Hey guys, we had a fun trip at Dana this Sunday, nice people, nice weather.

Anyone want to go chase halibut and bass at Long Beach on Saturday?

I have not been to LB in a few years, but have had very good results there.

A few guys here fish Cabrillo often for Halibut, it would be nice to get one of these guys to go on Saturday....;) You know who you are.

I REALLY need to bring home a halibut...., the wife is making fun of me!

Who is in?

Matt

Tim, Erick, Bret, Roby, and others,

We will meet at the Cabrillo Beach boat ramp on the protected side of the breakwater by 6:30am. Lets go get them Butts!

Matt

You can google map the LB harbor and the northern end of it is cabrillo.

You never know.... :D

Actually you'd be surprised... I have a lot of really good friends in the fishing community, especially among serious fisherman who fish boats offshore. Fred Archer and I were talking about it once. He said all this internet stuff is all bullshit, that when you meet a man in person and look into his eyes you can tell if he's the real deal... :D

JJ is certainly the real deal.... Without a doubt.

Last time I fished with JJ was maybe a decade ago, so I doubt he'll even remember me.

It was tuna trip and he stopped well short of the fleet on a mark in the middle of the night. He came down and I was the only guy on deck, we tossed sardines and chunks but only got one YFT up into the lights and I could not get them to bite. Stayed up all night just talking. Great guy, full of info. At gray light it just went ballistic, we never moved and limited out the boat in a few hours.

Two things really stuck out to me from that trip. I had a eight foot sabre rigged with a slosh and thirty that I had tied a 6xjr to. Every time I'd land a bait fish I'd take a break from bait and fish Iron for a while to keep the other guys from getting pissed off. Tried and tried to get bit on it and never had a strike. Ran it on the surface, skipped it, did the drop crank, flutter, yo yo, the whole nine yards.

JJ asked if he could try it, and then in less then a minute he had a fish on. He ended hooking up, and handing off, a dozen or more tuna on my rod that day.

What I'm saying is that the man has serious skills.

The other thing was after we got our limit he did not head in but instead had us tie on marlin jigs and then started hunting Big Eye. He pulled me up top and had me watch the meter with him. Showed me the marks they make and how to work them to get them into the jigs. Never got bit but it was a great thing to see and I learned a lot from him that day.

Most Captains once limited would of just minimized their cost and headed in. Not JJ he gave them the full trip, burned through his fuel, giving them their tuna along with a chance at a real trophy fish.

At the landing he invited me out for drinks, and we shot the shit for hours, over Jagermeister. I was going to unofficially deckhand (deadhead) for him the next day, but my ride got too drunk and backed out at the last minute, so I had to head back to LA.

That was my last trip with him as right after that I got my skiff, and then later started playing around with Kayaks.

In my opinion your not going to find a finer Captain then JJ in the whole So Cal fleet. I think your in for a hell of a trip and I am truly envious.

Sorry for the thread jack. JJ is just such a good Captain, I couldn't help but bring it up.

At any rate, Good luck all!!!

Jim

Stinkymatt,
I may hit Cabrillo this weekend, but no plans yet (I'm missing LJ)
but if you have any questions pm me and I will see if I can help you find your way around the "sewer"

I live 5 minutes from the launch
But GregAndrew is the King of the Cabrillo, he must have hit that "sewer" at least a 100 days in 2010... and got himself the WCW Championship from those dirty butt infested waters

They always seem to find some excuse to pretend I'm the bad guy, not much I can do about it, as I tend to speak my mind, and I'm not too good at kissing ass to fit in. This all looks sooo darn familiar, as a school psychologist I see this banter all the time; it so reminds me of high school. But that's what the internet has become, so what should we expect from those stuck in the high school time warp.

Can we now get back to assisting the OP, and actually providing some usable information, as for some of you, the places in question are your back yards. And considering that volume of information some of you possess, I'm sure you could put the guys lure right on top of some nice butts, even if the water is some of the filthiest around.

Simply nothing else I can add, as I don't fish areas I'm not willing to eat the fish from.

Mr Edit aka passive aggressive, megalomaniac strikes again...here is what nimrod actually said:

OK... So you were offended because?

1. You are a "detractor" who "fishes butts in the sewage"?

2. You simply "hate my guts"?.

Or is it both... :D I mean it's rather obvious you took those statements personally. :sifone:

Since my comments were not addressed to you, and did not mention your name why on earth did you take them personally and get so bent out of shape?

Once I saw you got your panties in a bunch I had two choices: I could either attack in kind like some internet moron, and start calling you childish names as well, or try to tone things down for the good of the board. I personally feel the name calling thing is rather retarded (no insult meant to retards here) so I just edited the post and removed anything that could even remotely be seen as problematic, because I wanted to shorten it anyway, and did not want to destroy the thread.

I figured it was done.

The fact your still trying to take offense, or act like you were provoked is pretty hilarious especially since even the original post that you have reposted never mentioned you.

I mean you can call me all the names you want on the web, and talk a lot of stupid macho bullshit online, like how you think I would tremble in your mere presence LMAO!!!

..... but I'd say that if you continue that behavior you're just going to look like a fool, and honestly it says more about your issues then mine.

Well I got to get out of here if I'm going to hoop the tide.

Bugs are different because the do not store fat in the same way as fish. I hoop lots of places I don't keep fish like the MDR breakwall. Ballona creek has got to be one of the dirtiest outfalls around, but the bugs there are just fine.

