I was salmon fishing on the Klickitat River wearing neoprene waders and yard sale'd the kayak into forty two degree water. I was not wearing a belt and the waders instantly filled with water. It was very difficult to flip the kayak and get back in.
I can say from direct first hand experience, if you wear waders in a kayak, wear a belt.

The only two problems I have with my waders is of course the belt. Never go out without it.
Trying to take a leak using waders without a zipper. You almost have to strip down to your knees just to accomplish that feat.

Ah, fall in San Diego. Calm sunny days, a bit of a chill in the mornings, the Chargers stumbling to yet another disappointing season, and the inevitable "waders of death" thread. Although just like Christmas advertising, it seems to come earlier every year.:D

Maybe we should start a pool for the first GW shark thread of the year. I'll say Feb 12th.

Having served 8 years in the Coast Guard, 4 of those being on the north shore of Long Island, I can't begin to tell you all the wader horror stories I've either been witness to. I've even had a couple of close calls myself having spent many winters chasing trout with a fly rod. When wearing the waterproof style chest waders, always leave one shoulder unstrapped so in the event you go under you can swim out of them. I have no experience wearing any type of waders while in a kayak so I can't speak on that.

I thought waders were for wading in or walking on a surface that is wet? :rolleyes:

Yaking would best be served by dry pants or wet suits. But I see people wearing waders in LJ all the time so they must be ok.

How do you launch your yak? Sit on the sand and wait for the tide to come in?

I was thinking maybe Doug could help us come up with a type of rocket assisted launch attachment to get us through the serious surf we have in LJ.:rolleyes:

I'm working on mechanical legs that will mount on the bottom of the kayak. That way you can just have your kayak walk you out through the surf. My biggest obstacle is making the legs waterproof to protect the internal wiring. I'm thinking about using waders to keep the mechanical legs dry, but I'm worried that they might fill with water and drag me down to my death:hmmmm:

Yeah I was one of the noobs that did the wader post last year. But it was around new years.

And I can now confidently say (:hahaha: unfortunately twice:doh: ), that if you roll your yak with waders on you won’t sink...in fact the only thing that will sink a little is your confidence.lol
