Saw this @ Dana Landing Today

To be honest I was kind of bummed out seeing this big beautiful female hanging there. These big breeders keep the species going.

It was this guys 3 rd. Thresher Shark in a week. 415 lbs.
-In the midst of what we all are facing with the MLPA you would think people would exercise more discretion.
A few of the local fisherman at Dana were not happy to see this sight either knowing it was his 3rd. and had their say.

During Hunting Season we never hunted Doe, only Bucks to insure the herd stayed strong.

My brother was on a boat over the weekend that hooked into something really big while targeting Threshers. They fought it for four and a half hours before it broke off 100# test line. They never saw the fish. The guy on the rod was a pro so I am sure he did everything possible to bring this fish to the boat.

I wonder how big a fish this one might have been? Can you imagine hooking into something like that on a kayak?

Yeah, it really is a shame that all of these people are killing the big breaders. I understand if you want to keep one for food, but a 300lb. shark could feed you for the rest of the year. Keeping three is disgusting. All of the 40 to 100lb. pupps that we catch on the kayaks are thanks to breeders like this big shark. I strongly encourage everyone to educate people on how not to wipe out our fishery.

Yea kinda sad but you don't know exactly how it died? But figureing it was his third this season probably aimed at boating it no matter how it was hooked. You see the same thing in Cabo with all size marlin being hung all day long...

Im no tree hugger but in the case of T-sharks sometimes fishermen are their own worse enemies. How many steaks or freezers full do you need? DFG considered regulating T-shark fishing last year and MLPA is on the menu now.

You cant regulate common sence.

Excellent table fare...kept one last year that was about 80, it lasted us the whole summer, several bbq's with family, and many dinners, it was delicious... I wont keep any this year...just a personal thing.

IMHO, from what I've heard, the ones in the 70-100 lb class are the best to keep (male), while the bigger models (females), are of course the ones making all the babies. Makes sense to let the breeders swim away. I am no marine biologist though...

I have never caught a "T" but how do you tell a female from a male?

dorado50 05-08-2009 12:55 PM

when you cut the belly about 20 pups fall out............of the female.

The males have elongated "claspers" extending from the base of their pelvic fins. Females do not.

This is a male (the arrow points to the claspers):

My friends and I keep one T per year. For the group. Everyone gets all they need. Anymore is just wasteful. If the guy needs to catch more, he should take some pics of the shark and release it. Most of that third fish will either go to market illegally, or wasted. Either ending is not very noble for a beast that great.
