PST

A sparse showing for Bajapalooza '06. Got down to PST with Corey about midnight on Friday, with little wind and a full moon to make setting up the tent an easy project. I forgot the camera at home, so no pictures.

Saturday morning was nice and calm. Birds were working schools of anchovies being eaten by candy greenbacks, but the food chain seemed to end there on the surface action. Joined up with Tobey, Avery, Gary, and Corey in working a reef that varied in depth from 30 to 80 ft. Lots of rockfish. The majority were olive rockfish, I believe. The wind gradually grew throughout the day. When the drift became too fast I tied up to some bull kelp in about 90 ft. of water. Caught quite a few more of the olive, along with some cabezon, reds, and whitefish. I'd like to hook a 8lb whitefish some day, they pull. After the 50th wind wave slopped over the side of the kayak, I decided to call it a day.

Some of the Loco Pescadores had rented a casa, so joined them for some outstanding dinner and many, many drinks. It rained off and on Saturday night and early Sunday morning. The swell had really picked up and the wind was howling today, so decided not to fish this morning.

It was a good weekend, and thanks to everyone who came down and made it so. I wonder if there will be any YT off Punta Banda in February?

Sorry guys we got tied up in Colonet... There was a little surf there, but with La Jolla training we all made it out everyday... A couple surfers had some nice rides, some of these waves were nice and hollow.

Let's just say there is definately a new front runner in the WCW!!!! ie, not Brad. I don't want to give anything away, but is this Ken in this pic, it came out blurry... :P

Chris-Looks EPIC...standing by for the rest of the story!

FARKLE!

PST /= Colonet, thread-jacker.

PST was the best trip I've taken to specifically target rockfish. I was really surprised how few people showed up. Pretty bummed actually. Now I see that some took there ball and went and played elsewhere.

As soon as I get some pix hosted, I'll post 'em up.

That Chris, always teasing.

We should have gone to PST, sounds like you guys had better fishing. Surf at Colonet was hairy, with some off shore reef breaks that could spring up out of nowhere. Our jackpot was won by Litup1 with a sandbass.
The only action I found was a wide open tomcod bite, while not trying to dodge the grey whales that kept popping up uncomfortably close. I'll let Chris give the full details of a heck of an adventure.

kurt 01-16-2006 07:34 AM

I got into a wide open tomcod bite off of Erendira last summer. I haven't gone back because I don't think my heart could handle the excitement again. So Ken wasn't in the jackpot?

Tomcod count as exotics under the new rules, right?

madscientist 01-16-2006 09:17 AM

I think all Ken caught was a wicked buzz from some good tequila.

Chris may still be a little addled from all the beer they drank on the drive back. Beer was the root cause of many of our "adventures". Got to see my first Baja meltdown though, pretty amusing.

Where can I get a Froman slingshot necklace. Too bad about the weather, still wish I would have been along for the ride.

Lit-up1 01-16-2006 10:04 AM

FROMAN

The trip was fun and not very fishy-I definately want to go back there.
The endless rock wall was worth the trip just to see.
I met Froman and shook his hand-why I don't know.
Do you suppose he shoots his dinners with the slingshots
Carne-de-rato-tacos

Dave

Froman belongs in a Mad Max film.

I was just having fun Zed, sorry if you were offended. But we had planned to go to Colonet first, then up to PST. Then a SNAFU occured. I am glad you had the best time ever in PST! 8)

If I write up anything I will start a new thread, it will be called Fishless in Colonet! :D

hey Chris
i'll go next time just to surf that fun little right hander in your pics!!!

Zed 01-16-2006 12:00 PM

No worries, Holy.

The only way the insane-o rockfishing  could have been better, was more heads with whom to talk about it.

Anybody that loves shallow water r/f, will love PST. Releasing rockfish rules!

ditto---who needs fish with wind shelter'd little barrels like that?

steamroll 01-16-2006 01:19 PM

Colonet was fun even though the fishing was slow. The Baja Meltdown was classic. I have lots of pics. I'll post them in the morning.

Zed 01-16-2006 04:30 PM

The sling-shots are at the border. That area where you just don't make eye contact with the vendors...
They're in there.

I do want to here the meltdown story. If it was a tranny meltdown, I REALLY want to hear it.

My upload of pix will be soon. Most of you know the scenery is the best part...unless you like rockfishing.

madscientist 01-16-2006 05:20 PM

Don't want to give away the entire story, but let's just say I was the only one of 4 vehicles that could drive out for help Friday morning. 8) And one of the other three was freakin out.

The pics will tell the story better than anything. :D

Brad, I think someone has photograph of just how wicked that tequila was.

Fun trip even if the fish didn't want to play.

Mr_PeaCH 01-16-2006 05:29 PM

Hola to my PST brethren! At the end of a three-day weekend, the Peach stood alone... everyone else packed it in by mid-day Sunday due to some fairly shitty conditions. Don't hold your breath, it didn't get much better on Monday but I just had to stay and see for myself. Wind was down just a tad and the swell if anything had grown even bigger. Pretty hairy but at least today I didn't come close to capsizing. I may have some scenic pics to post later when I unpack my camera.
