Willqueedo motor
One good thing about no fish to be caught, is that out gives us plenty of time to do those upgrades on the yak that you put off. Well I've been sittin on this 40lb. Thrust motorguide tripling motor with the intent of modding it for my xfactor, and with alot of help from premo its finally done. http://i1225.photobucket.com/albums/...416_171214.jpg http://i1225.photobucket.com/albums/...416_171223.jpg
8 speed turn nob, 5 forward speeds, 3 reverse. http://i1225.photobucket.com/albums/...416_171252.jpg Rudder peg style foot stearing http://i1225.photobucket.com/albums/...416_172609.jpg http://i1225.photobucket.com/albums/...416_171239.jpgsorry for the crappy phone pics. Ill try to take better ones on the water this weekend |
Looks great just hope you got a nice battery for it
|
how much did it all cost, including the CF #'s?
|
cool
|
Motor was given to me by a friend. probably 30-40 bucks worth of hardware from home depot. Plug unit $17 online. Cf#'s? We dont need no stinking cf#'s. Im rocking this shit kayak ninja stealth mode.....unless you are oc sheriff, coastguard or lifeguard, in that case ill get them tomorrow.:) seriously though I've never heard of anyone actually getting questioned about thier motor on a yak. Most of it is bellow water, its silent and I don't plan to do doughnuts around harbor patrol, so I think I'll be safe from the law.
|
I was stopped by the harbor patrol to talk about an unrelated matter, he saw my motor and did not say a single word about it. If you are polite and smile, you'll be cool. Worst case scenerio (you are testing and planning on getting the numbers this week):D
|
My thoughts exactly. A little bit of politeness goes a long way. I cant wait to test this baby out. Im thinking 8 mph no problem.
|
Welcome to the darkside! :)
I took Matt's advice and skipped the CF(I blame him if I do eventually get in trouble ;) ). i've been stopped and not a word was mentioned about the motor...they checked my catch but that was it. I don't think you'll get 8, maybe 5-6 tops. I get up to 4mph in my F&D...but that's a slow hull with myself(235lbs) a 70lb trolling battery(you're going to need a big one) and all my gear. I estimated my rig at 350ish lbs(plus hull weight) when loaded. That didn't include 3-4 gallons of saltwater in the bait tank @ 8.8 lbs per gallon. I'm running a 35/36lb(I don't remember which) motor. If you can get 8 out of your 40lb I'll switch to a 40lb immediately....please let me know. |
Im looking forward to fishing with you guys sometime. it could be three motorized yaks doing burnouts around george while he flies a kite
|
i rigged my old x factor also it lasted about 4 hours ....it was nice leaving dana sucked comming back in just FYI..

I likes it!! I went a different route though...:D I have not been on the water yet, but let me tell you, I can't wait. I'll probably make it to salt creek from baby beach in about a half hour, vice, 1hr 45 min paddling. :(

Besides, who the hell wants to be nice to Sheriffs, DFG, and life guards so they will over look your numbers. All they get from me is a simple nod, and carry the F-on. |
Don't plan on 4 hours if continual use at least not at top speed. Getting to my destination and getting back mainly. I will be doing some trolling in low speed once the threshers are back in town. Ill give a report on speed, maneuverability, turn radius, battery life. Fyi my ff 12v lasts forever and I can get a full day gishing and have it be mostly charged still. It runs my motor for approximately 30 minutes. In the event I run out of juice I plan to do a relay on a switch to act as a backup if need be. As an added precaution I'm willing to tie a brass key to georges kite and wait for an electric storm to recharge my battery.

Looks clean. But, can you access to raise/tilt the motor on the water? If the battery should die or you hook some debris you could be talking a good bit of extra drag to paddle around.

