I vote that if you want to be approved for the trip you have to take a trip with Josh (darkhorse) and he can sign you off if you keep up with him all day! ha ha WE PUT IN SOME MILES!!!

Yea I've seen a few guys sailing their PA's before but that's money I don't think will be put to good use for me at least might use it twice and then never see it again haha.
Well apparently if you aren't already part of the pre determined select group to do this trip then there is a lot of proving that you need to do. I feel bad for people who want to get into kayak fishing and visited this thread or current members that got excited about this trip and then realized how discouraging it became because nazis run it. What happened to the friendly message this thread started out with?

^Boo hoo. Maybe you could set up a long paddle with people you know are fit enough. Let me ask you these, seriously. Have you capsized in deep water, and righted your PA alone? How much open water experience do you have? Can you surf launch and land that thing? There will be one of each. What's in your safety gear?

In Cabo's defense, there was a time when putting up a post like this, one would know who the respondents are. Personally. Now there are many more kayak fishers in many more craft. He doesn't know you, but you seem gung ho. Ordinarily that would be dangerous. Too gung ho may be putting what's in your head before reality. He doesn't know if that's you.

All Cabo's saying is that this is a serious trip, through the shipping lanes, with sometimes unpredictable weather off Fermin. It's not a trip where after 8 hours you can just hit the beach for a rest --like other through paddles. You may still have 4 more hours bucking wind and current. His post was meant to be a stern reminder of these things, not that it is some exclusive trip. You're missing the point. If it was that exclusive it wouldn't be out on the forums, and you would just be reading a TR.

Gung ho? That's funny. As far as my comment about paddling around otay, endurance. Finyak as well as a few others know that I can handle myself in open ocean. No need for concern

You folks are acting as if the day that Cabo and his posse choose to go to Catalina would be the only day possible to do that. If you want to go, plan it , do it, give us a report. This whole dick measuring thing it's just a waste of energy.

I was just hoping to have a fun trip with some fellow kayakers to a place I've never been before. The minute someone else decided to plan a trip then there is an alternative option. Otherwise this is what I had wanted to do. HAD wanted to do

I do a bit of river paddling, and your paddle to Catalina is of interest, but with the aid of the river at about 2 miles an hour the 25 miles we do on the first day, generally takes about 5 hours - my average bay and Ocean is about 3.7 Miles per hour average.

Also do not forget to calculate your currents and the wind factor, on 48 mile paddle on the river that should have taken me 10 hours took 14 hours of hard paddling because of the head winds.

But the above worked out, I am interested in more details - Cost and how are we getting back, the Date and hour of launching.

Idk, with the responses written to those interested I'd find another group just so I didn't have to deal with the egos.

I've flipped my PA several dozen times. Some in 30ft+ water with 5-6ft swells but most while landing after running baits with it. I did a solo rescue to another kayaker that flipped his revo in a 5ft offshore swell, righted it, got him on and hoped back in my PA. I can say with all confidence, it's not hard at all.

I personally believe the Hobie Pro Angler is one of the best open water yaks out there. Stability, capacity and speed are all sufficient for a safe voyage across the channel. The only reason I ever flipped mine more than 100yards off the beach is because of my own stupidity and I knew the risks running baits into a tropical storm.

The best way to see if you are up to the crossing is to load all you fishing gear, beer, food, water, camp gear and see how much of a difference it's going to be paddling with the whole load. Weigh everything - look at the total and add your weight. It all adds up fast. What's the weight limit of your craft? Now go down to the beach, launch and fish all day. You will know your limits and your kayak limits fast.
