Am I damaging my kayak? Pics taken

I noticed on my last trip that the bottom molding on one side the kayak is beginning to stick out.


This is how i normally store the kayak the side that the kayak is resting on is the side with the molding beginning to stick out:

I can't really see anything from your pics. Yet, from your pics I would think the way you store the yak would create any issues. However, the plastic yaks are subject to changes in shape from exposure to heat; it softens them which makes them susceptible to changes in shape from pressure and gravity.


I do however have no idea of what your referring to as molding.

Have a yard, get rid of a bunch of that crap in your garage and build a hoist system. Kayak are molded plastic but will and contour itself to whatever its sitting on. One day I left mine on a sawhorse for 30minutes in the sun and when I finally realized what I did it had already molded itself to the shape of the area that was supporting it. Now I never lay it flat or on its side for long periods.

Building a hoist system is easier than you think. Since you have the space for it why not do it?

yeah, I wouldn't leave your boat layin like that, if you have to store it on its side I would make or get those wall mount brackets for the yak, however I believe the hoist/sling idea is best...see ya saturday channel 78....b

The picture with the two arrows show about 1 or 2 mm of the bottom park of the kayak sticking out from the side. I have brick walls covered with cement so the only way i can store a kayak is probably with a hoist system. Anyone know of a good hoist system...

It may not have to do with how you store you Kayak but how you transport your Kayak. When you transport it do you do so with it up on the side like you store it or do you lay it down either top up or top down? Also what type of straps are you using to secure it to your vehicle? Are you using the rachet style or the type that sinch down.

Here's why I ask about the straps, if you are using the rachet style you could be racheting them too tight and if the Kayak is left on the roof in the sun for any length of time while strapped down it could be causing that bulging. When I went to pick up my Yak from Jim Sammons and he saw I was using the Rechet straps and that was the first thing he recommended I change due to the chance it can cause issues with deforming. I have actually read many articles and talked to many people that sell kayaks and they all say the best way to store a Kayak is on its side.

When I am by myself i put it upside down on my roof rack and run the ties through the scupper holes and tie it to my rack.

When i take the other one, i put one upside down and the other on the J Rack.

The "molding" looks like you are referring to where the two pieces of the mold come together and were not trimmed as well as they should have in production. It is purely cosmetic. Storing your kayak on it's side is ideal....you are not harming it.

That is a special device that keeps the fish at a cold temperature and it goes in side the x-factor and keeps the fish fresh while in the hot sun, i have it attached to the flux capacitor.

I have one of my yaks hanging from a hoist so its out of the way and the other, well just sits half on a crate and the other half on the yak cart. I know this is not ideal, but don't have the room to hang the second. Oh and no deformation on the hull either.

Today I was cleaning my kayak putting a coat of UV protector and i sanded down the edge of the kayak where it was sticking out. You were correct it was purely cosmetic.

Every time i go out I inspect the kayak to make sure its still seaworthy.

Don't really have nothing to sell. I went thorough the garage and threw a lot of trash away.
That big blue bucket is 15 gallons of water in case of an earthquake, the boxes under the kayak are some leftover stone flooring and some books. I still have 2 small kids so i need the strollers. I just need to organize it better.

My wife said this is my best work yet, You should of seen the dog house i built a few years ago...It fell apart after the second rain storm...

you knew all the comments were coming about your garage.:) I have hobie stored in garage with side pressed in atlest 1/2 inch . garage must have been atleast 120 -130 degrees during peak of summer. probably need heat gun to press it back out. where can i buy one of those fish coolers for hobie?:bigear:

you will have to wait for the warmth but if you set that out on a hot day on the wheels or supported upside down in the heat the indentation should come out:reel:

Well done with the rack. Sometimes simple is just better. I had some 2x4's on the wall of my garage from the previous tenant that were used for their overhead storage. Had a couple screws sticking out about an inch and a half at an angle at either end not doing anything. So A couple pieces of sash cord with a bowline on each end and there we go...

Nice job not trying to get to tricky with it. If it works it works.
