First time out of LJ
Hey my name is mike. I'm new to kayaking and fishing. I'm going to try fishing La Jolla Wednesday morning. I've been out of dana point once and newport once. Any tips or pointers?
|
ya , wait for me
:D . i should be at launch around sun up . surf is looking proper now and should be good tomorrow morning , but is projected to pick up late in the afternoon . if you are interested in fishing together pm me . i can definitely show you where everyone caught fish last tues . do the opposite of me , and you should be good to go . :cheers1: . i am gonna try and stop off at jorge's and grab a bottle of the skunk off . summer is over , so let's see if we can turn a new leaf for fall .
|
I'll be in La Jolla tomorrow as well. Hit me up on the radio. What's the official BWE Kayak Channel?
Also, how has the sand in La Jolla been lately? |
sand at entrance is as bad as it gets .
i was there last week , i have a f250 with 4x4 .oddly enough it struggles more than these pickups that come from the rental shop to drop off yaks . might have something to do with the gvwr of 10000 lbs ? i left a trench at least 1.5' -2-5 ' deep .

I'll be at LJ before sunup. White Volkswagen Golf, olive 2013 outback. See you all there.

Linglifter and myself plan on launching around 530. See you guys out there!

I would suggest, instead of jumping into open water your 3rd time ever on the kayak...you should probably stick to the bays for awhile...I doubt your 100% comfortable on your kayak...and know what to do if something goes wrong just your 3rd time out...build up your endurance, it's a long paddle and if your not ready for it you could be in the shits.... I say slow down a little, learn your kayak and how it paddles. Get in and out several times, have a plan just incase something bad happens. You don't want to get caught out there not knowing how to save yourself. Don't count on anybody saving you either, because somebody might not always be there or within reach or screaming distance. |

I understood it as 3rd in open water, not necessarily 3rd time on yak.
Good luck out there! |
And this link below may help to gauge launch conditions.
http://www.larryl.com/favorite_kayak_conditions.htm SE breeze this morning was likely blocked by La Jolla making for a smooth launch with pretty small surf. BTW, I would NOT recommend a launch Thursday morning (9/26) as it will be 'washing machine' conditions. Larry |
^It wasn't exactly glassy inside, but not bad either. By 10 or so the southeast wind was blowing snot outside. Surf intermittently thumpy and seeming to rise. Definitely doable for anyone with timing.
No fish for me. :( |
shet day
20 mph + . i took vacation for this  . nice meeting up with you guys , maybe next time we will get em . i think the surf is gonna pick back up in the next couple days . on the positive note , i did break the skunk . i scratched out one greenie .

Wind certainly sucked. Making bait was easy and metered fish but none of them were biting.

So first beach launch and landing went well. It definitely will get interesting when it gets bigger than ankle to knee high. I launched at 5 and I'm not going to lie I was a bit sketched out not being able to see more than 10 feet and being in that much water. Chris helped me out huge by letting me follow him out a ways. Fishing was fantastic, but I was able to getting a few healthy mackeral and a halibut that was the size of my hand. I had to call it an early day because of work so I started the paddle back to shore at 9. The wind was starting to come up. Overall, it was a awesome day and definitely way better than newport and dana point. It was my third time fishing without a deck hand and my third time in a kayak. The paddle wasn't too bad and will only help me build muscle for surfing this winter.

Nice report. Glad it went well for you. Btw.... The Halibut the size of your hand most likely was a Sand Dab. There's a ton of them in LJ.

last week
i had trouble catching greenies with sibiki . i was able to catch sardines and spanish , this was in the midst of a wide open bite . i should have dumped the spanish macs and headed to 95 ' of water with the few "dines" that i had . i have never really fished sardines in Lj , but needless to say these are great baits . this week i switched back to a pre made double hook setup tipped with squid , which wasn't working for me either .so i started to head offshore with the one greenback that i had , but after 45 min. of paddling , decided to try and tie off , hoping that the winds would die down . remarkably i was able to stay stationary with only two strand of kelp . i did this for 45 minutes to no avail . i tried to head off shore again , but was quickly fatigued and headed back in . the paddle back in seemed to take longer than normal , maybe i was out of gas from the start . swells were pretty big , combined with the wind i almost felt like i was about to flip on the PA , had i done something stupid . coming back in , the water definitely had more power , but so far i have been lucky on the pro angler and have not gotten destroyed . this might have been a better day for a outback . hope to see you guys on the water soon . take care .
