I bought a few used (pretty much new) rods from a guy today. One he included is a 7 foot 12-30lb light / medium action Ugly Stik Tiger thats pretty much the newest of the three.
Should I use it for anything?
I usually fish a lot heavier than that.

Yeah, this thing still has the plastic wrapper and price tag on it. It was bought at Sports Chalet, I wonder if I could take in there and exchange it for a 15-40 or 20-50 Ugly Stik with no receipt?

Don't be too eager to "BEEF UP" for the BIG fish. That kind of a stick has many uses and may make some fishing more exciting. You ain't gonna be thumpin 40lb YT all year long, or maybe you will.:D:D

true
It just seems like I'm always fishing in rocks or kelp or some sort of cover and a heavy stick comes in handy for yanking the fish out.
I have way more fun fishing lighter tackle..without question..heck a catch that still sticks out in my mind...I caught a 23# yellow on a roached out trout rod with 10# test...80 anglers on the Freelance that day at Catalina...pissed everyone off big time.

use it to your advantage, take it back and spend the credit on what you do need....:jig:

Yeah, but I actually could use a 7 foot 'lighter' rod just not so sure about the 12-30 light action...hmm...it would make small calico's a lot of fun

well it depends on if you have a fav rod yet, or if you need a certain set up, but the credit would #1 be fun, #2 get what you need, if you don't need the rod IMO...

i just bought a nice shimano rod from sports chalet last night. stinkymatt and greg andrews had convinced me that i should use a lighter tackle to attack those butts. mine is a 8-17 lb test and med fast action.
if i was you, i'd keep that rod and use it, for the price of three for $100 it seems like a steal. the one i got cost me $60 just for one.

I say fish the hell out of it. What reel will you be using? I've used rods like that with Penn 500s to catch tuna and YT. mike

That's my favorite rod for halibut. Sensitive enough to feel bite but strong enough to bring them up.

Yeah, I think I'll end up keeping it actually. This will be my small bass and halibut rod
I'll mount my sealine SLOSH 20 to this rod
