Where was all the thrashing and heavy breathing and wild gaff swings?!? Yeah, you look a little too calm out there, but I havent caught a legal halibut in well over a year, so what do I know  New(ish) boat looks sexy! |
Congrats, nice catch. :cheers1: Very smooth indeed.

Sweet! Liked the vid and nice butt!
Hey how did you attach your gopro? I like the setup... I might have to get mine back into commission and try something similar. |

I used a piece of 1 1/4" PVC pipe that I belt sanded down to fit in one of my flushmounts just behind my seat. Then I heated the PVC and bent it so that I could get the camera just where I wanted it. I used a 1 1/4" Sleeve at the top with a reducer 1 1/4" - 1" and then an end cap that has a flat end to stick my camera mount to. http://i650.photobucket.com/albums/u...w/PA190395.jpg http://i650.photobucket.com/albums/u...w/PA190396.jpg Then I used 2 pivots, from the camera hardware, between the camera and the mount to allow me to tilt it two ways. http://i650.photobucket.com/albums/u...w/PA190398.jpg I have not bothered to glue any of it cause it friction fits so well. |
Very Nice !, Everything, Kayak, gaff, butt, video...Congrats Greg. :notworthy:
|
Smooth indeed...only thing missing is where you say,
"This $hit is too easy..." Nice vid |
Well Done Greg! Cool video. Good Fishin ! :cheers1:
|
Thanks for the info on the cam mount Greg... Nicely done and clean. I will give it a go!
|
NICE!!! :cheers1:
Calm as a lamb he was! Nice GoPro setup. Greg I think that's as complete of a sub as they come. I don't think we'll hear Jasmin complaining "hey where's the pic".. :D He's back, watch out. His back hurts he hasn't neen on a kayak. He's gettin' old :D |

My first setup for the GoPro had my fat head filling half the screen lol. That reminds me, I did not mention that mine was on dead Squid (not really, live Lizzard fish). |
You make it look so easy! Are you sure that butt wasn't drugged?

Pond Butts
Greg, Are all of your submittals bottom feeders? You need to change your screen name to HaliKing. That was the smoothest gaffing and landing I have ever seen. You did not even get slimmed. I am not sure your calm holding over the side technique would work for Yellowtail or WSB that seem to protest a bit more to being stuck with a gaff.
I don't seem to have the patience for Hali fishing. No Hali slim on my ride. I am not too big on eating bottom dwellers from our polluted local bays. Give me the open water and Pelagics. The anticipation of the surf launch and landing also adds to the attraction for me. If I want to complete for a top spot next year I guess I might need to learn some patience and maybe a catch a release over the side technique. I am not sure if I could get a measurement without getting slimmed. Maybe, a wooden yardstick would work? Getting a weight without ruining the slim and putting a hole in the mouth might be tough. Net landing and weighing the netted fish could work. The yak cam is a great tool that could make release submittals viable. Thanks for the Hali:you_rock: landing lesson. |
Kurt, larger Halibut are Pelagics. Some venture out as far as the continental shelf in summer and winter and spawn in both spring and fall in the shallows. Just like WSB they build up their size and endurance in the bays before they venture out into the open water. You don't need to bay fish for them either. LJ is one of the best places around for catching monster versions of them. Just ask most of the Moyer tourney winners. If I could afford the time and money, that is where I would be every weekend. I keep a stick on ruler applied to my paddle and a plastic lip gripper for any fish I am not sure about. Unless fishing a tournament, I try to release everything under 30". I will have to post one of the gripper videos to show how "smooth" I can be .
|
You may have just put some bad juju on your self with that how smooth I can be comment.:) You may just gaff yourself in the leg like someone else on here. I won't use any names
|
oh, believe me, it was said with all the sarcasm I could muster. It takes me a minimum of 3 tries to get that damn thing in their mouth and hold.
|
Minor upgrade. I was hoping for a little more with almost an extra 3 inches in length, but not quite the girth. 33 inches and 13.9 pounds caught on Sardine.

LOL Adi. That was several thousand hours of video ago it seems. Kurtfish's "Pond Butt" post was classic.
