Asking for intel about fishing in San Felipe, Baja.

I will be stopping on the way to and from Bahia Asuncion in San Felipe.

I will have two afternoons in San Felipe and asking for intel on fishing there.

Primarily surf fishing, since Panga may be out of my budget.

Thanks in advance.

fishnstix 08-31-2018 05:36 PM

don't bother...fishing sucks in SF.

Baja_Traveler 08-31-2018 07:31 PM

Drive one and a half hours further south...

CardShark 08-31-2018 09:14 PM

Well, that sucks.
I'm planning on joining Mahigeer on his trip and was hoping not to waste the days in San Felipe.

What's wrong with the fishing there?

Dannowar 09-01-2018 02:04 AM

Just look at a map. There’s virtually no structure whatsoever. sF is basically where the salt flats turn into the sea. Like everyone else said. Go south

Mahigeer 09-01-2018 07:07 AM

Thank you for your inputs. Keep them coming please.

Before posting here I had made two "non-cancellable" hotel reservations. October 4th and 11th.

San Felipe is a rest stop on the way to see Rossman in Bahia Asuncion. Waaaaaaaaaaaay south.
same on the way back.

I have only seen the Calimax, the taco place and whatever was in route to Gonzaga Bay.
Some sightseeing is in order. Also some adult drinks and locally prepared food could be enjoyed to celebrate life.

Going south, then coming back north then going back south next day is little too much driving.
Plan is to see Luis on the way and show Cardshark (if he is riding with me) the Mako-ville on the way south.

Perhaps a trip to Puertecitos hot springs should be done on the 4th instead of fishing.
The tide seems good on the 11th, not too good on the 4th.

I also plan to stop at Bahia Santa Rosaliita, where I fished in 2012.

Thanks again for your advise.

Mahigeer 09-02-2018 07:39 AM

Good morning members,

Well since there were a lot of suggestions here to skip San Felipe (SF) for fishing and go south, I did some further thinking about it.
It seems that if the travel times work out per Google Maps, we should be in (SF) around 9:00 AM or so.

Hotel check-in is at 3:00 PM, so we have (6) hours before checking in to our rooms. And about (10) hours of daylight for fishing and travel.

Therefore, we can keep going south to visit Mako-ville and Alfonsino’s. We can do some fishing there from surf and enjoy some meals and drinks. Then back track to (SF) to stay for the night.

The next day we can keep going south toward Coco’s Corner and Bahia Asuncion (BA) without stops at Mako-ville and Alfonsino’s as previously planned. This also gives us a little more assurance that we arrive during daylight at (BA).

The only drawback is traveling the rough (per my last experience) 74 KM or so of the road south of (SF).
We would be traveling that road three times, plus the once on return. We can fish the Alfonsino’s on the way to US too on the 11th.

YakDout 09-02-2018 07:56 AM

Be sure to bring multiple spare tires. And possibly an on board compressor to air down over the bad section and be able to air back up

Thanks for the tip.

After my first tip to Mako-ville, I bought a lot stuff to get me out of jam including new (4) wheel drive 4Runner.
50" High-lift jack, heavy duty Road chew plates, fast tire deflator, compressor, tow straps, etc.
Thus, I am prepared for getting stuck in sand. I even learned a trick or two from others at Mako-Ville.

With just the 4 wheel drive capability, I did not have to air down at Mako-Ville.

I will have one spare tire, but don’t have room for “multiple spare tires”.

Mahigeer 09-02-2018 12:15 PM

Another option is before checking-in at the hotel in (SF) to visit the hot springs in Puertocito to soak some old bones.

Maybe even cast a line or two.

rossman 09-02-2018 04:46 PM

Just in case you didn't know, there is some additional road construction going on between SF and Puertocitos. So in addition to it being rough in the past, there are some significant detours on dirt in that section.

Mahigeer 09-02-2018 05:22 PM

Thanks for the tip Ross.

My plans are not set in stone.

We may make some changes as we see fit.

The main objective is NOT to stress out and have fun.

As usual, it is taking a long time for the rip to start, yet it will wiz by once I get on the road in Los Angeles.

I am not doubting others suggestions of not a good place to fish, but looking at Google Maps in Satellite mode, the Mako-ville and around the islands don't look any better.

Yet there is good fishing there sometimes around the islands.

Lots of structure at Bahia de Los Angeles, and Bahia Asuncion.

