looking for some one to show me the ropes in the kelp!

Just got my yak and itching to go out. Just don't want to be silly and go out solo and inexperienced. I'm free Friday and Saturday!

Dannowar 10-16-2014 09:33 PM

Going out solo and inexperienced is half the fun!!!

Meet new people. Network. Spend time in the water. Check past threads when people will be heading out, make friends, offer beer. You've stumbled in a great resource. May many toads be in your future!

Congratulations on your new kayak! :luxhello:

Taking your first fishing trip out of la jolla is probably not a good idea. I would reccomend you get some experience on flat water before you venture out into open water.

We've seen guys quit right away...you might want to find out if kayak fishing is for you before you put yourself in a precarious position.

While I agree, I remember heading out to la jolla with minimum knowledge and never being in a kayak before. If the sense if adventure is there, I say go for it.

Huntington harbor is a good place to practice i recommend fishing there just don't go pass the PCH bridge.

Of course, I mean no one ever dies cause they had a sense of adventure having tried something risky for the first time solo.

Great advice as always!

Oh god it's always some boo hoo comment with you. Kayak fishing is no more dangerous than half the shit you do everyday. Why don't you show him the ropes then momo.... Instead of crying about every word that comes out of my mouth.

Kaleb 10-16-2014 10:48 PM

I did get a chance to take it out on mission bay today, practiced tipping over, getting back in, staying in a straight line, accessing my shit. That was the hardest part, the wakes never threw me off just the awkward places I had to reach to to access some stuff.

Dude shoot me a PM. I'll show you the ropes

momo fish 10-16-2014 11:31 PM

Stop giving careless advise to a newbie to head out solo with all the things that could go wrong on the water. Yes we get it your a tough guy and love risk but do not tell someone asking to buddy up to head solo that's just dumb.

If he lives closer I would take him out and have plenty of guys on this board and off. This ain't the movies hero's don't always live to share their "sense of adventure"

Kayak fishing is not hard. Im not a tough guy and I'm actually pretty effing nice, stop being a barney. the guy is obviously ready to assume the risk, hence this entire thread. Hordes of people before Me, and you, have trudged out by themselves and had great success. i don't paddle out into the middle of the ocean to be tough, i do it because i can be at peace with myself. everybody does things for different reasons, but don't sit here and tell me my advice is "dumb" because you wanna sit around with your tail tucked at any chance of risk. You have yourself a great night, I'm going fishing.

From this post sounds like you've got a good head on your shoulders and good judgment, if you still only plan sticking to short trips to the kelp, I say go for it. You've practiced for the sticky situations, you get the gist of it, so why not. This coming from a fellow noob, it's not too bad going out alone just mind your personal capabilities don't be too cocky and just have fun. You've got a better chance of getting advice by meeting someone on the water anyway. Just my opinion guys no need to argue over others entitlements this is supposed to be fun.... I think? :D

Hey Kaleb,

We're planning to launch out of La Jolla Saturday Morning at 6:00A. Bring some solid snacks and some water to stay hydrated. Also, be prepared to have fun and put up with all kinds of ridiculousness.

Saturday, October 18th 6:00A - 6:30A. Be There.

We're planning to stay on the water until
  1. we run out of daylight

    or

  2. we load up on limits of Yellowtail, Rockfish, White Seabass, lobsters and Bonito
whichever happens first.

PM me and I'll get you my cell number... or you can PM me your cell number and I'll call you tonight. I promise I don't bite unless you look like this:

Would help to post where you are located. I take it from a later comment that you are in the San Diego area, but we have people on these boards up and down the coast, and elsewhere

At least your starting off right. Sounds like there is no stopping you from going out of La Jolla on your first trip. No doubt it'll be a lot of fun...if you make it out safe and make it back safe. Hopefully you can keep up with the more experienced guys that take you out.

Yellowtail, seabass, rockfish and lobster...?

Boy...your gonna have some fun! :luxhello:

otterpupster 10-17-2014 07:52 AM

If ur in the Long Beach area I can show you the Palos Verde area with scattered areas of Kelp beds.

monstahfish 10-17-2014 09:16 AM

Kaleb, Check your PMs. I've only been on the west coast for a year, but I have a lot of experience in the salt from the east coast and I'm in the market for a few new fishing buddies and do a lot of different kinds of trips and tactics.

Kaleb 10-17-2014 12:27 PM

Replied to ya! Looks like first light la Jolla is a go?!

tacmik 10-17-2014 02:35 PM

Go have fun. La Jolla isn't all that bad and a good place to practice launching and landings. Just make sure everything is stowed or lashed down. You may not roll this time, but you will sometime. Take some extra clothes to change into when you get back to shore as you will get wet. Good luck out there.
