Which Racks work best?
 

Hi,

Im new to kayak fishing. I just purchased a Kayak a couple of months ago and have been working on setting it up getting it ready for fishing. I just bought a 4runner to haul it, but I was wondering which type of racks have most of you had the most success on?

I've got the yakima racks with the Hully Rollers. It makes for easy loading on my
Montero and with a bit of jerry rigging, I can load a 2nd kayak on the racks.

FYI, on the hully rollers, I use a piece of 1/4 in. particle board when the yak
is on the racks for an extended period so that the roller wheels don't dent the
hull.

Get your racks at Rack It! in San Diego. Their prices are the lowest I've seen.

I have a Ford Explorer with factory rack. I added some pads and a couple of straps Toatl $50.00:kayak-surfer:

I have Yakimas too, though they’re the Outdoorsman(?) for the bed of my truck. I didn’t opt for any kayak attachments – I just throw it up on the racks. The hull gets dented from the cross bars. Probably not the best for the hull but I haven’t sunk yet.

Got them at REI. Took them off my Tacoma to put on my Tundra for a road trip a few years ago and found that the base that attaches to the rail of the truck bed was rusting (along with the hardware). Took them back to REI over a year later and they gave me a new set (return policy is why I bought them there in the first place).

Anyway, overall I like them. Thule has some decent racks as well.

I bought kayak saddles for my thule's. dont use them anymore. Most kayaks will sit happily on racks upside down. Less stress on the hull sitting on its rails. I think saddles are more for touring and white water sit inside kayaks

I also bought the kayak stacker that goes in the center of the racks. That way, I can transport two kayaks when I need to. I keep it off most of the time.

I use Yakima bars on the shell of my Tacoma. I have four sets of Landshark saddles and a side loader bar. I love this set up. My SOT yaks rode in my racks over 9,000 miles last year. Lots of travel and rough roads requires a good rack system.

I ended up at REI today and got a Thule 835XT at a steal. BTW they are on the clearance rack along with the 825 and Yakima stackers. 50% off. They are selling the 835xt for $60 and 825 for $45. I ended up getting them for $30 because the girl working the register insisted it was half of of the half off price. I couldn't say no to that:notworthy: Thanks for the help guys, indirectly it led me to REI. Hopefully I will see some of you out in the water this weekend.
