Calicos on the chew
 

Being a brand new member of the kayak fishing community, I have been surprised at how few people like to fish the kelp for the checkerboards. After a few trips out to La Lolla all I can say is that the fishing in the kelp is excellent right now. Lots of big calicos if the current is going at all. Today I had three five pound plus calicos in about an hour span between 11:03 and 12:30. And the fishing is supposed to get get good soon? Kayaks rule!

Fishing is all fishing. I am happy walking the banks of a lake or in a float tube. Trout, bass surfperch....tuna. I remember in one of my first years fishing saltwater. I had a 16 foot Sea Nymph. Fishing the Pt Loma Kelp with a friend, who was a much better fisherman. We had calicos on every cast with 4-5 followers trying to grab the plastic out of the fishes mouth. He could not believe that after a 1/2 hour, I was ready to head outside to look for YT.

Part of it for me is that I feel justified in the amount of time that I spend fishing because of the fish that I bring home to enjoy with my family.
Some of us would rather roll the dice, getting skunked, over and over, looking for the big keeper. While some find the same satisfaction in getting the upper hand on the calico bass.

I really enjoy the variety of fishing reports. Thanks for sharing. 5+ pound calicos sounds like a blast. You should consider joining the WCB on www.sdkayakfishing.com Once I have given those slackers a decent headstart, I am gonna sign up. :D

I admit, I really like fishing for bass, it is steady excitement, and at times, harder than you think. But once you get that big WSB, or any YT for that matter, it is like hitting a homerun!! For me, I want that feeling of a fish burning #50 spectra like nothing, over and over, and will go 20 times por nada to LJ in a row to find it! Then stop by the kelp on the way in for a couple checker boards...fishing is all good! :D

Anytime I find myself thinking about fishing for bass I just stir my martini until the thought passes. 8)

Calico's
 

I bought my yak just to fish the calicos---
I do like to branch out from time to time and chasing the big fish is hard to resist for long when you know they are there.
I also feel that fishing for bass is a great way to acclimate to the ocean
and catching fish from the kayak in general. I am always ready for the bass and the bigger fish every time I go out. I have caught yellowtail and whitesea bass inside the kelp-so be ready---
It's all good---save some for me!
I have had a number of 20+ fish days in the kelp all alone and released them all-
And Calico's are tasty fried or they make great civiche'.
Don't listen to the madsanddabkillerdude-he targets smaller fish plent of times just to keep food on the table :D

You better believe it!

But I always have a flylined bait or two out while dicking around with the bottom critters. My biggest YT was caught while pounding the dab.

I can see fishing the kelp for checkers when its slow (sort of), but I seriously can't understand fishing predomiantly in the bay when there is one of the premier offshore kayak fisheries just up the block. Not that anyone on this board does that.

Fishing is all good. But one of the side benefits of primarily fishing for the big boys is getting to tweak the bass guys. They get so riled up, it's kind of cute. :wink:

It's moreso that nobody reports on the bass much. They are kinda a "given" for a number of people who "care to waste their time" (like me for example - WCW points - 0!).

After pounding a local lake all day for a couple one pound Largemouth, or a limit of trout, it IS amazing to glide solo into the thick kelp that evening to catch a couple dozen 2-5 pound calicos in a hot evening bite.

Wait till the water hits 64, you can catch them on donuts.

Welcome to life up here in Malibu....no yellowtail for years!

PS I think I spead for just about everyone when I say that the BWE logo up there with the twin calicos should be updated with twin yellows!
