.5 day trips? bummer, love those. you can target one thing one day and have another day to change up. 1.5's are awesome too but you almost gotta be single-minded. oh well, i'll book at least one or two. june trips fit my schedule perfectly!!

the turnaround islands trip sounds pretty cool. gets me to thinking...

for those that haven't been on one yet, DO IT!!! the boat and crew are amazing. they do it right. it's not a boat that says "hey, throw a few kayaks on", but the whole thing, top to bottom, is catered to us. they know exactly how to get the yaks in the water, how to get everything rolling, and exactly where to put us. I've done three so far, each one is better than the last.

Just spoke with Shane from the Islander and told him some of us were disappointed by the lack of 2.5 day trips.

He told me that if there is interest we can always change any of the 1.5 day into a 2.5 day (with the exception of the one where we are running the Coronados trip).

Anybody have any input on this one? If we changed a trip to a 2.5 day would you sign up for it?

The 2.5 day format is a much more relaxed trip as you dont feel you need to be on the water every second of the trip to make it worth it.

Gents, Just curious, but I do mostly bass fishing from my yak - I have most of the gear i would need for this trip due to some time out in Florida for a military school, but would this be a decent way to kind of "break in" to some "deep water" fishing? Trip sounds awesom, but I sure don't want to get out there, find out I'm in way over my head and wreck it for anyone else!:linesnap:

Unless you cause someone to lose fish or act like a complete ass you most likely won't ruin it. Depending on the group you may have some great talent to learn from. And you are a VHF call away from a zodiac buzzing out to you full speed for support. So, would be a good "deep water" learning trip. Plus, you just need to paddle to the island for bass if you decide deep is not for you

Call the boat the week before & see what is happening. Unless you need an excuse to go shopping, in which case you need 8 custom sticks from 10# to 60# :):) and two speed reels for each.

That said, I'll probably plan on a bass bait stick, bass plastic stick, jigstick, yoyo/heavy bait stick, 20-30# baitstick, & my bounceball panga stick.

me too. damn, was really looking forward to fishing that trip. guess I'll have to make other plans, seeing as it will probably get cancelled :biggrinjester: :biggrinjester: :biggrinjester:

as for gear, I primarily target the calico, so bring a range of bassin' sticks. I bring a couple of swim bait rods, 15-20# class. also, bring my slug stick, 50# spectra/30# flouro topshot. calico on slugs, it don't get any better!! and I'll also bring another spectra rod for the weedless kelp jigs.

never go out without a jig stick, 'cause you never know.

if you target yellows, whatever works for you in LJ. a couple of bait sticks and a jig stick or two.

nice thing about the mothership trips is that you can bring more rods and leave some on the boat. so you want to spend the morning for example going after the bass, leave the bait sticks on board. afternoon, go deeper for yt, leave the bass sticks on board. the 2.5 day is awesome because it gives you much more time and you're not rushed, and trying to cram it all in in one day.

Good place to shorten the learning curve. You can fish open water without a surf launch or super long paddle. Always seem to be some veterans along that you can learn from, and if you get in trouble the zodiac is just a VHF call away.

The biggest challenge is getting into & out of the kayak from the swimstep.

some guys bring lots of $1 bills. and no it's not for the strippers but triple nipple. the islander has everything BUT strippers, unless shane and john have "upgraded" the accomodations. maybe that should be an OEX thing :biggrinjester::biggrinjester::biggrinjester:

seriously, if you do it right, meaning on your ass in the yak all day with a short break for lunch, you'll be too beat for anything else. maybe a book, or an ipod or something. if sleeping on a boat is a problem, and for some it is (noise), bring soft foam earplugs. maybe some advil or aspirin. I mean, you will probably be in your yak for over a dozen hours each day. I'm no spring chicken anymore. I'll be sore as hell.

I'd recommend of course battery chargers and backup batteries for VHF, etc. that's fishing perhaps, but kinda helpful.

towels, soap, toothbrush, all that personal hygiene crap that I don't care about :D:D dude, you're fishing!!

the other thing that I would recommend is snacks. yeah, they feed you great for sure, but I always pack a bunch of granola bars, crackers (those things kids put in their lunches. the orange crackers with the cheese or peanut butter, in wrapped packs of 6), maybe some fruit, and powerade. sometimes you need that carb/sugar boost and something to drink.

bring a few changes of socks and underwear. other thing, bring a variety of clothing, stuff you can layer. and yes, even a fairly warm jacket for night. jsut remember, you can leave anything on the boat, even go back for it if necessary. better to bring and not need than not have. that applies to gear as well. bring the extra jig stick or bass rod, or whatever. if you don't use it, big deal.

