Fellas, wake up and do some reading...Kayakers from SD, OC, IE, wherever...

If you think we are all about saving LJ, wake up my OC brothers...

If your area is closed, where ya gonna go? San O?

O'side? Barren waste land, minimal kelp.

I've got my options, albeit not launch friendly, but it will do.

They want to take away the whole So Cal bight, our presence and voices need to be heard...

We are being challenged because they, ya they, think we will just roll with the punches, and make plans accordingly.

'Their' plans are set in motion, we need to disrupt their plans.

We as a collective whole, need to be heard and have our presence felt.

I'm a renegade, I do not care what they deem is in my best interest...I will continue to not buy fish.

And your thoughts are?

tylerdurden 05-17-2009 01:22 PM

Bump

Time to show up. We may lose all of our spots in SoCal. Only place left to kayak fish might be the bay when this is over. When all is said and done, did you do anything to help?

PAL 05-17-2009 02:17 PM

That's one hell of a kayak fishing contingent! Way to step up. You need to push hard from here on out, the pressure for an MPA at La Jolla is intense.

Holy Mackerel 05-18-2009 06:32 AM

Bump!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

tylerdurden 05-18-2009 08:09 AM

The public comment portion of this meeting was scheduled at 7pm just so it was easier for the public to attend. Lets let them hear it since they wanted to hear from us.

tylerdurden 05-18-2009 10:00 AM

Not even 25 guys?

This is serious. I saw more than 25 kayaks fishing this weekend.

What about representitives from OEX, FastLane, AYS? What about the kayak guides and website purveyors? For some of us it's a hobby and way of life. For you guys it is a business too. Don't make me name names. Are you going to show up?

Holy Mackerel 05-18-2009 10:10 AM

Guys n gals, read this, to help you get your thoughts, and comments together. Remember if you do not feel like speaking showing up to support your RSG in numbers is very crucial, and you can cede your time to others.

Suggestions for Effective Public Comment:

Public participation is one of the cornerstones of the California Marine
Life Protection Act (MLPA) Initiative and is greatly valued. One method for
participating in the process is by making comments at public meetings. A
short list of recommendations has been prepared to help maximize the
effectiveness of public comments:

1. Generally comments must be made within a one to three minute time
period. The length of time allocated to each speaker is at the discretion of
the meeting convener and depends on several factors, including the number of individuals wishing to speak on a particular topic.

2. Speakers should identify themselves by name, indicate their main
interest or connection to the ocean (if desired), and succinctly summarize
their main message with as much specificity as possible. It is most
effective to keep your verbal message to no more than three main points and then provide details about those points, or additional information, in a written document.

3. Comments should focus on topics under the purview of the Marine
Life Protection Act (MLPA) and that are under consideration by the MLPA group you are addressing:

a. Policy comments and overarching planning issues for the Blue Ribbon Task Force (BRTF).

b. Science comments for the Science Advisory Team (SAT).

c. Comments on marine protected area (MPA) design and placement for the Regional Stakeholder Group (RSG).

4. When preparing comments, it is very helpful to consider the key
points you wish to have the group members bear in mind as they do their work or make decisions.

5. Multiple speakers with a shared message or from the same organization are encouraged and will be requested to combine their speaking points.

6. Questions or comments can be submitted in writing via email (
MLPAComments@resources.ca.gov) or standard mail (MLPA Initiative, c/o
California Natural Resources Agency, 1416 Ninth Street, Suite 1311,
Sacramento, CA 95814) are distributed to the MLPA Initiative groups and
posted on the MLPA website.

7. There will be an opportunity for public comment at each public meeting; for two-day meetings, comment may only be taken on one of the two days. Meeting agendas will denote when public comment is expected to occur, though please note that these times are only an approximation. Work sessions are not public meetings and do not have a public comment period.

8. Speakers are welcome to distribute written material to the groups. If materials are submitted at least three business days in advance of a meeting, they will be copied by MLPA staff and provided to the group
members; if materials are received less than three business days in advance
of a meeting, you must provide a sufficient number of copies for distribution, otherwise staff will copy and distribute the information after the meeting. Other media presentations, such as slides and videos, are only permitted by prior arrangement and may be limited depending on time availability. An alternate space in the venue may be provided for displaying the speaker's additional media information or written materials, as needed.

tylerdurden 05-18-2009 10:27 AM

And this was mentioned on BD...

