Now for help with Spanish;

At the border I am asked by non-English speaking officers (why do they have them there?) as "where are you going?".

Can you provide a simple answer like--I am going fishing for a week at Gonzaga Bay.

Thanks Amigo.

There's 2 main questions you will be asked at any checkpoint in mex....

A donde vas? (or a donde va usted) = where are you going?
Voy/Vamos a bahia gonzaga para pescar por una semana.

De donde vienes? (de donde viene usted) = where did you come from?
Somos (we are)/ venimos (we came) de ___________.

Mahigeer 10-15-2016 07:25 AM

Great.

How about;

I am with a group and going to Gonzaga Bay for a week of fishing.

I am coming back from Gonzaga Bay after a week of fishing and going to Mexicali.

If you try to say that they will think you know spanish and will reply with a more complicated question.

Stick to...

I came from _______
I go to _______

Sure, here you go. Try this:

Hola, yo soy un narcotraficante y tengo un monton de drogas y armas en la cajuela de mi carro.

rossman 10-15-2016 09:36 AM

Exactly! Less is more with these guys. I normally just point to where I came and say Bahia Asuncion and point the direction I am going and say Bahia Gonzaga. Becation? Si.

Jeff's group just got back, very few sierras, lots of bass, triggers. Big fish wereTWO roosters one 30 and one 35#. Cabrilla 10 and 12 pounds, snapper 12# and corvina 6-7 and 10 pounds. While Jeff said this was his worst fishing in BAJA everyone caught good fish and enjoyed the weather. Hopefully some of them will post. Tight Lines,

With friends like you, who needs enemies.

Thanks for a good chuckle.

I agree the less is better.

Gr8fuldude 10-15-2016 11:18 AM

I'm also in the camp of less is more. Because I can rattle off in spanish without a thick accent, they'll often come back at me with something I can't understand. But that helps grow my spanish and enriches the experience.

?De donde viene usted? Answer: California

?A donde va usted? A pescar en Gonzaga.

Anything beyond that may just lead to confusion, and possible offending the guy with the big gun. Whatever you do, under no circumstances should you ever use the word mother (madre) in Spanish to someone you don't know very well.

If you want to practice your Spanish, probably better to pick someone other than military personnel :D

makobob 10-15-2016 12:57 PM

10X less is better, be RESPECTFUL!!!!! How would YOU feel stuck out in the middle of no where for a couple years? AFTER it is done I usually offer a two liter soda and a thank you. Just because....

Mahigeer 10-16-2016 03:28 AM

All good advice. Thanks all.

I have in the past first tried to find out if they (at the border) speak English.

They did not in couple of occasions, and they asked where am I going? I had help by others and there was no problem.

Some of the soldiers did speak little English and no problemo there either.

As to respect to authority, I have always been and believe it is the right attitude.

With 15 people on the trip I think 3 people per night will be fine. Faster cook and faster cleanup.

Ok so right now:

Pukashell and Domesta Day 1

Makobob and hashem Day 3

Myself, mikescales and monstafish Day 4

The rest of you guys on the trip need to jump in here and partner up and pick a day to cook. Whether it be at the restaurant or at Bobs. There are 7 nights total. Some will leave earlier. There are only 7 people accounted for on a night right now. The other 8 need to pick a night to cook.

Mahigeer 10-16-2016 10:31 AM

Senior Bob,

Do you have heavy items to load to your truck for the trip?

If so, do you have someone to help you load your truck on Sunday before the trip?

Unfortunately I am too far to be able to help. Maybe some of the members here who are closer can help out.

Of course at the camp I will be glad to lend a hand if needed.

On the lighter side;
I picked up my Mexican fishing license for a one year duration for ready-----$10.00. I think I paid more last time.

Getting serious about packing on Monday.
I also picked up a new 30 cm wheeleez kayak cart from Randy of OEX on Saturday. Some Pesos and cash for the trip as well.
Furthermore, I have two kayak seats for sale if anybody interested. One brand new and one bought at OEX and used only few times. PM me for pictures and if you want me to bring them to Baja.

YakDout 10-16-2016 10:46 AM

Bob, I can gladly help you Sunday afternoon with any loading you may need help with. Im gonna be crashing at shanes house in Carlsbad so I will pass through vista Sunday and can stop and help. Let me know.

Sounds like you may have gotten the one day mexican fishing license. I believe its closer to $40 for a year.

makobob 10-16-2016 11:48 AM

Brandon, thank you for the offer, but not much packing for me. I pack ice chest in truck, just add ice and food. ALL camping stuff is already in Gonzaga so it is just clothing and food. Everything alse is now packed in truck. I am ready to go. Tight Lines

The two roosterfish were caught last week on a Shamano wax wing and a crock one was 30# and the other 35#+.

Temps days 80's and 90's, nights low 70's and high 60's YOU will need a sweater or jacket in the evenings. Winds expected still below 10 for the first couple days, LONG RANGE looks good for low winds for the duration. Please be prepared to FISH!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mahigeer 10-16-2016 04:53 PM

Bob, glad to hear that you are packing light.

The dates for the fishing license, show one year.

$10.00 maybe the shop's fee, and the 707 pesos maybe charged by Mexican F&G independently on my CC.

I have to wait for my CC statement.

Since my Spanish is not efficient yet. Up to now I did not want take a chance of ordering on line (like the shop does) by myself.

Next year I will try differently.
