LJ Tuesday
I mixed a little work and fishing yesterday. Ran 2 errands along the way and still managed to launch about 6:30am. On the way back north stopped by Hobie and picked up a customers kayak :D. AndyACE was off work and carpooled the 90+ miles down the freeway. One footers at 5 seconds will keep your face dry but not your trunks. Glad I brought a fleece as that gray morning stuff and a breeze being wet gets me cold. Seeing all the good stuff that has been happening close to the bottom, I planned to fish one high and one low. Bait was tough and I managed 4 greenbacks and surprisingly no spanish. Rigging up to drop one down and found I was lacking in lead over 2 oz, so went ahead with just a flyline, until Andy convinced me to drop down and gave me a 5 oz torpedo.
Lots of sleigh rides from the right and the wrong kind. http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegall...0/IMG_3613.JPG Fish tapped on the bait and loaded up and swung. Alive, heavy and just stuck to the bottom. Fish never took any line and did not even toss it's head much. Made me nervous that it had all the fight left in it. Straight up and down, I pedaled forward to lay it out. Stuck it in the right spot, but the gaff only went in and not out, that worried me while I put it on the clip. Andy came over with a heavy stringer for back up. Pulled a gill and blood flowed and finally the fish thrashed a while boat side. I pulled him up and thumped him several times and let him thrash again. Game over. 32# and a Romeo Y Julieta Reserve to celebrate. http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegall.../photo_67_.JPG http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegall...0/IMG_3625.JPG |
Good Story! Great Picture!

Nice Flatty and good OTW shot as well!

Ice returns to LJ
Ah Andrew - surprise greeting in the dark of "Howdy Mr. Swingin' Fish" helped start my day well (I'm thinkin', "Who the heck's been fishing here long enough to know that handle?"). Is good "blasts from the past" still frequent LJ - with LJ still giving reason to be there. While my kayak wasn't overweight upon return, it was still good snapping shots of "the Andy's" with their just rewards. Yep, good bait a challenge to acquire, and bottom rigs seemed the ticket. Glad for all timely reports - especially yours (May they become "de rigueur" once again).

Great lj barndoor. Going to have to give the high low a try next time. 3 way swivel or dropper?
|
I have broke off way too many fish tying dropper loops, always use a 3 way swivel now.
|
Good fishing with ya Andy! Nice hali to get to heart racing at gaff. Good thing it never exploded at the wrong time.
I was fooled a couple times by sharks, until one of them turned into a nice 30lb WSB. Lots of life out there. Nice meeting you Avery! |
Alright folks which one looks bigger ? :D
Thanks for the assist Andy! http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegall...0/IMG_3632.JPG |
Halibut by 2 lbs.!
|
I say the TUNA!
|
Nice fish guys, remember seeing you guys troll past me with that WSB sticking out the back.
All I caught was a small yellowtail that was released unharmed which fulfilled my goal of releasing a yellowtail this year. |
Nice work Andy!

I tried the one high and one low but did not have the luck you guys had. I was not able to find any greenies until later in the day and lost like 8 spanish to the lazy ass knuckleheads. One knucklehead took both snagged the fly-lined then found my other line and followed it to the bottom. I stopped using bait and even had one take my Tady 45 mackerel pattern for a ride before finally letting go like 20 seconds later, crazy. I did see for the first time at La Jolla a Sea Turtle, that was awesome. Great OTW pictures and the comparison at the launch. Hope to see you out at La Jolla again Andy, Mark.

nice shot of the turtle Mark, they are camera shy! This guy wanted to dive deep a few weeks ago.

Very nice :luxhello:

nice outing. great OTW shot.

Great underwater video. Chris (ctfphoto) asked me if I had seen it and about where it was. When I finally spotted it in the swells, I paddled over but it kept swimming underwater and I did not want to scare it. I took some video but it was harder to see and the reflection of the water made it harder. I kept paddling and timed it to coast up to it when it came up for air so as not to make a lot of paddling noise. That was the best picture where it has it's head furthest out of water before going back under.

WTG! Nice fish for both of you.

Ya the turtle was awesome, 2nd time I have seen one in La Jolla.
This (iPhone) photo has convinced me that I need to start bringing out my real photo equipment while fishing as you see so much awesome wildlife out there. |
That shot is killer! :luxhello:
|
WTG on the double 30's. How'd you get the turtle to pose? The one I saw wanted to play hide and seek.
|