Everyone wear Black. Black tshirt, black dress shirt, black jacket... Just make sure it is black. All fisherman, whether Kayak, H&L, and spearfisherman wear black. That way they can see how many of us there (hopefuly) are.

Writing letters, and donating money is the easy way out. Do things on their time, not your own to show how much you care. Show up.

Billy V 05-18-2009 11:04 AM

What time is the San Diego group leaving for the meeting on the 19th ??
I am trying to arrange my schedule to attempt this meeting.

Thanks

Depends on how much of the meeting you can, or want to attend. I would suggest leaving before 3PM, for traffic reasons. Public comment tomorrow is at 7PM, but the meeting starts at 8:00AM.

Tman 05-18-2009 03:20 PM

We are game on...thanks Chris for staying on top of this...:you_rock:

Don't know what Clay will say this time, but it comes from within. Maybe he will touch on the fact that is a safe launch, even for kids.

I am humbled (and outshined...:sifone:) just for the main fact that a 9 yr old understands the importance of being heard. And this time, he doesn't get to miss school yet still wants to go...safe to say he understands what is at stake...

See all of you there manana...

</TD><TD class=alt1 id=td_post_35143 style="BORDER-RIGHT: #ffffff 1px solid"><!-- message -->Any updates on the progress?

I was living in NorCal when the MLPA's came through and they pretty much arbitratily closed sections of the coast. Thanks to the tireless efforts of an few kayak fishermen and organizations some spots were saved. But it took a hell of a lot of effort. I'd hate to see good spots closed down there as well so if you can, get down to the hearings and be heard. If you can't make it support someone who is going to talk or an organization that will.

In Washington the MLPA's are coming as well and we're doing the best we can to be prepared to preserve what we've got.

Z

Are we going to let this happen to us?

Sometimes you pick and choose your battles...

Do not sit on the fence on this one, and hope that others will bail us all out....

Thanks for that Zee...:you_rock:

Wear a black shirt, there will be a group of us, H&L anglers, Kayakers, and spearos will be wearing black shirts.

Thank you for coming up to support our RSG reps!

ANYONE ELSE?

C. Cary 05-19-2009 08:14 AM

I have previously replied that I will at the meeting tonight.

I plan to leave Kearny Mesa area at 4pm.

I live in Carmel Valley.

Anyone on the fence and need a ride? or wanting to car pool?

Best would be Kearny Mesa or North on the 805 or 5 corridor.

let me know.

I will be the chubby guy in the black shirt getting picked on by the tow-headed 9 year old, known as Clay!!

Why aren't more of you going to this meeting??????

tylerdurden 05-19-2009 08:21 AM

One more thing, try to get there as soon as possible. They may stop taking public comment cards at 6pm, meaning if you show up at 7pm you won't be able to speak. Also, if you don't respond when they call your name to speak, you miss out.

We should get there in plenty of time, so if you are worried, pm me and I'll give you my phone # and can fill out a card for you.

edit->

It would be easier if you just pm'd me your info
Name
address
phone#
email address

I am pretty sure that is all they wanted last time.

I'll stop checking my pms at about 12:30 today.

Matt 05-19-2009 11:42 AM

Tman and I are heading up around 230 and picking up Clay from school, so we should be up there fairly early. If you can't find the Kayak section please feel free to text or call me at 619.760.3792

zenspearo 05-19-2009 11:59 AM

Howdy fellow kayakers.

We have 26 spearos signed up to go to the meeting to speak out against closures.

http://spearboard.com/showthread.php?t=84279

I am hoping to have more kayak fishermen there so as to have another consumptive group outdo spearos (thus shaming even more spearos into showing up at future meetings).

We won't be caught off guard like what happened in Norcal.

By the way...a hearty thanks to everyone. It's going to be nice to be in a meeting room with a lot of friendlies... Black shirt everyone.

You guys rock!

As soon as my last rental comes in I am out the door.......hope to be there before 7PM

zenspearo 05-19-2009 09:15 PM

I hope I'm not stealing your thunder but you kayakers rock tonight. You did outstanding. Beyond highlighting the needs of kayak fishermen in general, you all did great with the focus on La Jolla, it's unique launching spot for kayaks, and the importance of keeping this area open for kayak fishing. All of this came through loud and clear.:luxhello:

From a San Diegan and a spearo--thank you.:you_rock:

P.S. You humbled us. I think there were more of you guys tonight--for the first time and I hope that will continue.
