I have been asked by renters if they can bring beer and checked with a friend in the harbor patrol. He said you can legally drink from the kayak, you can't be intoxicated. my favorite "beer"

You can drink beer on the water but not on the sand.

Innertubapalooza draws 3,000 floating drinkers
by Sebastian Ruiz

An estimated 3,000 funseekers took to the waters of Mission Bay recently for "Innertubapalooza 2009," the second such event designed to let partiers drink legally just yards from the shoreline where alcohol has been banned. Police handed out about 50 citations and arrested six people, while lifeguards had their hands full with about 18 water rescues. PHOTO COURTESY JEREMY MALECHA

Sail Bay in north Mission Bay played host to an estimated 3,000 people dragging innertubes, rafts and floats into the water to legally drink a beer on the bay on Saturday, Aug. 9. The second year for the floating party, dubbed “Innertubapalooza 2009,” saw the crowd balloon from an estimated 1,500 people expected to attend to more than double, causing police and lifeguards to pay extra-close attention to safety issues.

The flotilla also effectively circumvented the two-year-old ban on drinking on the beach and bay sands.

as long as you are not touching sand you can legally drink in the ocean in san diego. in the summer I often anchor my yak out side the surf line in front of my house on Law st. with a cooler of beer and some bait rods. i go surf, paddle out and have a beer, do a little fishing, go surf some more!
I like Coors for fishing, but IPA's are by far my favorite!

My favorite are many :D. I find these go great with fishing, just one 22 or a couple 12 oz bottles for a 6-8 hour day on the water:

Lagunitas - Hairy eyeball, Little Sumpin', 13, Cap Stout, Gnarly Wine, Pale Ale IPA

Ballast Point - Yellowtail, Calico, and Black Marlin

Sierra Nevada - Pale Ale, Stout Porter

Stone Brewery - Imperial Stout, IPA, Arrogant Bastard, Old Guardian,

Karl Strauss makes one hell of an IPA and Amber

So Many good breweries in San Diego. Ale Smith is another

Rogue makes a great stout and pale ale out of Organ

Yeah, but you can't take these ones out very often. Ok, lame joke.

I like to represent SD. Ballast Point, Stone and the occasional Strauss.

For non local, I like Pliny the Elder, the Three Philosophers, actually, don't get me started, I could go on all day. I like beer.
