While not too difficult of an installation, it was definitely NOT a Saturday job while enjoying a beer as indicated in the easy to follow instructions. Maybe a handful of Bombay Safire’s might have helped ease my anxiety and stress a littler more than a beer. But then I would not have been able set down my glass since my hands and wrists were consistently covered in Marine Goop (I went through about 10 pairs of rubber gloves). Gloves or no gloves that crap manages to find its way onto everything, especially when trying to get the 3/4in. S/S screws through the deck seal and tank ring seal for the nylon nut to catch a thread on the back side. The screws are just a tad too short! My suggestion; don’t use your high dollar tools when doing this yourself and use a longer screw or rivet.

Actually, I don’t think I would attempt to do this again, period. In fact, I would rather lock myself in a two-bit German whore house vs. attempting this again! Whatever fee OEX charges for the installation is INCONTESTABLY worth it!!!!!!!

My question is this: After following the instructions to the tee, I though it best to drop (figure of speech) the yak in the pool prior to the ocean. However, after letting the system run for over 3 hours, I noticed a pooling of water in the hull, which was not there before. Not a whole lot of water, but there definitely was some. I have no clue as to where the water is coming from. All fittings were double and triple check for tightness, the external screen or pick-up and L-fitting were secured and a final bead of 3M sealant was applied. Further, I allowed for over 48 hours of drying time before putting the yak in the pool. The tank only fills to approximately 2/3 capacity, so water is definitely not escaping between the hatch seal and tank. I do not want to have to remove the tank and re-check the hose fittings at the tank, but if I have to, I will.

Any suggestions?

Love the Bombay Saphire reference....too funny. Having a Kayatank, I can only imagine doing it myself. Good luck with rest!

OEX Pt. Loma

Hey if you are having problems you should probably contact CJ at OEX Point Loma, I am sure he will be happy to give you a hand with it!!

Siebler 02-08-2009 11:35 AM

Call me, like Matt said

619-758-9531

9-5 everyday. I install all of OEX's KayaTanks (except SSB). Ive done a lot of the Xfactor Tanks and I might have an idea of where its leaking from.

Iceman 02-08-2009 11:35 AM

closest to Sunset Beach.............

time consuming and gooey setting up the bladder for sure, but should be a 2 hour job.:D

If you can, poke your head in the bow or back hatch while it is running, to find the source of water.

Give CJ the master a call.............

If all else fails, bring it by and I'll check it over ..........no charge.

A Tip for working with goop, Friction (rubbing your hands together) will make it ball right up and come off. Super easy MUCH better than 5200 like we used to use. Although much better the goop still does tend to make a mess on certain tools (especially sockets). We do tend to use less expensive, more disposable tools when working with any sealant.

Also if you go with too long of a bolt (1") your going to end up with a lot inside the tank. You will catch your fingers, bait net, etc on them. Rivets do NOT have the strength to hold up the KayaTank (for all of those Future installers don't try using rivets). Although the 3/4" bolt may be difficult to get started the end result is worth it. Note that the use of Spring Clamps to hold everything together will make getting these bolts in much much easier.

Again feel free to call me and lets get this figured out, or stop by SSB and let Andy help figure it out.

During my 3 hour observation tour, I dawned my old wet-suite, in which I looked like 10lbs of crap in a 5lbs bag. A sight for the sore eyes. Anyway, with the rear hatch removed, I could look in at the fittings on the pump as well as the fittings on the drain side. Both appeared to be holding nicely. I also opened the front hatch and but could not really see too much.

So, within the last hour I removed the tank and bench tested it by plugging the fitting and filling it up approximately 3 inches. Here’s my observation; the bottom seam on the side with the pump fittings had water coming up through the seam, not a whole lot, and definitely not to the capacity that I observed in the hull while in the pool, but there was definite leakage.

So, I removed the tank, not exactly what I wanted to do and went back to the Marine Goop and re-sealed all seams. This time, no beer, only Bombay Safire!

CJ, I am taking Andy’s advice and will call shortly.

Respectfully……

Thank's CJ for taking a few min's out of your day to help!

Roger

WahooUSMA 02-08-2009 03:43 PM

CJ, Thanks again for your help. I resealed the exterior and interior of the tank and I am confident that will do the trick. The tank is now back in the hull and I will test her out tomorrow (in the pool of course, just in case). Bolts work just fine now with plenty of threads to grab on to due to the tanks rim being previously compressed from the previous install. Glad I did not try the longer bolts.

Take care.
