Straightened Hook @ DP ??

I'm new here, And pretty new to Yak fishing. Mostly i'll throw fly's but went out yesterday in Dana Point, with trolling setup, picked up some sardines from the bait barge. I was in search of some hallies.
Fished Doheny beach w/ no luck, water had no vis, and just couldn't seem to get on any fish. Then paddled back north towards the Point. Started about 35 ft of water 200yds or so out from the wall and drifted back in. All of a sudden BAM, line started shooting out. so i let it take for a sec. then grabbed the rig :reeling: and couldn't even turn the fish/monster . I was losing line by the second, finally full drag at about 35lbs test one good tug, and then nothing. Reeled in and i was left w/ no sardine and 2 hooks on the treble almost completely straightened out. It felt like i was attached to a U boat.
Any thoughts on what this was? I've caught a good size Leo this way but at least could turn the fish and fight it.
Just trying to feed the curiosity, any thoughts? Bat ray? Barry Sanders Underwater?

thanks,
paul

I'd guess bat ray

jorluivil 03-28-2013 10:28 AM

I'm going with Bat Ray or Leopard Shark

Grinder fish (bat ray).

No head shakes? Probably a big ray of some kind... or a Submarine!

Red October

:D

maybe bat ray... but if you have a light sardine... it could very well be a nice sized shark. the threshers and other big boys are heading in around this time.

batray = i could feel its good "wing beats" as line goes out
thresher = i just felt a straight constant pull the hole time. no tail slaps.
mako = i feel a constant straight pull, and cut the line when i saw a 8ft mako lol

jorluivil 03-28-2013 02:03 PM

It was probably a Mexican cartel submarine

I think you hooked Aquaman.

mralbacore 03-28-2013 03:20 PM

probably a great white shark!!!

Daltontribe 03-28-2013 03:57 PM

Probably a Giraffe i here they prefer the shallower waters this time of year ;)

As you say, Leos can be turned on light tackle. Bat rays are not a consistant catch at DP. My guess would be Thresher, they do come in close to the breakwater at times. The treble hook indicates that you had a stinger setup, Threshers slap their victims first and you may have tail hooked one. This would account for the bent hooks and not a break.

Of course, it could be a small GW, I've hooked one out thee before.

After all the helpful input,
I've made my conclusion,

A GW wearing a Jerome Bettis Jersey, who is still bitter about not getting voted into Pro Football HOF this year.
