Open Call - MDR Reef Sunday 12/31

I'm planning on heading to the MDR reef tomorrow (Sunday) and if the weather is as good as its been the last few days, I may head over to the Santa Monica break wall (sunken) afterwards to chase some Cali's. I plan to be on the water at dawn and headed out towards the Marina at safe light.

I tried to get squid at the market and they were out. So unless I get a few macs to chase my jerk-bait, the only baits I'll be throwing will be plastics and jigs. I have some cash on me if anyone can spare some squiddies...:adore:

Safety in numbers, so feel free to tag along if you're interested.

Kenny

Ended up on the water before dawn and got stuck in the Marina while waiting for the fog to break. And man, oh man, that fog isn't anything to mess with. It didn't break around me until around 11 am, and by that time I was so frustrated I was ready to head back in. I never got farther than the outside of the breakwall, and I was off the water around noon.

Caught one really good Spottie in the dark, and didn't have another fish until the end of the day (juvie Calico on a rip bait while looking for Macs.)

Happy New Year everyone!

These days I am too busy getting ready for an ice fishing trip.

However, in the future given advance notice, I would like to join you.

Fishing by the live bait barge (fisherman's wharf) could be productive.

Always happy to meet new faces and have some company on the water.

These days for me its a lot less planning, and a lot more "Oh I have a free day, I'm going fishing" which is really unfortunate come days like this weekend when the fog is locked in.

Which bait barge are you referring to? The one in the Marina?

Bummer the fog was so thick. At least you got out. Reiner and I fished the reefs on a Friday a couple weeks ago and did well. He did a lot better than me although I would say my fish were bigger. Ha ha. I was fishing artificials and he was using squid and shrimp on the double dropper loop. By the way, there was heaps of bait out there. We even saw a whale.
Cheers, Steve

Good to hear there was some activity out there. I was prepared too, as I was loaded with 2oz leadheads, vertical jigs, and even some shrimp. Regardless of the weather, I was >< close a few times to talking myself into heading out, but I just couldn't talk myself into it as I was alone and confident my battery was low on life. Safety first.

Funny, I totally forgot I was dragging a dropper the whole day with some shrimp on it, and didn't get a bite the whole freaking day. What a waste of $6 Vons shrimp (which were great market quality before they sat on my boat all day.... LOL)

Nice

I actually managed to talk my self out of it, I went out Saturday hoping to launch from Redondo, arrived at 630 and the fog was just too dense waiting up until 800 and it just wouldn't clear up so loaded up the yak and headed home :-(

There is (maybe no more) a live bait pen at the village marina.

On weekdays you can fish there for a price and all of live bait you can use.

On Weekends, due to boaters coming in to get live bait, you have to fish from the side. Not too good.

Not sure what they charge now. it has been a long time since I got bait there.

Where did you launch from? I'll probably join you one of these next trips.

Pretty much my story, but I've had success along the breakwall and the visibility was JUST good enough to feel comfortable sticking close to that. Bite was off though so there wasn't any action.

Oh, duh. I know what you're talking about. Yeah, I've paddled around that and looked for some bass with mixed results. I will say there are some tank Spots hanging around the Village. The bigger the slip/dock, the bigger the fish if you can find 'em.

I almost always launch from the public boat ramp. Unless I'm down for an even longer paddle, and then I launch from Mothers Beach.

I talk to guys every once in a while when I paddle by, and I've never heard of a good bite there. Macs, and maybe an occasional 'Cuda and thats it. I think the Seals and other life in the Marina (dolphin) are keen on the area and that keeps the game fish away...

When there was fishing platform at the Burton Chase park, I used to fish it.

While waiting for free concert to start at the park, I would be casting lures.

Never caught anything due to boat traffic.

Sometimes bait would get a small shark for others.
