Slow day at Dana 5/7

King Saba and I tried to fish the pipeline today. The winds made it hard to hold position. Saba managed a sandy continuing his no-skunk streak. I only managed a small lizard.

There was lots of chop. No other yak fishers seen. We were probably the only ones dumb enough to go out today. Oh well, got to grab the chance to fish when the warden allows me to.

Afterwards we headed back to the harbor to take our frustrations out on some Spotties. I managed a small spot and a small calico. Saba got at least four spots.

Overall a slow day but still lots of fun.

I woke up today and saw how windy it was and decided not to go out. It looked really dirty green out a good ways too. When I see sailboats leaving the harbor, I know it's probably not good for kayaking ;) Can't wait for this wind to let up, we'll see how it is in the morning. Thanks for the report!

Thanks for the report. Too bad about the wind. An offshore or the right sw wind can blow you along the pipe more or less. But, anything else make for tough fishing. At least you guys scratched a few out of the harbor.

Thanks guys. The water was also a strange color and turbid. Maybe because there was some dredging going on along Doheney.

Yeah, lots of sailboats. At one point we were told that we better leave an area we were fishing at since there was going to be a sailboat race later.

Yup, can't wait for better kayak fishing weather.

It was a bit daring of us to be on the water, but damn it all we wanted to fish! lol. I do wish we could have the luxury of being closer to the coast to pick our days, but oh well. I was glad to be able to get out there regardless of how crazy it might have been since it was windy wherever we would have gone to.

The pipe had biters, but the problem was staying on it in the wind. If you even stopped pedaling or paddling for a moment you would already have been blown 30 yds west from it. It was frustrating to say in the least. Eventually we gave up and just fished inside using a favorable wind, FOR ONCE! Maybe we should go for those threshers next time for a sleigh ride. :D

Where did you find the spotties??

alanw 05-10-2016 09:48 AM

I don't remember ever catching a Spottie at DP, lots of Calicos and Sandies.

They are there. Mostly at dock pilings and in empty slip areas. We got them on plastics. ZMan swimz.

They are there but not in the same size and numbers as NPH or MB. We only fish for spots at DPH if the open waters are too nasty or slow.
