Dang it! I had everything prepped and ready to go then I checked the wind and 3 different sites called for 13 knots all day so I decided to sleep in, to say the least I was bummed I didn't head out. I got bait from the barge Friday and they had the biggest sardines I have ever seen. Anywho nice report :you_rock:

jorluivil 12-01-2014 05:26 AM

Yep forecast was accurate. When I arrived it was blowing under 10mph but by 9am it was blowing well over 10mph, the rain came in after 10am. I was prepared for the rain so I decided to stay on the water, started heading in at 1200..................you gotta take them as they come.

Using short Barries for butt bait might be effective but it's totally illegal. How many stinger hooks did you put into it anyways...just wondering. Jim

Since you didn't post a picture of the Butt George, how did you get those filets from that Barracuda?

Well hats off to you for taking care of business like a man, unlike my sorry a$$. I think I will be sneaking out of work Friday to Hali hunt. Let me know if you would like to join. Thanks again George

Great video! What do you have your GoPro mounted to? I really dig the angle you get from being in the the rocket launcher.

Great video George.

Why are you wearing gloves and a wool hat?

Is this not California?

I think you need to work on your Ninja skills. Every time you reached for your gaff the fish took off again lol. About time you got to reach for it again though!

Yeah....that was a pretty pathetic display of halibutsmanship.....I think we might have to revoke Jorge's halibut card.

hey, i've been trying to target halibut at cabrillo with not much luck. the main thing that i was wondering (i tried to find the answer in tons of vids and pics)... is your sinker line longer or your hook leader line longer? i'm not sure which one is more effective at cabrillo.

I've tried all sort of different setups and they all catch fish but the one thing I use consistently is an 8oz sinker. As far as areas to fish.......I'm amazed at how many kayakers will not go past the D marker or the bait barge, when/if you do this you're limiting yourself to about 25% of the areas that hold fish. Don't get me wrong, the areas near the E marker can hold fish but why would you want to limit yourself?

GregAndrew 12-05-2014 08:03 AM

I will take a shot at the answer to that. Cabrillo, like most harbors, has very limited visibility at most times. In those cases, it is more important to keep your bait very near the bottom. From my experience, I would guess that my finbaits stay up and in the direction of my travel most of the time. The distance between the sinker and the hook then is more important than either leader individually. That being said, for landing using a 3-way setup, you will be better off with a shorter sinker leader. A sinker banging into them will often cause them to get lively again. A couple nice advantages of the Dropper Loop (and I use that name generically) or its short haired cousin the Drop Shot, on the other hand, is that they keep the bait at the height you select and generally keep the sinker out of the way at landing.
