What brand and # of Spectra??

What brand of spectra do some of ya'll use. Power Pro is what I use here in the Gulf of Mexico.. What pound test spectra do ya'll use ? I know it kind of depends on the amount of drag your reel can handle but I just wanted to know what most of you use..Just trying to get a feel for how you guys/gals do it in Cali.. Thanks in advance..

I believe spectra is the brand. Most go no smaller than 40#. But here you have to contend with yellowtail breaking you off in the kelp, so you need the strong stuff to turn em away from junk.

Thanks for the reply..

65# minimum 100# max

Small topshot in the kelp, longer one anywhere else.

brands: P-line spectrex, Izorline, Power-Pro

fifty power pro (green). Cuts through the kelp when it had strong stringers.., kelp's dying so snags are easily released.

Spectra?

I've heard Spectra can actually cut a hole in your yak! Anyone have any info/experience with this? Thanks, Piranha

We use 30lb spectra. Seems to hold up well.

i like powerpro highvis yellow, most popular # on my reels are 50 and 60. Calcutta also makes a nice spectra. Havent fished with it, but it feels very soft and is 4 strands.

hogginhank 05-13-2006 10:06 PM

Thanks for the info. I have 65# power pro with a 2' top shot of 60# flouro for the kelp and a 5' flouro topshot for everything out of the kelp.. Thanks again..

I usually use power pro 30 or 40. Ive heard great things about daiwas braided line...pricey but excellent stuff.

I have a big spool of PP 35 I bought off ebay. Last time I was having it put on a reel it kept breaing under tension. Better then than on a fish.

Not like I get anything that justifies 35# recently :(

On job site we use nylon cord 1/16th" to cut 3" and 4" PVC and ABS pipe with ease, cuts like butter.

...so hell yeah that stuff will saw thru your hull in a blink of an eye,

or nice run of a fish. thats why no stubby rods for the yak for me. be smart out there :reeling:
Heavy mono will even cut quickly. and Nylon rope for hoopin' will leave a mark on your hull if your not careful

Friction is the enemy...

Has anybody tried red spectra? I've heard its the least visible

dorado50 12-10-2010 12:43 PM

dumped the powerpro a few years back. went with jerry brown spectra, quality stuff........red color ok for deep water stuff... anything above 20 -30 feet good luck.

Jimmyz123 12-10-2010 01:49 PM

I bought into the belief that Red Lines are not visible but when using it I saw a HUGE reduction in my bite ratios. Like someone else also stated from 0 to 60 feet the line is still visible. I switched back to green colored lines on all Freshwater and Saltwater reels and the bite ratio when back up to where it use to be. There are some that will swear by the red color lines, but I learned not to like it.

Izorline 65lb Green

Stuff is bullet proof. Much easier to untangle backlashes with it than the 50lb power pro i used to use.

I'm using JB spectra as well. Its not waxed, so it flows off the spool smoother and doesn't tend to (catch and stop the spool as you're feeding line out.

Still use green.