We discussed this a bit with Shane at FH Long Beach and I would guess we will figure out exactly whats going to happen by the end of the month. It will most likely be the 7day on the chopping block however because all the 1.5's seem to be filling while the 7 day is not.

Anyone have a clue what the average spending cost is on the 2.5 day trip? I already paid the cost of the trip so I'm just curious to know if I need to bring$ 100 dollars or $500 dollars?

that all depends on how much you drink!

I don't drink so I'm sure that alone should save me at least a benjamin

seriously though...
extra cash is needed for tips, whatever your drink tab is, and for fish cleaning if you keep fish...(please remember to CPR calicos)

my fishing cohorts and I use this theory for tips on sportboats:
$10.00 per crew member per day...
one cook, three deckhands = $40.00 per day..
this is on top of the gally tab and the fish cleaning...
I have been appauled on sportboats by the lack of tippage from some folks..the crew on sportboats work their butts off...
and they only make tips! if cheapskates don't tip, they make no money...

another theory I have heard some use is 15% of the cost of the trip...
$495.00x15%=$74.00 that works too...

I like the $10.00 a guy per day theory...

The guys on the Islander work their butts off to give you a quality experience. Remember that with the kayaks it is a limited load, so less passengers to tip. Tip heavy!

I doubt it's going.
But, when are we gonna get the official word?

I don't know what we are waiting on. Is OEX/Islander trying to avoid the refund? Does the Islander make the call? This is a major deal to leave people hanging... I appreciate the effort to keep the trip alive, but I am missing an opportunity to sign up for a trip later in the month. I can't afford to go on two trips. No matter how much I would like to.

No I think they were referring to the trip after ours which is the 1.5 day.

Any one know if the yellows been running in the area or we going to be slugging Calico's all day?

Gents,

ALRIGHT, ITS GO TIME BABY! 2.5 days of fishing glory here we go! So, like the total newb I am, I have a few more questions...

I think I got everything for the boat, but along with hygiene, chargers, $100 bucks for drinks and tips, I am ASSUMING a sleeping bag is a must right? or is this like the army where you get issued "linen" on board?!

Terminal Tackle - suggestions would be cool, but even cooler would be a local spot to hit when I get into town on Friday morning... anybody feel like linking up somewhere for a last minute supply run (where in the hell do you get Slug-O's in SD?!)?

Yak-CHECK, PFD-CHECK, VHF Radio-CHECK, Rods and Reels-CHECK, Upgraded Fishfinder-CHECK...

So what else do I need!

Thanks, Looking foward to slaughtering the Calico's!:jig:

I wouldnt mind having some more info like above...with one other question.

Does anyone ever bring any spearfishing equipment? Seems like a good place to just bring a hawaian sling to go find some fish if nothing is bitting. Thanks

You may need something larger than a Hawaiian sling!

I'm pretty much set, got all my metal lures packed, picked up a few more MC Swimbaits, lead heads, some 30lb flouro leader & got a reel serviced. I carry all my gear in a large tote, makes it easier to transport and less likely that i'll forget something.

Did you get a call from OEX? I notice you said you were leaving at 5 from OC.

They told me to be there at the dock around 5 because it takes a long time to load the yaks

First off, Yes guys youll want to be there by like 6 so that the crew can load all the boats and get out of there at a decent time. There are a good amoutn of poeple on this trip which means a lot of gear to load.

Second, I currently have 4 open spots if anybody is interested. Folks had to drop off meaning that anybody who wants on could do so.

one time we left at 2:00 and did not get there untill 6:30....
4.5 hours of hell!
after that trip, we always leave here (Woodland Hills) by 12:30 at the latest...leave plenty of time for freeway madness!

other than that...
we'll roll with the punches and fish our brains out no matter where we are!

Looks like 5-6 miles on the leeward side are gonna be open at least. I'm pretty much an SCI noob, so I'll leave it up to the Captain.

Yakrider is right, tho...no point in stressing over it, Let's just fish! :reel:

I had a 1.5 day trip cancelled in May so I'm in for either a 1.5 or a 2.5 day trip, preferably a 2.5, but June is not good for me...it doesn't look like any other trips are scheduled after June. Any talk of plans for an Islander trip in September/early October to Cortez or SCI?
