I went offshore of Dana Point yesterday .....while trolling for yellowtail and yellowfin tuna when looked back behind me, I saw a huge hammerhead following me.....I was scare and screaming to my friend......Shark....shark ....shark......and the shark disappear .......

I just now got the video to finally play. That was just asking for trouble. He was tempting fate. Sometimes fate bites back! Literally

I just saw the photo of the bite on his foot. That is ever so close to his dorsales pedis artery which is right along the tendon of the big toe. If a tooth would have severed that artery it would have snapped back up into his foot and they would have had one hell of a time stopping the bleeding. He is lucky! It could have been a lot worse

Guy gets bit by said shark...

I would call it an unfortunate accident if he didn't know...or actually see the shark before it bit him...but according to the witness they were both fully aware of the sharks presence...and he still chose to dangle his foot over the side...:rolleyes:

It's not like this guy was new to the sport. He catches sharks. He handles sharks. He has video of sharks in his lap on his kayak. He calls himself Sharkman.

So he has enough experience to know better. That's a tough lesson to learn. And the hard way to learn it!

IMHO, part of the problem is that many today speak of sharks ONLY as magnificent creatures who are as harmless as hamsters. Thus, some feel comfortable dangling their feet in shark infested waters. Sharks are magnificent creatures. They are also vicious predators and must always be seen as a potential threat.

Just in case there is a single person on this board that is not aware yet....

There are sharks in the ocean.

There is a higher concentration of them this year because of the warmer than average water temps

They will bite you

It does hurt

A lot!

Keep your hands and feet inside the ride at all times!

I bet he doesn't hang his feet off the yak again, at least for awhile.

I am going to have to say this was a definite lapse in judgment but hey we all make mistakes, we're human. Luckily he walked away from it with his life, which is what really matters. Some people on here are bashing his decision making, if you ask me it is a learning experience for ALL of us. Just like the time we learned if you are not in the best physical shape it's probably safest that you develop an efficient wet entry plan before you head out in rough waters in the dark.

Anyone hear the recent news about this?

It turns out that the HH was actually hooked when it bit the kayaker.


I love it when the stories change.

It looks like this guy has way more experience with sharks than most people. After handling dozens, or perhaps hundreds of sharks without a major incident, I can see how someone could easily lose a bit of the fear that most people have. I wouldn't call him an idiot, but I think perhaps he just got too comfortable with them.

When you play with fire you're bound to get burned....

Prayers for a safe recovery and lesson learned!

Growing up I was always taught don't mess with sharks and they won't mess with you.

I don't know if it's the old surfing superstition, but I've never kept a shark. Caught a lot shore fishing and in the kayak, but always released. And (knock on wood) they haven't messed with me while surfing or diving. But I also don't hang my feet out of the kayak when they are around, let alone hooked up.
