Headed out for some rockfishing; a first in La Jolla for me. I'm a bit old school (i.e. - cheap) so no electronics, and naive apparently as I figured I'd punch my way out to deep water and drift in limiting out along the way . Using cut squid I caught a number of tiny to small whitefish but nothing worth keeping. Was visited by a group of grey whales which made the trip special but no bueno on my fishing.

No lobster pots to mark any rock piles along the way? Thanks for the report :cheers1:

Idiot me, really. I have heard that advice before and even got it again from a couple dudes on the beach when I launched. I saw pots, thought about it and kept paddling with the mindset the deeper the better. Not the case!

Yea without a fish finder it can be difficult to find fish drifting around in deep water. I haven’t had a finder for awhile now. The lobster pots really help as well as just fishing the kelp line. When the kelp is dense enough I like to grab a handful and put it under my leg to anchor myself down while I fish for bass or rockfish.

Good to hear your report. Always test the ff the night before, and if it is not working, I don't go.
