Original plan was to fish Lajolla. Arrived at the launch around 7:30 and the waves were lookin between 1-3’ but right behind each other. Didn’t have leashes and was more nervous about landing rather then launching.
Off I went to Kellogg’s st launch off of rosecrans. Made my way to the bait barge and bought a pricey scoop of healthy good size dines. Drifted and trolled the bottom for 3 bass (sandbass, calico, spotty), 4 halis ranging in size from 8” to 18”. Water was cold and tide was low from the time I launched to 3, wind was up.
Overall a good day without any keepers.

And...

a mantis shrimp! I caught one in the bay many years ago and luckily my buddy knew it was dangerous and told me to cut my line. Beautiful but dangerous.

Yep mantis shrimp it was really big. I considered taking it home and cooking it up but didn’t want to destroy a finger in the process so let him go.

You should've! The meat is sooo sweet. Best Crustacean around.

What can a mantis shrimp do to you?

I read somewhere that a mantis shrimp can generate the power of a .22LR with its little claw. I looked up videos and it doesn’t seem too dangerous. Not worth the risk to me without being familiar with them.

Just crush the little bastard first. Can't hurt you if its dead.

Video from National Geographic about Mantis Shrimp. "World's deadliest"

I ate one in Thailand. They are special.

They are also amazing and complex creatures, so I felt guilty and did not want any more mantis shrimps killed on my behalf.

They say they can puncture a dive tank while scuba diving.
