Yep was a big fang of the owner gorilla but now I'm using mainly flyliner and mutu. Just picked up four pro pack yesterday.

Gorilla light, all I use.

Mutu worked okay, but get better results with the Gorilla.

Between Owner ringed mutu #3 and Gamakatsu nautilus ringed #4, i think I like the extra heavy duty appearance of the owners. they seem very robust.

I've gone to exclusively circle hooks for live bait. Owner mutus and gamakatu nautilus mostly. I take hooks between 2/0 and 5/0.

I use circle hooks 99.99999% of the time, if I use J hooks its simply because I received them as a prize

Next trip out going to give the Gama rigged nautilus a go. In the past I have had problems with my bait being fouled with the hook any pointers?

Dingokevin, to avoid fouling, lately I've been experimenting with feeding the hook up vertically up through their mouth and out through the cartilage between their nostrils, rather than sideways through the nose.

How about the rest of you guys? What has been your experience using this or other methods to avoid fouling?

kirkdavis 05-18-2017 11:55 AM

I have used the vertical method, and it seems to work pretty good.

Guess I am going to give Owner circle hooks a try. I used to just use their standard J hooks.

DingoKevin - like LJ H20man, I also go vertical with the hook, up through the roof of the bait's mouth and out the top... just don't go from underneath the bait's chin and through the nose (essentially closing its mouth) as this will kill the bait fast without getting water into its gills.

Not too lucky

I guess you don't win too many prizes.

Mustad demon circles. $13 for a pack of 25. Owner hooks are way over priced. And to turn the mustads into a ringed hook, all you have to do is tie a 4-5 turn uni and leave it a little loose on the eye. Snugs up when bit.

Yakdout, good idea with using the loose uni knot to allow the hook to move like a ringed hook. Might give that one a try!

Gamakatsu nautilus or mustad demon, 2/0 to 6/0
