Fly fishermen
 

With a TFO BVK 10 WT fly rod and Hatch Finatic 9+ what size fish should it be able to handle? What line would you couple this with for Baja? Thanks for your input.

Is it the norm.....
 

To be in Baja and not post pictures of catches just wondering

It is when you are computer illiterate and computer says you need security tokens to be able to post.

I think overall that 10wt is more than enough unless you're specifically targeting those Island Roosters.(you know my opinion on that) If you can get an extra spool with the reel I would really recommend it, that way you can have both Full sinking and floating line depending on what you're doing.

I almost always use a 350 grain shooting head Rio saltwater (warmwater) for everything even fishing from shore, but if you want to throw a popper on you really need floating line......

This is what I've been using on my 10 weight. I really like this line and it throws big flies really well. Built specifically for big tropical fish with toughness to contact coral and structure during a fight...

I agree on having several spools if they are available.

love the bvk series. tfo has a great warranty. pull hard![emoji6] have an 8 at and wrangled under 20lb yt with it...only cuz I haven't got into anything bigger.

I really think its possible to land those larger roosters from the Yak with a 10wt, Mike landed that nice one last year on his, but on the other side to that I got towed around for over an hour and that fish would not leave the bottom. I'm sure if I had to, I could have worn that fish out and got him to the boat, but it would have killed him for sure.

With enough time you can tire any fish out, but in 80-85 degree water we had several of those larger roosters that we couldn't revive, and several others that took like what 20 minutes to get to swim off? I'd rather have something with more backbone to get the fish in quicker so I can have a successful release than be able to say I landed a monster on light line.

I'm gonna try and come down to SD soon and do some yak fishing, ill hit you up when I know more and maybe we can do some fishin together:cheers1:

With that outfit you can land anything that can't break you off from the drag of the line in the water. My friend here who has a fly fishing shop and fishes a BFK in SW says you've made a good choice, both for rod and reel.
The BFK has a fast action so the rod bends closer to the tip than softer actions. That means the fish will have a longer lever arm to work with while you're trying to put the hurt on it.
If it doesn't spool you or take out so much line the leader gives from it pulling the line through the water, you can take most of what you can get a fly in front of. Good fishing!

Should be able to handle almost anything. I used to use rio lines but now prefer airflo. Maybe the tarpon line since they are designed for big fish and warm water... http://airflousa.com/project/tarpon/

That hatch reel is all you need great drag system!!...don't forget that hatch makes fly fishing lines .the problem with lines is that you need a special line for every style of fishing you are doing .. I get all my lines made at bob mariotts fly fishing store I use a 200grain 350 grain 450grain and a 900grain plus salt water floating lines .try to buy SAGE RODS they never let me down!!!my goal is to start welding my own fly fishing lines by this fall...

The Baja lifestyle is a close knit community of fisherman who share only good vibes and good times. The fish are plentiful and the more you take the more humble you become. Baja can be beautiful and uncrowded and posting a bunch of postcards will probably tempt you to make a visit. Which is why MY PICS ARE AT A MINIMUM. I promise you don't wanna come here. And you especially don't wanna bunk next to me :cheers1:
