2017 BD Yellowtail Shootout Kayak Division!

KAYAK Division Cancelled!

OEX is the lead sponsor for the newly added kayak division. I think we kayak fishermen in So Cal, some of the biggest pioneers of big game kayak fishing, deserve to be represented in the kayak fishing realm with a "Big League" kayak fishing tournament.

In trying to launch this and make it successful and special, I have secured sites for camping for out of towners or locals who want to join in a weekend of camaraderie, kayak fishing and camp fires, the camping is FREE Friday-Sunday to anyone who signs up for the tournament and contacts me

pre-fish Friday, then Captain's meeting, fishing Saturday Tournament, fish Sunday AM and hit up the banquet and awards.

I need to ask a most important question...

does the 75 kayak fee include the lunch meal for $25?

Or is the lunch meal with the tournament price =$100

Will this kayak tournament have a kayak motor ban?

Iceman 04-27-2017 11:23 AM

No motors Frank! the $25 would be if you bring a guest, you are covered for the dinner with your $75 entry...........some crazy good raffle prizes and everybody only has one ticket each............good odds!

I think I know the answer to this but just want to double check. Are individuals in the kayak division required to attend the captains meeting the Friday before? I would be coming in from LA so need either leave work early, or skip out.. :)

Iceman 05-24-2017 09:43 AM

Yes all entered must attend Captain's meeting, hope you can make it!

PAL 05-24-2017 04:48 PM

Andy, can you please clarify the rules? It seems like it's okay to launch in the dark. Lines in is at 5, bait fishing is permitted before that, right?

What do you know about the cameras they give out, the ones you use to take the picture before you launch? It's a little different than what I'm used to. Really think I'm going to sign up.

Iceman 05-25-2017 09:01 AM

Yes bait making is ok prior to 5AM lines in. I will find out about the cameras. Pretty sure we will get identifiers at the Captains meeting that need to be in a photo. Hope you can make it!:kayak-surfer:

Bait making rules

Quote:

4. Tournament kayak may depart from La Jolla Beach Launch, Mission Bay, San Diego Bay, Oceanside Harbor, Dana Point Harbor or Newport Harbor. Beach Launch only.
5. Start of Tournament – Lines-in shall be Saturday, June 24, 2017 at 5:00AM PDT.
6. Making Bait – Bait fishing is allowed before lines-in. No other lure, jig, or line specifically rigged for any gamefish is allowed in the water before lines-in. Any yellowtail or jackpot fish by-catch must be released.

Iceman 05-25-2017 09:09 AM

Cameras provided, I will see what these are, likely a digital disposable like these. Could be 35mm disposable as only winning fish will be developed and awards are following day.

http://www.ideastage.com/Disposable-...FQtpfgod7lcAtg

Quote:

8. Cameras – In order to maintain tournament integrity each participant will be given an Official Tournament Camera. Upon kayak launch on dry ground, a photograph must be taken with the participant and kayak in the same photo. At the end of fishing a picture with the participant, the kayak and the fish to be weighted in the picture at the kayak launch (on land) before putting the kayak or gear away.
Upon weighing in, the Official Tournament Camera must be returned at the tournament weigh-in location.
Participants will be subject to disqualification if the camera rules are not followed correctly.
Cameras containing winning fish will be developed before payouts are given. No payouts will be given until the BD Outdoors Yellowtail Shootout Committee has picture verification and/or a polygraph test is completed.
9. Tie-Breaker Rule – If there are two or more individual fish having identical weights, the first fish brought to the dock and weighed will be awarded the higher place should both fish be in top prize spots. The Dana Landing weigh station will be equipped with a digital clock to record the time on the weigh slip.
10. Weight determination – Fish weight will be calculated by the single heaviest fish per kayak participant. A maximum of 3 yellowtail per person can be weighed to determine heaviest fish in bag. A single limit of white sea bass can be weighed separate of the 3 yellowtail.

Take your yak out to Mission or SD Bay and get used to the feeling of it.. Take no or as little as possible gear so you can practice entry and re-entry (it's that time of year, water and air temps are decent enough you may enjoy the dip).. Yes, literally flop or jump out of your kayak in water and see what it takes you to get back in, therefore if it happens in open water, you are prepared.. After a day or 2 of farting around on a new kayak, most are comfortable with how they perform then from there the world is your oyster my man.. Most probably will not take you up on your offer to fish this sunday but don't let that deter you... Get out there, get you and your kayak wet and soon enough you will be pulling up fish on her... Time on the water is key my man, safety first then fun from there..
:cheers1:

I think this has the potential to be tons of fun.

Andy's pretty much got all the answers handled.

The cameras are throwaway 35mm. For the kayak division take a photo on the beach before you launch. Sets the time and place. Then stick it in the plastic zipock and stow away until you get back to the beach with your catch. Then snap a pic of your catch before you haul all your gear back to the truck/car.

The cameras then are developed after the weekend and before any checks are written to confirm the rules were followed. We know you guys are a tight knit group and will probably be fishing next to each other watching each other like hawks so taking a pic of every fish as it's caught with a crappy non waterproof camera isn't necessary. You are more than welcome to take pics with your own cameras or ours while on the water, it's just not required.

The yellowtail tournament has a huge raffle with only anglers showing up getting 1 ticket. If you don't show, no raffle ticket... Makes the odds way better. Majority of the raffle prizes are for all anglers kayak and boat. There is kayak specific raffle prizes as well from what I'm told.
Check out the raffle prizes as they come in.

A HUGE stack of Yeti coolers just came in for give away, couple Traeger grills, Reels from all the manufacturers, rods, sunglasses, etc.

On Sunday we have a local chef representing Traeger Grills cooking up bbq on the Traeger grills as well as sides, dessert and beer being served by the CCA (have to do it this way to be legal).

Each angler also gets an anglers bag worth easily over $100. Hooks, JRI jigs, line, hats, shirts, drinks, all sorts of stuff again this year.

Too bad some of us will be down south in San Quintin, hunting butt, seems very fun though! Hopefully if all goes well we can get another one going later in the season when the bite is really on and more local for the kayakers.. I'd mark my calendar for sure! Cheers to supporting the community!! :cheers1::cheers1:

Iceman 06-12-2017 02:17 PM

1st place winner is going to get $800 and a $1399 kayak, the newly designed Malibu Kayaks Stealth 12. That is a $2199 payout for a kayak division.............nothing to sneeze at!

Am I required to attend the captains meeting? All vacation time is used up so I would make it to camp at night on Friday.

What is the last day to sign up?

Iceman 06-17-2017 06:09 AM

Beto, the Captains meeting is required as you would get the camera that is required along with instructions to adhere to the tournament rules and guidelines.

Fishing619 06-18-2017 03:29 PM

Partner up

:reel::reel:
I have sing up for the tournament just wandering if any one want to partner up we can meet saturday morning and take off together, let me know thanks.

GTboosted 06-18-2017 09:03 PM

oh man!
Andy thanks for doing this and promoting our sport. Hopefully there is a next year so that I can plan to take time off for the captains meeting.

Iceman 06-19-2017 12:07 PM

Regrettably the kayak division will not be happening this year due to low number of entries. The folks at BD Outdoors and I agreed that this was for the best. Those entered should have received an e mail and will be refunded entry fee.