What kind of battery you using? The battery box I have fits perfectly in the back. I gooped and screwed in the mounts....It should hold it steady. The difficult part was figuring out how I want to mount the fuse. |

Very nice, Will! Hope it works even better than planned. Where's the battery go?
Devildawg...does yours need any counter-weight for the motor on the other side so it doesn't lean or veer off? |

Looks great!!! We should get all the motorized yaks out at the same time and fish some place. I'd be interested to see all the different rigs and they work
|
The first ever kayak cup, invitational motorized kayak drag race! Just dont cross over eachothers trolling lines!
|
sounds good its like thoose bikers in the pub checking their rigs.
kayak hell's angels. |
Drag-yaking....Xgames here we come!
If that's the case I'm getting a bigger motor with a carbon fiber shaft and a race battery just big enough to get me down the "track". :) :cheers1: Edit...NM, this guys got me beat already. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGnnx...eature=related |
Looks nice!
Just don't be like the guy I saw at Irvine Lake with a motor on his kayak......he told me he was out getting some cardio as he motored off......and he seemed serious:D |
Looks good, Your turning that thing into a battleship. Next modification should be a forward mounted harpoon gun.
Let me know when those T-sharks make a showing. I'm itching for some grilled thresher. :cheers1: |
Hell yeah matt! Thanks to you I finally have a yak that can support all of my macgyver needs. Threshers will show up when the water is between 59-62°. I'm guessing another month. Things are starting late this year. Will you be joining me in the catching of said shark?:-) I only take one per season the rest are cpr.

I'm certainly game for the first inaugural motorized kayak drag-race/fishing tournament. I wonder....if you enter a kayak tournament, and use you motor, would you fall under the auspice of a kayak or boat? |

What's the status on this, test run yet? I'm curious as to how fast you go with that motor...

Sounds good, keep us updated. I'm thinking about a motor upgrade, I have a need for speed and this 4mph(fully loaded) isn't cutting it. As I have learned you're going to need enough speed to get away from your friends as they're going to do everything they can to hook onto you and let you drag them too. This weekend I was in the big bay dragging a Stealth 14 + an X-Factor + a Hobie Outback and myself from the Shelter Island launch to the bait barge...at a steady 2 mph. I need some breakaway speed ASAP! HAHAHAHA I need to be able to holeshot that damned Hobie so he can't slow me down and let the others catch up...YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE! ;) |
I recently had OEX bassyak my stealth 12. I don't think you'll ever get more than 4-5 mph because that is about the max hull speed since your not getting up on plane. I use an optima blue top 34m and get aboutb5 hours of run time. The battery weighs nearly 50 pounds which sucks. I have seen a lipo 12 v rechargeable from smart battery that would give almost equivalent run times and only weighs 18 pounds. The drawback is price; $650.00. Your boat looks great and much cheaper than a bassyak! If you want to see how the motor lift kit works on mine, let me know.

Lipo Battery?
Ddwineguy...what is a Lipo 12V Battery? Do you mean Lithium?
I have a Ocean Kayak Torque and that battery is damn heavy. I really like the advantages of the electric Min-Kota motor on the yak, but, I'd love to find a good deal on a lithium ion battery. I saw the battery for the Hobie electric Yak and it's pretty pricy...but Very Light and 28 volts also. Jim / Saba Slayer |
Lithium-ion polymer. Without a lipo cutoff you drain that battery too low and it will pop. Not good in a Plastic kayak.. Lipo fires suck.. Lost a 1K rc truggy that way.
|
13 lbs
Wow...13 pounds for a 12 volt 40ah lithium battery sounds great!...but...$700, that's a little steep.
Jim/ Saba Slayer |
Saba slayer. Lipo is short for lithium polymer. Think AGM. The lithium is in cased in a polymer. Makes for a safer battery, less likely to burst in to flames. The new LIPO batteries have built in protections so are now considered non hazardous(won't catch fire and melt your yak). Check out these websites. Www.Lithiomion-batteries.com or Www.lithionicsbattery.com.

Yea
Yea...I got it..."sdfishma Lithium-ion polymer. Without a lipo cutoff you drain that battery too low and it will pop. Not good in a Plastic kayak.. Lipo fires suck.. Lost a 1K rc truggy that way."
Thanks...Now find me a great price! Is there anyone on this board using it in a kayak? Jim / Saba Slayer |
