When I was still figuring it out, I tried to launch my tandem with my buddy at Hospitals because "the kelp was really close" and we were going spearfishing. Paddled into some five foot barrels over the reef and fully pitchpoled. My buddy was sitting up front and he flew right over my head by about six feet. We lost some carbon fins, two masks, two snorkels, and about $80 worth of lead weights.

Another time, I tried to take my wife kayak diving when it was heavy, and she almost killed me for yelling "just paddle harder" right before we rolled the boat. That was the most dangerous thing I've ever done, at least as far as my dignity and healthy relationship are concerned, and why we call it the divorce boat to this very day.

Been in a dinghy with lighting bolts touching down one time. That sucked.

Dannowar 06-20-2016 01:31 PM

Closed out 12 foot solid witches rock in Costa Rica. Multiple wave hold downs. Maxed out sets breaking in 5 feet of water. Rip current saved my life.

Never kayak fishing. That's like dying while golfing.

Here's my most recent "moment"...

I'm standing up on my truck tailgate, weighing out my latest fish which is almost at long as I am tall...the game clip slips out of its hold, just about impaling my heart...but instead slides down my chest...(yes, I'm completely naked)...:the_finger:

See game clip below...wondering if it's defective. Please help.

1. 1995, going camping my jr year, driving to Jalama to surf, crossed a bridge on the windy road, old truck, lost control, hanging off a cliff with the rear end and back tires on the dirt berm. Got out of the truck, and it rolled down 150' cliff.
1 min of total fear.

2. 2013 mountaineering a 14k+ peak in the Easter Serria called Middle Palisade and my partner dislodged a 2'x2'x2' rock down the couloir where I was 75 yards below. I traversed the class 4 ledge and dodged the pieces that were traveling about 100mph+, missed me by 5'.
3 seconds of total fear.

3. 2015 almost went down at the Anacapa Arch in the Channel Islands on a 35' boat. Bad weather, report was wrong, rolled to 40 degrees and lost a motor and could not steer. Go bag, wetsuits and kayaks were out and ready to bail. It was just as bad that night, anchor pulled on the night shift. It was terrible.
1.5 days of chaos.

jorluivil 06-21-2016 06:16 AM

Woke up this morning, bedroom was dark, tripped over the f-en dog.......almost died.

I almost died the day that you got picked up by The Shrimp Boat in La Jolla! The lifeguard was towing people back, I refused then it took me almost 3 hours to paddle back to shore. Had to stop a couple times to dump all the water out of my kayak. Literally came close to sinking that day. It's days like that, that makes me consider switching to the dark side.Attachment 19464

When is this going to become a sticky?

Deamon 06-21-2016 04:55 PM

You can't request a sticky on your own thread...that's like looking at yourself in the mirror and tossing two thumbs up...

makobob 06-21-2016 07:25 PM

When they took my toe and told me I cound not have it back to use for fish bait they broke my heart. But that's a different story.

PapaDave 06-22-2016 06:31 AM

4 years ago, internal bleeding, lost six units of blood, which had to be pumped out of my stomach. Unknown cause.

On the bright side, I did get to ride in an ambulance whizzing down the freeway with the siren and lights going.

addicted2sp33d 06-22-2016 07:17 AM

I may have you guys beat... maybe I'm disqualified from this thread because I didn't just ALMOST die... I actually DID die; drowned actually, ironically during a swim class when I was in elementary school.

Of course I remember none of this, but according to witnesses, and what my mom tells me, I was turning blue and unresponsive, possibly no pulse, and the lifeguard literally brought me back to life.

When I was around 16, me and my friend went out at the wedge in Newport. It was about 10-12 ft which we could handle but didn't know it was a mega building swell.
Soon turned to 15 feet, 20 feet, 25 feet plus. (Barely) paddling over those things I have never felt so insignificant in my life. Took about an hr of that before we could finally make it in without getting slammed by a 25 footer. An unforgettable day. When we saw pros we admired in magazines dropping in on 25 foot plus waves right next to us, we knew we were in over our heads, literally.

But I'll never forget what it looks and feels like looking down the face of a 25 foot wave at the wedge as I barely made it over the top :)

Josh, I read your post with out seeing who it was. 1/2 way thru I guessed it was you.

I took a massive wipe out surfing the north jetty of Humboldt Bay. Broke my leash. Swam in thru huge walls of white water. Got to the sand in sprinted down the beach, out the jetty, and dove in to get my board that was getting pull out to sea in the rip that runs out along the jetty. Swam hard, got the board, n rode a massive wave in at about sun set. Damn I was stupid.

About 7 years ago me and a friend were fishing north of Scripps before the MLPA A**holes closed it to fishing. I had no fish finder back then and was probably still using a Walmart rod.

I see this other guy hook a thresher, which broke off. So he tells me don't worry they have teeth and will probably cut your line.

Next five minutes I hook one, Get it to the boat pretty fast, fish is still green. Thresher jumps over my kayak. I mean he jumps over my knees, clears the kayak lands on the other side. All I saw was a grey blur whizzing by my face. I managed to get him to the boat on my terms cause I wanted a photo of this killer. I couldn't get him out of the water for the photo cause he was too heavy. would of probably bled out from internal injuires if he hit me.

One reason I will never target sharks!

FISH11 06-22-2016 08:23 PM

Sharon that is quite a story, but the picture is AWESOME. Congrats in winning the battle.

Took an old girlfriend to my secret retreat in Idyllwild last week. She got up at 4am to go to the bathroom and tumbled down the stairs. Broke her right arm with multiple fractures and dislodged a bone from her wrist joint. Damn.

Could have been me. That's my casting arm.

tomahawk 06-25-2016 08:52 AM

i'll play. I got 2.
1. Passed out at work. Few weeks later doc runs tilt table test. heart stop for 5 seconds before rebooting. Vagus nerve issue.
2. At 16, friend shot me with an unloaded 357. Through arm, through chest, into wall. Spleen exploded, kidney damaged, lung collapsed. Exit would in back is an inch from spine. missed the artery in my upper arm by 1/2 inch. Four or five days before they were sure I was going to live. I almost died. 5 weeks later ran a mile with the arm still in the cast. I almost died. 3 weeks after that played in the first football game of my senior year. I almost died.

You may stand a pretty good chance at dying while I'm on the golf course. Haha. Cruising Costa in 2 weeks to surf, hopefully looking to get into some jacks while down there as well.

FISH11 06-25-2016 10:57 AM

So far in my life I've had a handful of instances were I should have died given the circumstances. None close enough while kayak fishing and hope that stays that way. Several were in car accidents others just part of life. I look at it this way "Only the good die young". So I must be a real Bastard, I know sometimes I've been called that. Though as far as I recall it was always by women, OH WELL!
