Opinion: Malone Microsport Kayak trailer

So my dad is turning 65 this year and I think it’s time he stops trying to load a 60-70# kayak onto the roof of his car. Trying to see if anyone owns one of these and if you do what do you think about them? Pros vs Cons.

Thanks

Thanks Andy. Would you say it’s worth the price? Say compared to another kayak specific trailer that’s half the price? If you have any at the shop I’d love to come check them out.

I currently do not have one here, just been ordering as needed. Some cool options, like retractable tongue and I always order the extended 78 inch load bars.

They also have the Extra Light for $999

Get the retractable tongue so that you can fit it in a garage with the kayak loaded. I ditched the load bars that came with it and added parallel pvc pipes for holding the PA14, and an upper story/frame for a second kayak like an Outback. I’ll find pics if you’re interested.

I really wanted one, but some issues stopped me.

Storage space at my house.

Finding double parking space for the vehicle and the trailer. Especially on weekends.

Driving on freeways and off-roads.

Not sure if car insurance would increase.

Not sure if it must be registered.

Just a heads up and not trying to keep you from buying one.

yes...

Get Dad a trailer...I love my trailer for my PA...if you have the room to store it with the kayak on top and ready to go...it's a "no-brainer"...
So easy to load and launch....go for the bigger wheels...no 12" HarborFreight junk... Either a used single jet ski trailer or a Malone...
Andy will set you up with a good trailer :luxhello:

Thanks for the info guys. Now let’s see if I can locate a second hand one 🤔

I like my Malone trailer but as for the cons of a trailer, any trailer, I’m really stressed out about parking. I can generally find double-length street parking at LJ at 5am on a weekend, but if you arrive after 6am you can forget it. This alone is giving me thoughts of switching from SUV to truck.

I bought a used jetski trailer for my PA and really like having the gear box mounted on it. Can keep most of the gear - seat, drive, extra junk - in there so it is ready to go and locked up. Yeah, it is a bummer to be limited to lower speeds, but my back thanks me when I don't have to load that beast up on top of my SUV.

Home Depot makes a similar trailer you bolt together for cheap. You can always buy the extended tongue that folds and add..

Here is a picture of the trailer from back in the day..

Only reason I’m looking at the Malone bc it looks light and easily maneuverable.

I've been eyeing this one...
