Question about the MPA in La Jolla.

I don't have a GPS on my Yak, and would like a visual reference to know when I am far enough out to fish. Also, I've seen some posts saying guys troll a sabiki with a heavy flasher for a weight, to make bait. Am I allowed to troll a sabiki thru the MPA? Does having the flasher with a bigger hook on the end change anything legally, as far as fishing in the MPA? Is this a non-concern for yak based fished?

I’m pretty sure the flag pole should align with the front right edge of that tall creme colored building. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

If you carry a phone, get the app called FishAlerts!

It maps the MPA's precisely and you can see exactly where you are in relation to the boundaries.
Also has an excellent current summary of regulations per fish.

My understanding is that it's legal to catch bait with hooks in the protected zone around Scripps Pier but not the protected area in La Jolla Cove:

https://www.wildlife.ca.gov/Conserva...servation-area
https://www.wildlife.ca.gov/Conserva...marine-reserve

(note: "during daylight hours" for launching through the Matlahuayl MPA. I have not noticed that restriction before. Is that new?

Depends upon how dark it is.

Line the flag pole up with.....

The second palm frond hut and stay west of that I would not put a bait pole out any closer. You might have a game warden handing you a ticket on the beach. Could be in the thousands of $ For MLPA violation. Not worth it they could even make a blow up video of you if they wanted.

Flag Pole and Palm Tree

or wait till lobster season begins and see a clear line, which BTW is the flag pole and palm tree.

MITCHELL 03-29-2018 02:23 PM

The palm tree...

Must be right next to the hut cause I checked it with my GPS MLPA boundaries closure on my graph.

Flag pole and the palm tree are a very good mark if you are in the area from the canyon and South. The 2 points do not lie in exactly the same latitude, so the further you are away from them, the more West that line will push you. But without any other means of determining your position, they are a good start.

In the main LJ Reserve, as with all of the MLPA reserves you cannot take anything including bait. The area from the pier going North is a "Conservation Area", not a Reserve. Each conservation area has its own restrictions. For example: in that conservation area, you may catch pelagic finfish bait, but you cannot catch market Squid.

FishAlerts can’t be found on my iPhone anymore. If anyone got a link, please share

It looks like something is wrong with FishAlerts. Their website seems to be shut down and the links from their FB page are broken. Too bad.

The app on my iphone pulls up the map, but the MPA overlay is missing. The fish regulations are still there. The weather links are shut down.

I hope it's only temporary. That was a good app. I sent an email to the guy who authored that app. His FishAlerts.com website is down, but my email has not been rejected/returned yet. His name is Harry Carpenter. His company is Great Outdoors Mobile, Inc., in Costa Mesa.

I still have the app and it works

MITCHELL 03-30-2018 06:25 AM

How much do you think a MLPA violation would be...

at la Jolla. Your a sitting duck, view from land.
If a fresh water fishing with 3 poles violation was $1,150.00

dpricenator 03-30-2018 06:36 AM

Thank you guys very much. Last couple times I just went out to where some other guys were, and figured if I get a ticket, so will they. I'll feel better about it, this next time around.

FishAlerts is a dead app now unfortunately - found that out on Saturday when I wanted to see the boundary off the tip of point loma.

This is the edge of the MPA - line up the flag pole with the edge of the building.

Is anyone else noticing the smell of lawyers somewhere around here? It's kind of like the plug of the drain has been pulled, and fumes from the sewer are drifting up.

Nah, ... it's probably just me. I feel the need to go take a shower.

I liked FishAlerts for regulations lookup as well (though I've found it to be incomplete e.g. local Sculpin closure wasn't quite right).

I haven't been able to find anything good for quick reg lookup (since going through the DFW PDF is tricky, and even getting to the actual link to the file takes some web surfiing). If anyone finds a good alternative, please let me know.

If we were talking about firearms rather than kayak fishing, Legal Heat is an app that fills that purpose nicely. "50 State guide to Firearm Law" by National Training Solutions, Inc.

I apologize for going off topic a little with this, but some of you might like the information.

Right on! :you_rock: Between the photo and a little help from google earth I was able to locate the Flag, palm tree, etc. Now, to talk the wife into letting me go tomorrow.

alanw 03-30-2018 03:22 PM

I also google mapped it and it looks like the flag pole/building sight line is off by up to a couple hundred feet if you are closer than about 1/3 mile from the point. It's pretty close though.

I won’t be out there tomorrow, but I’ve heard of different groups planning to head out tomorrow if you’re looking for some on the water guidance. I think some forum members will be there for sure.