There was a big study on contaminates in fish and crustaceans a few years back and Lobsters consistently scored better then fish.

Personally I don't like fishing Pedro because I think it's kind of an Ugly place to fish. For me it's just a place I pass through to get to Cat, or go troll Marlin on the slide.

Jim, that's just not fair, not everyone can just zip out to the islands, to catch butts from clean water, hook-up on WSB after WSB, nor troll for marlin.

The address for the Cabrillo Marine Acquarium is 3720 Stephen M. White in San Pedro, Ca. When you enter the parking lot, the boat launch ramp is all the way to your left, just passed the Lifeguard station. Pay attention to where you park cause most of the area is designated for trailers.

GregAndrew

BTW, while I will agree that there is storm drain sewer runoff making its way to the open ocean through the all of our harbors, the "sewage" is piped directly into the open waters of our coast.

You'll be fine with tankers as long as your not out in the middle of the main channel. Personally I like to fish the edges and drops anyway. Tankers are big and easy to see. Just keep in mind they can not stop or change directions. Party boats will almost run you over for fun, just to see you squirm, and watch the small boats and jet skis as a lot of those guys are just oblivious when it comes to how to run a boat in the ocean, and will run you down out of pure stupidity.

The real thing to watch for is wind if you launch at Cabrillo. If whips around to the southwest and starts blowing directly at you from the direction of launch or PV you might want to head in. They don't call it Hurricane Gulch for nothing.

I used to launch my wood kayak on the outside and fish rockfish out on the edges of the Catalina Channel..

Even on perfectly flat days the wind would often come up at noon, and then you'd have a long paddle fighting the wind just to make the cut at the lighthouse.

That day in the pics Looks nice but by the time I got to the lighthouse it was blowing full bore, rough as hell, and it took everything I had to paddle from the lighthouse to the beach. Worst conditions I've ever paddled in.

I've seen it get even worse from my skiff, several times I've got stuck at Catalina, when it was just impossible to cross the channel due to the wind at PV.

I had a trip a few seasons ago where it got so rough off Pt Ferman I wasn't sure I was going to make it. That after trolling Marlin all morning in flat calm seas. The conditions can change very fast. The breakwall cuts the waves but not the wind and PV just creates a wind effect that concentrates the wind and makes it worse. I'm just saying no matter what the forcast is watch out for wind. If you fish there enough you will see what I mean.

Sorry for the chicken shit posts in your thread, once the aggro-dudes got involved I figured it would go down hill. What can you say it's the internet. Lots of finger pointing and little substance.

Pedro is actually a pretty great place to fish especially if your just starting out. It's probably the dirtiest water in California, but it's also the easiest place to catch big halibut in So. Cal.. Back in the 90's I skiff fished it a lot. Caught a bunch of halibut down there, and even once landed a seventy pound black seabass in there. If I was just concerned with running up Halibut numbers I'd probably still fish there more, but I don't really need the fish (I still have tuna halibut and seabass in my freezer) and these days about all I do down there is catch and release wall banging for lunker bass and occasionally hooping.

Personally I prefer the Long Beach end around the oil islands and the flats for em, there's a good hole to the west of white Island and I have found the west and north faces of both islands to be good at times, but you can get butts in many spots up and down the harbor, and Pedro can be pretty decent. My buddies and I used to call the Pedro end the Sewer because after a good rain you can see all kinds of shit in there. Diapers, condoms, syringes, you name it. One piece of advice I will give you is if you get cuts on your hands always disinfect them really well when you get home. That area especially after rains get's a high bacteria count, and you can get some pretty funky infections if you cut yourself fishing there. I like to carry superglue and glue my cuts closed right away when fishing the wall, as it sure beats a nasty infection.

At any rate good luck.

After a rain you couldn't find a dirtier place to fish then the oil islands. Did you know the LA river dumps right in to the islands. Every piece of shit from LA to long beach ends up in that river.I have seen outhouses floating in the long beach side. They have to put containment booms on the channel to catch the big turds. So keep telling yourself Long Beach is cleaner.

Based on the descriptions that have been posted this is what I'm imagining LB would look like to those of you who have never been.

. So keep telling yourself Long Beach is cleaner.

It's like arguing which side of the toilet is cleaner :biggrinjester:

I like the areas I described based on experience: the bottom is usually more sandy there so you can fish baits tighter to the bottom, and honestly I've found better bites there especially on spawning fish. It's a personal preference, based on how I like to rig, and fish caught. I've always figured there was more sand on the Long beach side do to the river.

Like I already posted I used to fish there but hardly hit it anymore. I'm not expert on it though I know guys that know that area like the back of thier hand. I have plenty of options to fish other fish in much cleaner water, so it's really no skin off my back either way. I was just trying to give the guys a heads up on where they might find some fish on the Long Beach side.

Hey I've been meaning to ask you: Are you the same Dockrat that got banned at Allcoast and still posts at FNN?

If so I had no idea you were into kayaking.

LOL... Yeah it's pretty dirty by La Jolla standards.

Even in Santa Monica Bay it can be pretty nasty after it rains. Just too many people upstream, and every piece of garbage they throw into the street ends up in our waters.

I just give it a few days to cycle out after a good rain, I've never had good fishing right after a rain in either the harbor or bay.

8 miles.... that's nothing :D

No doubt.....You definitely do not want to fish that area from Cabrillo as it's a long paddle and it's also down wind so if the wind comes up you'd be screwed.

I always launch at Davies when I fish there, because it's down wind but the closest launch for a kayak is probably Long Beach.
