Met three willing kayakers on the beach at 6:15, and headed out from
small Big Rock to the happy hunting grounds. The current was wrong and
we fished anyway and waited it out. Unfortunately it never got right
and our dedicated flotillla managed only a handful of smaller rockfish and
returned a few tiny ones in the downhill current and stained 56 degree
water.
I gave up all my tips and tricks and tried everything. Bad current = lockjaw! :(
Highlights were a treefish, barber pole, sculpin, and a close encounter with a
pod of dolphins (porpoise?) that was just immense, and seemed to stretch
a half mile.
For a while it was glassy out there, just a beautiful morning to be out on
the water.
The breeze kicked in and we headed for shallower water where we found a
decent bite using squid in 80 of water near the kelp. We doubled our
catch in a matter of minutes, and soon headed in for a landing.
We only caught one vermillion all day, but I went home with a handful of
assorted rockfish. Not overly excited about the day but then I spent 14
bucks to get skunked for trout yesterday, so .... I'll take a ton of
excercise and some taco meat anyday.
Clockwise from top: 2 Tree Fish, a Vermillion, a Starry , and a Sculpin.
