skunk alley

Was trolling around a school of macks and positioned myself just to the outside of the school and hooked up. Beginners luck strikes again. My brother was on a kayak for the first time and fishing lj for the first time and hooked up! then he proceeded to tighten the drag to maximum and snapped 30lb flouru leader at my uni to uni knot. I was sooo bummed he missed that fish but very excited to see him soooo amped and trying to fight the fish off the side of the yak was pretty entertaining. So did I tie the uni to uni knot wrong if it snapped at my spectra???
I use a swivel in between, not sure.
Nice fish. Tonights dinner?
good job:you_rock:
Did you tie a uni to uni between spectra and a fluro leader ?
Most people use a swivel between spectra and mono, or spectra and fluro to make the connection. San Diego Knots on either side. or an albright knot... usually used for a top shot. The swivel is the quick and easy way. |
NIce! congrats on the YT:)
yeah it was straight line to line via uni knot. ill try the swivel for sure.
There are some really small premium swivels that will easily fit through your rod guides making it possible to have a fairly long leader and still cast. These swivels are rated at about 80# test.
They are much stronger and perform better than the cheap swivels normally found in the big sporting good stores. Most specialty tackle shops carry this kind of swivel. Bob |
nice fish!!!! :luxhello: tell your brother you cant allow him to catch a fish bigger than you ;)
Hey Patrick. I prefer a swivel as I don't have much confidence in my line to line knots. However, in your brother's case I don't think it would have made any difference. If my line is going to fail anywhere its going to be the floro knot at the swivel. With the load of an angry yellow, no stretch spectra and maxed out drags, something has to give. Was he using your Newell?
Patrick, that's a nice one; stop #$@%^}-&*(#+?)=1 and go eat your catch before it goes...:)
Gonna cook for the boys at the office today. And he was using my sealine. I have some of those premium swivels in the garage so im gonna throw it on tomorrow.
I go albright, never had a problem...
I use a uni to uni all the time and never have an issue.
Catching fish and bronzin' at the same time. Gotta love it! :cheers1:
I use a tona peqa knot....it take a bit of practice, but don't need a swivel....
Here's a link....nice fish :you_rock: http://www.sportfishingmag.com/techn...not-21967.html |
One of those beautiful days you can't let pass you by.

When tied, lubed and tightened properly, the Uni to Uni knot should be at least as strong as the line is (if the 2 lines are not drastically different in diameter). It could be that the weakest part of the line was just after the knot, but the odds are against it. What pound spectra are you using, and what knot did you use on the other end of the Fluro? I prefer #50 or higher spectra when I tie to #25 or higher Fluro. Those fishing knot tying videos and knot strength rating sites on the net have saved me a lot of headaches in the last year or so.

I have always used the uni to uni and that is where it should break if it is gonna. |
65 lb-ish spectra to 25 lb flouro I think i said I had 30 on there. I tied uni on both sides and I was curious why it didnt break closer to the hook. But I used a san diego knot at the hook. Anytime you tighten the drag all the way down something is gonna give. And I guess its logical for the spectra to break the flouro at the knot as it sinches down and abraids the line. Im just new to all this stuff.
nice one. glad you got one. that was a killer morning. almost like summer!
Have you tried this knot?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNAzz...layer_embedded 50 or 65lbs braided tied to 3 foot of 30 or 40lbs fluoro. |
the bro... knot
Hey Farrier, congrats!
I think it was your bro and not the knot.... Uni to Uni is supposed to work with flouro and braid. So is the Albright, etc... Setting the drag too tight or as you said all the way takes the "give" out of the system... Also, every pull or headshake just multiplies the tension on the line. I use a swivel mainly cause when I didnt, the line got twisted with use.... Definately use the good stuff from a specialty shop... :reel:cowboybill |
I was wrong, the Double Uni is not as strong as the line itself. Looks like it is only about 85-90% of the line strength. The San Diego Jam Knot is stronger (like 90-95%) so it broke in the right spot, just like Andy said.
keep it simple swivel NEVER did me wrong either. nice yellow btw!
I fish Spectra to Mono or Flouro on all my lines and always join them using the Albright Special. I've caught 100lb Makos, 30lb Dodos and Tuna in the 40lb class......its never failed.

Am I the only one that thinks Cowboybill's Avatar looks like the inspiration for the Moyer tshirt?
