BOONEDOX Landing gear update

The replacement struts for your Boonedox landing gear should now be in the mail, check with OEX Mission Bay for details.

Just curious, This is a pretty new product. Did they find a design flaw and are correcting it or what? Why do the struts need replaced? I have been thinking about buying a set, but haven't pulled the trigger yet. I know that I really don't like spilling all of my gear out plugging the wheels into my Outback.

They have available Wheelez option. Looks like the same wheels as my Hobie trax 2-30 cart.

You might want to make sure you have adequate mounting plates. I saw in a Pro Angler group page that some were developing cracks at the mounting points.

They were designed for yaks, the Solo at 150 pounds PLUS motor was too much stress on the struts in soft sand. New struts are a heavier gauge of s/s tubing and will be overkill. Most of us paid $400 for the wheeleze model. They should be bullet proof now, Will post after trip to baja and really soft sand. Tight Lines amigos.

Thanks

That clears it up, and is the answer I was expecting. I will anxiously await your soft sand report. hope you have a great trip!

Kirk are you looking at the Solo or for a Hobie?

kirkdavis 08-24-2017 09:26 AM

Outback

I have a 2015 Outback and an older outbackesque "Mirage". I saw the other day they have SS rods to reinforce the mounting points for the Outback.

These are nice! Is it possible to take the wheels off my mini wheelez and replace the standard wheels of the boondox?

Rob you might have to change the tire hub bearing but it is just plastic parts. easily done.
Kirk, the unit was great for outbacks and PA's before the Solo upgrade, no one was having problems. It was a combination of bth Solo weight with engine AND soft sand. Seems all problems were with our So Cal guys as we work our gear hard.

Thanks homie, I freakin hate setting up those mini wheelez for the few hundred feet from our pad to the beach. This seems like an easy fix.

Half the time I just end up carrying my yaks down with whoever I'm fishing with. It really sucks carrying them back uphill back to the house, especially after a long day of catching fish:D

Regarding the Wheeleze: with a fully loaded Pro Angler I was finding that the tires were getting pinched and would split and puncture near the inflation nozzle where the tire transitioned from thick/stiff to flexible.

That would not be on Boonedox but on the wheeleze tires, they all have weight limits depending on tire size. How old they are and how much time in the sun. Flat tires happen, was your tire pressure too low?

I noticed that the Wheeleez and the Hobie sand carts are rated for 176 pounds max, which is not enough for a Hobie PA14 fully loaded (145 pounds for the fitted hull plus gear is closer to 200 pounds). The Malone sand carts are rated at 250 pounds max, which might be a slightly better option to fit to your landing gear.

Very good. The heavier the load the larger diameter tire you need, also tire pressure plays a role. Too high or too low both have their problems. Tight Lines.

Put the new Boonedox struts on the SOLO, added motor and fuel tank, piece of cake in soft Gonzaga sand. Perfect. Tight Lines.
