Quick trip to La Jolla yesterday am- launched at first light. Bait was tough to get- got one Spanish so I fly-lined it immediately and searched for more. I always use a heavy sibiki with a megabait for a weight...good thing. Saw a mark at the bottom in 60 ft of water-- Surprised by this 19lb halibut just off of the kelp.

To work by 8:30 - great morning! Pictures are dark but the fish was fat

GTboosted 08-08-2018 03:31 PM

Congrats. That's a fatty for sure

BigTunaL 08-08-2018 03:53 PM

Congrats ... are you saying you caught it on the megabait? awsome

pistol 08-08-2018 04:01 PM

Yes, at the bottom of my sabiki. Got another one a little smaller in 125 ft of water two weeks ago on a hookup bait...

That's awesome and is why I use a metal spoon (crock) style lure for a weight on my sibiki too. One can never know and only hope.

Congrats on a very efficient outing.

and score. very nice!

The Bubba blade put the size in perspective. Thats a nice fish!

Were the sabiki hooks wrapped around the fish when you got him to the yak?

I hate getting pricked by those little hooks when fish are flopping around.

FISH11 08-08-2018 08:31 PM

Congrats. Nice Hali on your short but very productive trip to LJ.

Apex Predator 08-08-2018 10:12 PM

Nice, I put a jelly squid over my weight and dangle an assist hook from it. Were you using a sabiki rod also, or a traditional rod?

Tigermidge 08-09-2018 06:33 AM

A barn door?
Grin.

Woot!

Do you use your sibiki on a lightweight bait pole or a full size La Jolla rig?

PS - I like your knife. Next time I have $54 to burn, I want to get one! Alas, too many other bills on my desk need tending to first

Ggiannig89 08-09-2018 10:36 AM

Nice fish right there!! I do like the bubba blade but I’m not a fan of using a rigid blade for filleting my halibut.

Bubba Blade is 15". Caught it on my favorite Graf Tech 10-20 lb rod with and old Calcutta 400s- classic set up.
