Kayak Storage cart
 

Has anyone modified a utility cart to store there kayak? I just purchased a 2020 outback and trying to find the best way to store it in a cluttered garage. Was thinking of modifying this cart.

I haven’t modified this cart. But I can tell you it would be real tippy. You want some as long and wide as you can stand. If your rolling your cart out of the garage and Into the drive way a small rock or the joint between garage and driveway and this will tip over. If you make a monstrous cart you get to have storage for all your gear underneath. The cart I built it’s 5’ long and 40” wide. Super stable and goes over bumps just fine.

And for sale of maneuverability. Get 4 caster wheels. Makes moving around a lot easier.

Thanks for the info. I know the cart is suppose to be 5'x 3' x 4' high. I'm hoping not to have to move it much just trying to get it up off the ground. By the way the PVC you used is it 3" ?

If I were going to modify a rack I would try to use something like this (or two):

You don't get the storage with this but they are pretty solid with good wheels. 1000 lb capacity! A used one if you can find one is probably the best.

That’s 2”. I like the way it flexes. Stored all of my hobies like this and haven’t had any problems.

The height of my cart is just higher then my tailgate. But you want to measure with your tailgate down where you will be actually loading. I I built the cart a little oversized, but that was just using up all the material I had, and there’s always going to be a kayak on it. So it doesn’t really matter.

I agree with Igotpron. That cart may be "tippy" and if you bump it or look at it wrong, it could be a bad day. You could just build a simple/low to the ground wood cart with casters. I've modded my kids wagon with a couple of removable wood carts. When they are not on the wagon, I put casters on the bottom. It's solid. :cheers1:

Thanks for all the info and pics of the carts. Still waiting on my yak to come in hopefully this week.

Surprisingly it’s very stable and I can wheel it right up to my truck to load it.

Electric hoist. Lowers right into the bed of my truck.