ProfessorLongArms 09-03-2018 08:49 AM

On San Felipe-

If I recall correctly from reading Baja catch, the fishing industry just destroyed that area years back, that it never fully recovered, and it stands as a bit of a testament to management practices

Good to know. Thanks.

fishnstix 09-03-2018 05:08 PM

You can google the chit out of it or listen to seasoned pros...San Felipe fishing is non existent especially from shore. Fishing STARTS to improve at the northern edge of the Encantada reef (Mako Bobs) and improves from average to incredible the farther you travel down the islands towards San Fransiquito and the islands/reefs at LA Bay and further south.

That's my 2 cents...and I do know what I am talking about

Mahigeer 09-03-2018 06:13 PM

Thank you.

You realize that the encantadas are a mountain range......even what you can’t see...

I would just take the loss on the hotel room and stay at Mako Ville. Save yourself the back and forth driving. Makes a much more liesurely trip with more time to :reel:

Mahigeer 09-04-2018 08:43 AM

Any information about this island?

I cannot find it on Google Maps.

Consag rock.
A full sail looking rock in the middle of nowhere. It is the main and only panga destination other than for white croakers which are everywhere.

Try not to reinvent the wheel. You are asking for the publics opinions but are determined to disregard it. The fishing will improve dramatically after Puertecitos.

Now that's the best advice yet!

"You are asking for the publics opinions but are determined to disregard it."

Not at all. All suggestions are welcomed.

I am asking for information and based on the information gathered by various means will decide what is best for me to do.

Time wise and money wise.

All tips and suggestions are appreciated.

I do wish that I had posted here first for suggestions before making a non-refundable reservations in San Felipe.

Alfonsina's would have been a better place to stay, but reservation system there is not very reliable.
Lack of Spanish fluency was another obstacle.

Oh well.

patoloco 09-04-2018 02:45 PM

The time spent in Calimax is about all the time you need to spend in San Felipe.

Where to stay in Mako-ville?

Since I am staying with Rossman and there maybe two of us, I am not taking all the necessary items to camp at Mako-ville. Even if there was room in my 4Runner.

Forfeiting $200.00 for two separate night’s stay because the fishing is not good for two half days, does not seem right. Hopefully we will have our share of good fishing in Asuncion.

On the way back we will stop at Alfonsina’s for fishing before going to San Felipe to check-in.

Mahigeer 09-04-2018 03:23 PM

Consag rock
Thanks for the correction. It helped finding it on the map. Not the Google Maps though!

The Konsag Island--to Consag Rock--or Roca Consag in Spanish, is per Wikipidia:
“(Consag Rock) is a granitic (or more precisely, dacitic) outcrop located in the northern Gulf of California about 22 miles[1][2] ENE of the town of San Felipe. The outcrop stands about 286 feet above the sea, and is named for the Jesuit missionary Ferdinand Konščak who was active in the early exploration and missionary work in Baja California. The ruins of an abandoned lighthouse can be seen on the west side of the outcrop.[3] The waters in the vicinity of the Roca Consag are a popular fishing area and also favored for spotting whales and porpoises.”

It seems it is mostly small fish and perhaps not worth the possible $50.00/person or more cost of Panga rental.

Sounds like such a fun trip/adventure Arkadash!!
I wish you safe travels and lots of fun.
I'm sure your photo diary/report upon your return will be just as exciting for those of us landlocked for the time being.

Cheers.

Arkadash=Friend, Amigo.

Çok teşekkür ederim (Thank you very much in Turkish)

I will be sure to have a report. I hope it will be full of fish pictures.

Denis_Ruso 09-05-2018 07:16 AM

As long as there's no group there, i'm pretty sure all you need is cot to set up in the Mako-ville garage.

MrPukaShell 09-05-2018 07:56 AM

Sleep on the roof and you don't need a cot.

How about spider bites, Robert?

You can see it from the first time you see the sea on the 5 all the way into SF.

Mahigeer 09-06-2018 10:21 AM

Thanks,

Now I will look for it.

So it is confirmed that Cardshark will be joining me on this adventure.

MrPukaShell 09-06-2018 01:37 PM

That was on the ground next to those old campers, my fault all the way. I would sleep on the roof on a cot in a heartbeat

Baja_Traveler 09-06-2018 04:26 PM

Don't bother paying a panga to take you out to that rock - it is a big sealion rookery. You won't catch anything there...

Mahigeer 09-07-2018 08:01 AM

Thanks guys.

Fishing in San Felipe and hotel stay is out. Thanks for the tips.

On the 4th, going south to visit Puertecitos, Mako-ville and have tacos in Alfonsina’s.

The only side trips (stops) planned depending on what time it is:

Coco’s Corner,

Bahia Santa Rosaliita where, I was there in 2012 and met a couple.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WylvaJF_Xo

Other is Tony’s Mariscos for some seafood cocktails before Guerrero Negro.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6ZDl8V0Ya4
