Went offshore LJ on Tuesday. Made it about 8 miles out-similar spot to last trip. Not much bird/tuna action at all. Saw one good foamer that is about it. Not much bait like last time. Long day, must have covered about 20mi. Conditions were pretty good; 5mph wind 3-4 foot swell. Saw lots of blue whales - one came right in front of my kayak and I followed it for a few minutes. It is amazing how glowing neon blue they are in the water. Made macs this time, got a yellow on the mac flyline on the way in at about 5 miles out, off the edge of the canyon, 800+ feet of water, about 17lbs I am guessing. Definitely the farthest out yellow I have caught on the kayak. Trolled Rapalas and mac flyline all day.

Well... I already made my mind up.:reel:

I was only a year off.
I thought last year we'd see bft in the canyon.
Seems pretty likely now.

Iceman 06-25-2015 07:51 AM

Yanni and I went for a 10 hour offshore from DP, kelps all over in that zone, went WSW then looped N and in plenty of bait balls on the meter, terns grouped up picking at bait, couple smaller porpoise schools but no fish in that area yesterday. Conditions were killer, other than the mixed short interval swell, this was around noon, winds stayed under 10 kts after peaking late morning. Parker obviously thought we knew what we were doing as they slid in and did a drift :D Water temps were 69-70 green.

Shit I thought you guys would do it.
Im tired of looking at that " plenty of bait balls on the meter, terns grouped up picking at bait, couple smaller porpoise schools but no fish in that area yesterday."
Next up, the Pt Loma crew.

Edit my last time out a cruiser came by w riggers out and trolled around me a couple times like I knew what I was doing. Or he just thought I was a patty.

not more than about 10k tomorrow mikey, lets go

Iceman 06-25-2015 02:46 PM

If I were going manana I'd launch Mariners point at 6 am ride out on the slack tide and make some macks along the Pt Loma kelp and head west with em 5 -6 miles, hang out and let the kooks disappear.

chuckt 06-25-2015 04:00 PM

Is mariners point park the closest launch to the entrance of mission bay?
I look at google map and see Mission point park, it is closer to the jetty. Anyone knows if kayak launch is possible there?

Iceman 06-25-2015 04:42 PM

All rocks along shore there. Mariners point closest.

Tuna on the yak has been on my brain this whole year. I haven't checked the conditions yet but I'm down to make a run Saturday.

So is that 10,000 boats or 10kts of wind?
Or both?

LBKayakDude 06-25-2015 06:10 PM

Conditions are looking a bit windy this weekend atleast from my forecast app. Anyone else have any input on that?

Dannowar 06-25-2015 06:11 PM

Both. That's why I'm doing lj. They'll be everywhere if they're out there. Launching south casa. It'll cut the paddle by a mile

Going in a red TI out of mission bay in the morning. PM before 10 if you want to link up. I have a seat available too for any HOW volunteers. Will be monitoring 68.

Nothing wrong with car camping, as I like to do that, too. But backpacking into the high country has its own unique rewards.

but did you drive to the trailhead?

Dannowar 06-26-2015 04:16 AM

Ran into some tech difficulties. Good luck guys that get out this weekend. Looks like next week for me.

Handymansd 06-26-2015 07:13 PM

I will be out looking for another, larger model, of the elusive BFT! Absolutely Epic! Launching Mariners point stupid/dumb early, heading a bit further out... N 9 between 9-12 miles is the plan. Using sail on Outback, fish the day away, return after dark.

ful-rac 06-26-2015 09:06 PM

10-15 knots of wind and 2-3 ft wind waves forecast for the weekend....careful out there guys...

the dude 06-27-2015 08:12 AM

Tuesday-wednesday look good for offshore.

monstahfish 06-27-2015 09:57 AM

Went out about 6-7 miles nw of MB and saw one boil for about 10 seconds. Something took a swing and miss at my trolled sardine just before the fish popped up. I got there by following a pod of whales and a few birds for a while that eventually took me to where the mass of birds and fish made their appearance. It got kind of snotty about 1 and I looked around and couldn't find anything too compelling so I started sailing back. The tandem island was killer for trolling under sail and I don't think I would have been very happy out that far in a regular yak especially with the big following wind swell on the way in. I will try again probably next week if the weather looks good.

Zed 06-27-2015 11:17 AM

Such an incredible opp to just be in that position. There are going to be more this Summer in that 100+fathom zone. As long as those chovy meatballz are around the fish will pop up on them.

Iceman 06-27-2015 02:04 PM

Wednesday........prob Mariners Point or LJ

A phone call this morning-- asking if I knew if the Balboa Angling Club's Dorado First Fish Flag had been taken this year---- no, not that I knew of-- Good, Steve - http://www.jdsbiggame.com/images/Fis...0june%2028.jpgowner of the Honny said Argy just got one-- hooked it at 7:45 this morning on a purple and black tuna feather --we were only about 7 out of Newport headed south maybe 6 off Laguna-

monstahfish 07-01-2015 09:13 AM

Who's in for friday? I'll be either in an island probably going out of MB.

Dannowar 07-01-2015 05:53 PM

Got about 7 miles out with the iron men. Stopped on a kelp holding yellowtail about 4 out. Decided to call it early and fish inside. Looooooooong paddle, no tuna seen. I'm beat.
