Unfavourable conditions in la Jolla Thursday 9/7/17 report

Wind and swell out of the northwest water temperature 71° only saw 4 kayaks at the launch. The saga of my mystery water leak continue, in my cobra fish and dive. After going to fiesta island with a 5 gal bucket and filling my kayak completely full of water I find no leaks and decided it must be leaking from the top. The only place I thought it might leak is the transducer wire, so I plug it with marine goop, thinking I fixed my leak. The last few trips I had to bail out water 3 times 1 on the beach.
So I launch in the dark and paddle out only one guy in front of me, took 4 waves that flooded my deck and in that big cobra you don't move...anyway until the water drains through the scupper hole, I made it out wet.Opened my hatch to get set up and no water inside my kayak.
Made bait two big mackerel and a smaller one. I pinned the smaller mackerel on the flyline thinking I would go shallow for some ghost hunting with only one bait on...it was a bumpy ride.No takers shallow so I head out around the corner not liking the conditions.
White rollers down the wall.

So I headed west

I wasn't long before my clicker went off.Either I'm getting older or the yellowtail are fighting harder. This fish felt like my toughest yt battle from a kayak and this is not my biggest yt? From a yak .Anyway I finally bring the fish to gaff,I open my hatch and have 3inchs of water inside. I gut the fish out in gray light thinking another hammerhead going to bump me.but it doesn't happen I put the fish in side my kayak and start bailing out 3ins of water. Not feeling comfortable I start to paddle in riding some down swell with weight in my bow I'm thinking do I want to try for a double. I'll paddle in around to calmer water and decide. With the water leak I decided to play it safe and head in. I release the other two big mackerel, bail out the water again and store all my gear thinking there's a chance I might flip. I come into the launch padding in backwards for a smooth landing...back by 9am and playing it safe.

I never go farther than i have to, to get bit ,on the corner where you start to see pt loma thats when the current starts pulling you south.Yellow tail swim all over the place. Put a mackerel on the fly line and pull it around you'll get bit got to put the time in. It's all about time on the water.

Nice one

Just curious, do you always gut the fish? I have been just bleeding the yt and throwing them on ice immediately.

MITCHELL 09-07-2017 02:50 PM

Pretty much

When I get home I put the head in the freezer for lobster bait and throw the skeleton on the bbq no stinky trash smoke the belly and collar

Congrats Mitchell! Nicely done. Conditions have been messed up on most days even when the forecast says 8 mph wind at 6 am and when you are there launching and you know the wind is at least 15 mph and only going to get worse.

About the leak

Mitchell - Are you only getting the water when the waves are breaking? Little to no water on flat lakes or inside the harbor? If so - it is likely the hatches. I had the same issue w/my Cobra Tourer. The Cobra hull is thinner than some others, but the hatches are more rigid. The flexing of the hull when the hatches don't allow gaps between them. Plus it can leak from the bolt holes for the hatch locks. One way to check - put a little water in the hull at home, then soapy water around the sealed hatches and locks. Remove the drain plug in the bow and blow in compressed air. You will see bubbles from hatches that leak or water coming out of the hull if the there is a leak.

It you discover any of these, feel free to shoot me a PM and I might be able to provide you w/some ideas for repairs.

I can't believe how much water was inside......
I bought some goop at home depot it doesn't say marine goop I guess I'll put a light coat on all the eyelets and rivets can't do anything about the hatch seal unless they sell another one I probably should have just put silicon sealer it stays soft and you can redo it goop is more like glue,it get hard .
At least there's no crack to weld.

It works great, i use it all the time. I even mounted my transducer( electrical conduit ) to the inside of my hull with it and it sold as a rock and holds water all day with no leaking!
